Note: this is assuming that the system override will work the same as it does on PC with something like DLSS override. If there are differences, hopefully Sony will share that in the future.
So the PSSR 2.0 Firmware update is out now and for many folks (including myself) the initial impressions are overwhelming positive! Free system update dramatically improving many games for free and zero effort for the user. However, I think it's worth emphasizing a point about this update that seems to be flying under the radar for some.
By enabling a system wide toggle for "enhanced PSSR quality" it means that ANY and ALL future updates to the PSSR model/algorithm can now be provided to PS5 PRO gamers fast, easy, and WITHOUT dedicated patches from devs. So all of these games will continually improve over time as the machine learning model gets more advanced. For example imagine playing your GT7 or Crimson Desert in 6 months and noticing that it looks and runs even better than it does today. May require a system update to update drivers and such but pretty much zero effort for the user. Just leave the toggle On and it should sync to the latest and greatest model that Sony has. If you think these games look much better today, wait to see how it improves even further over the next year or so.
It was said at one point from "insiders" that the new PSSR would require complete reimplementation from devs to use new APIs and such which would have required more work from devs and dedicated patches (meaning slower and more limited support). So glad that turned out to not be the case and Sony was able to deploy this at the system level for seamless updates. THAT is the power of machine learning and pretty much unprecedented in the console space. Absolute Masterstroke from them on increasing the value of the PRO over time!!
