Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

lol imagine panic-buying Bungie during the pandemic gaming bubble, then seeing this shit:

Sounds more like an adult daycare than a business. I suspect more layoffs and restructuring are coming soon, if they even survive.

Was there a massive shift in personnel from the HALO days? How did Bungie go from Master Chief to that? Were they always like that and then times changed and under Sony they had free reign to push their agendas? Or was there a transition (no pun intended) over time from the HALO days to now under Sony and post-Destiny?

So will Bungie survive this?
They have a total of 85k people playing Destiny 2 and Marathon COMBINED right now.

I don't see how they survive this, at least in any meaningful capacity like they are now. There's no more updates to Destiny 2 until June and I very much doubt the "update in a couple weeks" for Marathon will move the needle at all.

They can't catch a break, the negativity will continue. The fake positivity will vanish after the next 2-3 week... Just pure raw facts and hard truths

I've seen a lot of Marathon fans who love the mandatory reset. Personally, I much prefer Arc Raiders voluntary reset mechanic. Seems much more player friendly to me.

What fake positivity? It's very positive on steam with 11k reviews. People that play it like it. It's not for everyone like every other game but it's not like it's being propped up by reviewers or a few fanboys.

85k daily peak CCU's on Steam would most likely generate over 1000mil per year for GAAS games. Even something like Destiny 2 still generates a ton of money with 20k Steam peaks

Bungie should be fine. If Marathon shut down tmmrw, they would probably be some layoffs, but the vast majority would just start work on Destiny 3

The concern isn't Bungie shutting down. The problem is they are not worth 3.6bil that Sony spent. That money is already gone, though

We know this is not true.

I dont think the current Bungie can undertake something as massive as Destiny 3

That's some crazy math if you think players are going to spend that much on cosmetics shit.

Missing revenue projections doesn't mean the studio isn't profitable. Layoffs doesn't correlate to profitability. As an example, tech companies are making more money than ever, but most of them have had massive layoffs in recent years

You can not like Marathon, but the game has S tier gun play, animations, cinematics ect.. Bungie's best expansion, The Final Shape, was released in 2024. Unless you think Bungie changed in 1.5 years?

Before you guys start making fun of the game for today please educate yourselves and remember it's national play outside day

I actually think it would be a great idea to have one day a month where there's no electricity or internet to force people to go outside and see people 🤣

Destiny 2 is basically cooked, and Marathon is not performing. Layoffs are expected regardless. I don't know if Sony will have the patience to wait 6+ years for Bungie to make Destiny 3 at this point. (especially when the key talent that made Bungie, Bungie, is not there anymore) 🤷‍♂️

Game just came out. 88k is good for a game y that peaked at 250k plus players, that's not what is happening here

Sony already took an impairment charge on one of their recent financial releases, which basically says they re-evaluated how much Bungie is worth and took the difference (which was a loss) out of their balance sheet already.

Fully agree on the rest though.

There could be downsizing, but to say they probably going to shut down is wishful thinking of you. Bungie is still one of biggest brands in gaming. Zero chance they get shut down

:pie_thinking:..Now that I think about it, closing Bungie would be a cowardly move from Sony. A better and more based move would be for Sony to get rid of all those woke people infecting the industry....
Oh Yes GIF

...and Bungie being one of the wokest of them all. It really doesn't matter what the actual outcome is. These people can't make games without injecting their weird ideology = fired or Bungie is not in a salvageable state = gets closed for good.

its a win-win scenario

Welp europeak for saturday ended at 75133, now its going down while us eurobros going offline currently at 73921 :messenger_astonished:
Now gotta wait 4 more hours for US peak^^.

The game is really hard but really great at times especially if you are playing with a good team

People should chill about Steam CCU because it would be 1 higher if I was playing on PC

Leave the people enjoying the game to their own devices. Hell I created the BO7 OT so I appreciate that those threads are available as an escape from the viral internet pile-on.

Conversely there's also nothing wrong with us chortling in here enjoying the schadenfreude of another Sony live service flop, especially after they canned Bluepoint two weeks ago.

"Some people just wanna see the world burn" vibes from this thread
Every succesfull modern audience gaas means potential less single player games targetted towards core audience(males) so ofc being selfish af i wish them all burn to the ground, and if not all then at the very least all founded by big publishers, that money competes with high quality singleplayer games that arent fundend, we had recent example with closed bluepoint studios.

As a lifelong sports gaming fan and cod fan, im used to getting shit, so I dont feel bad for em lol.

Based on current trending and this game skewing to USA EST, it's at 73k now but should pop up to about 80k by later tonight.

So it should be about the same as yesterday which topped out at 79k. Very unlikely it'll hit launch day 88k.

Yeah like Tom in janitorial and Su in craft services.

They are fantastic people and brought a lot to the original Halo trilogy.

Their contributions carry on.

A bit of an aside as he likely had very little to zero influence on Halo 3, I had to look it up. Luke Smith of 1Up fame is still at Bungie.

What's your favorite genre?

So many man hard to pinpoint, most pvp that isn't br or extraction, rpgs, arpgs, crpgs, action, 2d side scroller Metroidvania types, immersive sims, my recent platinums are the likes of black myth wukong, hell is us, , terminator 2D no fate, expedition E33, marvel rivals, Alan Wake 2, Control, Diablo 4, space marine 2, bloodborne, elden ring, so many more... Working on platinums for nioh 3, DQ 7, avowed... Crimson desert will be mixed in.

Pvp is by far my main tho as I have pumped thousands upon thousands of hours into battlefields, cods, destiny 1 and 2, doom, many more.

BR and Extraction just don't land for me. The division extraction was more my speed because your gear had value in the pve realm.. It wasn't JUST the dark zone so I don't mind extraction like that.
