NVIDIA RTX Mega Geometry is coming to The Witcher 4

We can confirm that The Witcher IV will feature NVIDIA RTX Mega Geometry, adding one of NVIDIA's newer ray tracing technologies to CD PROJEKT RED's next Witcher game. NVIDIA previously said it had been working with CD PROJEKT RED since the beginning of development, and that the game would launch with the latest RTX-powered technologies. This new detail gives that statement a specific feature name.

RTX Mega Geometry is designed for ray-traced scenes with much heavier geometric detail than traditional pipelines handle well. NVIDIA says the technology accelerates BVH building for cluster-based geometry systems, allowing far more ray-traced triangles and better performance in heavy ray tracing workloads. In simple terms, it is meant to help ray tracing scale better with dense environments, complex meshes, and high-detail assets, much like we remember the open-world Witcher series for.

This game is going to be gorgeous. Cannot wait!

Edit: Those trees better be swaying like they're in the middle of a hurricane, though.

Ok .. but when is The Witcher 4 coming?
Oh who cares about that, it will have path tracing man, path t r a c i n g!
But I'm not kidding, it's probably going to look sick on PC(only), and guessing 2028-9.

On the other hand this RTX Geo tech seems like such luxury in a way. Like who cares about individual needles on a pine tree while galloping on a horse through a forest?

So the gulf between console and high end PC will only be bigger AMD as to do something and fast

AMD has a lot of tech in the work but holy shit it takes time. It always feels like when they see Nvidia do something they're like "UUHHHH? You can do that?" and they're off to start a solution from scratch.

Shockingly, this one seems to be open source, a rare thing from Nvidia side.

AMD don't even have a single path tracing game sponsorship so far. Next gen consoles need AMD to shift gear or if they miss out on some hardware feature to accelerate like PC does, it might mean it'll be an RT machine but not a strong PT one..

Path tracing with mega geometry and Nanite, Metahuman NPCs, Witcher universe open world and all done with a giant budget

I'll eat several hats if that game doesn't instantly become a graphics benchmark upon release.

So for their first time working with Unreal Engine they've decided to make the most technically ambitious Unreal 5 game of all time. Sounds like a tall order for a brand new studio's first release. RED was more than just the graphics. It was the questing system, animations the whole thing. They're starting from absolute scratch with brand new Witcher leadership. Spooky times for sure.
