It will likely peak over 100k within the next two days, but the sales on the PS5 seem really low.

There's no physical Standard Edition.

On Steam is at number one two, globally.
So that probably means PC is the platform where the game is selling the most, by far.
This really doesn't bode well for the game.

We put too much stock in Steam CCUs in my opinion.
This 1000%

I have zero horses in this race (but plan to buy Marathon on weekend) but people making it look like folks are not buying/playing the game on consoles.

I think that in the end Marathon won't become the mega-hit, but won't flop either, it will find it's dedicated moderately respectrable audience.

Which isnt good for a billion dollar studio

This is a strawman argument, Marathon was always the side-project for Bungie and the billion dollar part is busy with Destiny 3.

I think a lot of people overestimate the importance of Marathon in grand scheme of things, especially since it's a paid release.

But I'm not ready for this conversation and tired of it already.

Also not too invested in Marathon as well either way. Hell if it had a solo campaign, I might even downloaded it myself because apparently the gameplay is good.

With that said do you think Marathon will survive long-term? I'm talking at least 5 years, bare minimum with a lot of big updates/DLC, etc and support? If you don't think it'll last at least as long as Destiny 1 for example, how long do you think Sony will keep the power running for the game?

I think it will, especially on consoles. Knowing Bungie they will tweak things based on the player's feedback. Plus at leas they have a solid plan for the future and solic core gameplay, mess of a game Tarkov survived for god knowh how long because of it's dedicated audience and probably will outlive way more hyped games.

Sony watching the new game from the studio they paid 1.3 billion dollars for that was in development for like five years and cost 350 million dollars that needs to sell 5 million copies to break even have 80,000 players on Steam on launch day

Huh, I expected it would go to 150K. Maybe it will at least crawl to 100K on sunday.

Anyway, it is a flop. Not Concord level flop, but flop nonetheless.

If you want my money Bungie, make something singleplayer and storydriven.

No, not when it's a GaaS game that requires Network resources, human resources for constant fixes, balancing and additional content.
You know what a side project would be? A single player shooter in the Destiny universe with the same budget and the same price.

Bungie has top notch gun play, controls and general gameplay, which is wasted in GaaS and online games in my opinion.
I could see them making a Killzone sequel.

It's simply a very odd commercial choice for Bungie.

A super sweaty extraction shooter. It's their dungeon philosophy in Destiny writ large.

A pity, as they have the ability to design a much more welcoming version of the genre.

Insane coping in this thread. if this was a markquee gaas release by Microsoft made by Blizzard it would be slaughtered in here, its down to 32k now. Its a failure just not on par with concord. I dont see why most of you single player fanatics arent happy, it will reinforce to sony that maybe gaas is not worth going all in on

There was a real opportunity here for Bungie to try and cultivate a passionate fan base. They should have binned off anti-cheat and promoted this thing heavily for Steam Deck, and I'd even go as far as to say Switch 2. Release simultaneously on all platforms with full cross progression etc.

Very few games in the genre have come close to the numbers that PUBG did. Many have tried to achieve the same level of success but the thing is PUBG grew by word of mouth, and friends bringing friends into the game unti it spiralled into the crazy success that it was/is. Developers want to get to that point, but you cant just recreate a thing like PUBG on demand. It just happened, and there is no point trying to copy that. But I guess the allure of a record profit from a relatively small investment is too hard to pass up now. Its a kind of gambling going on - who is going to make the next PUBG kind of success GAAS? I dont think anyone is going to achieve that. PUBG had > 1 million players daily for years, peaked at over 3 million conurrent players and still have 600-700 thousand players online every day.

Let's use a different game then that launched together. Would people consider Forza Horizon 5 a flop? That has an all time CCU peak of 81K, lower than Marathon.
We know that live service games need a strong start and a strong road map from launch.

It would buck all trends for the average CCU to go up over time. If it's started at 80k the logic says it will only decline from here.

Live service games are supposed to provide a consistent source of revenue, and that will be higher with a higher user base.

That is the metric that Marathon will be judged on by Sony, Bungie and the public.

Forza Horizon 5 is none of the above, it's primarily a single player game that people can jump in to day one or day 500 and the experience will be the same.

I'm ecstatic ngl. I would support games like Marathon if Sony didn't lose the fucking plot around their tentpole studios in the process of this delusional path.

But nah, fuck em. If the even the good GaaS suffer so those retards learn their lesson so be it.

^ All of the Marathon team will feel his pain today.

A stunning miscalculation on Bungies part and it's their own fault.

Destiny 2 numbers are in the toilet too. Really bad for Bungie the "GAAS specialists" right now.

Be some very terse phone calls between Bungie & Sony today. Wouldn't be surprised if Hulst is summoned by Nishino. Or if Sony Japan summons them both.

Billions down the drain on acquisitions with nothing to show for it. Back to back flops on live service games from dev studios they have bought. Fairgame$ MIA. Be a lot of unhappy people at Sony right now.

Eitherway. They've hanged themselves now. I think there is a chance Bungie as a studio will survive this initially. But the rest of their independence is gone.

I'll wait and see what the weekend numbers look like, but it isn't a super great time for Bungie right now.

As I said in the Highguard thread a few times, look for heavier hitters like ARC, Overwatch(who resurged quite a bit), etc to put out content that'll snatch people away.

These numbers are not good.

It's not pulling the Destiny crowd.

It was never going to, considering it's apparently unfriendly to casual players which arguably make up a lot of Destiny.

It's also PvPvE when majority of Destiny is PvE. Kind of like how Division 2 has a very large community for a game as old as it is, but only a very small percentage of it dabbles in the PvP side like Dark Zone.

My suspicion is that within 6 to 12 months we will see a pve only mode introduced.

Why would it? The Destiny player base is in the toilet because of how badly Bungie manage Destiny.

They release a new expansion or season. It's dog shit. They spend a full year getting it back to a good place. Then by the end of that year or season it's shit again and the cycle repeats.

They have just delayed D2 "season" for Marathon all the way into June. Despite the community sentiment around everything post TFS being negative. Can barely hit 10k players on steam anymore.

Nevermind the egregious pricing for the Everest store.

The beautiful irony considering how Killzone was supposed to be the PS3 'Halo Killer' lol.

No one is "rooting" for them to fail. Some people just like when their predictions come true. Everyone here would love to buy a great Bungie game.

Did you just make this up?

Think it will have a hardcore base of 20k-50k for a year or two.
I don't think Sony would keep the servers on for 20k. It must have one of the more expensive overheads of any GaaS considering how bloated Bungie is.

Agree completely, but that's why it's a concern.

At the very least you would want 'legacy' fans to give your new game a go....

It will be shutdown long before that if these are the numbers 🤣
nah, 20-50k would be very sustainable, just with a much smaller team. Might even make back its development cost at some point if it could cling to that kind of moderate engagement. They`d need to have another project for the remaining staff ofc. or..well you know, axe them.

Bluepoint sends their regards. A studio killed because Sony will have to make up for three huge GAAS flops this year. Fuck you!

Don't worry. They will pick another studio to cover up expanses, maybe Bend Studio.
Meanwhile we have clowns here using low effort sob tatics as if they care about this or trying false equivalence with the bad reception of this game as if people hate Bungie.

Oh no it's cratering like the server test last week, how terrible.

Conversely I am surprised by some people's level of surprise in here at how many are rooting for the game's failure, like Sony didn't just close one of their best single player studios less than two weeks ago.

I for one will grab the popcorn and watch their pathetic multiplayer gaas strategy fail.
