PSSR 2.0 System Wide Toggle Is a Masterstroke For Pro Owners

Note: this is assuming that the system override will work the same as it does on PC with something like DLSS override. If there are differences, hopefully Sony will share that in the future.

So the PSSR 2.0 Firmware update is out now and for many folks (including myself) the initial impressions are overwhelming positive! Free system update dramatically improving many games for free and zero effort for the user. However, I think it's worth emphasizing a point about this update that seems to be flying under the radar for some.

By enabling a system wide toggle for "enhanced PSSR quality" it means that ANY and ALL future updates to the PSSR model/algorithm can now be provided to PS5 PRO gamers fast, easy, and WITHOUT dedicated patches from devs. So all of these games will continually improve over time as the machine learning model gets more advanced. For example imagine playing your GT7 or Crimson Desert in 6 months and noticing that it looks and runs even better than it does today. May require a system update to update drivers and such but pretty much zero effort for the user. Just leave the toggle On and it should sync to the latest and greatest model that Sony has. If you think these games look much better today, wait to see how it improves even further over the next year or so.

It was said at one point from "insiders" that the new PSSR would require complete reimplementation from devs to use new APIs and such which would have required more work from devs and dedicated patches (meaning slower and more limited support). So glad that turned out to not be the case and Sony was able to deploy this at the system level for seamless updates. THAT is the power of machine learning and pretty much unprecedented in the console space. Absolute Masterstroke from them on increasing the value of the PRO over time!!

Yep, what a great move by Sony. Stuff like this is historically a PC-centric feature, so it's great to see them bringing something like this to their console.

I've been testing out games even crappy ones such as immortals of Avalon, The image quality was trash now it looks so much better that UE5 fizzle is still around but reduced, when you use Frame gen in it actually feels so much better.Using 120hz VRR

GT7 looks so dang good, the ray tracing is stable, really a great update. The toggle update so far has impressed me, every game that I've tried I've seen some improvement in it. And unreal engine 5 game certainly do look more stable.

Anyone seen a Silent Hill 2 comparison anywhere? I've been looking but can't find one.

I would test it myself but I've never played the original so when I play it I just want to enjoy it, not be looking for problems.

I think someone said in one of the other PSSR threads that this is one of the ones that is better but still not perfect.

Even on the PC, some games were locked to certain DLSS/FSR versions and needed mods to run the new versions.

Hopefully going forward this changes as well.

This kind of system wide stuff should be standard, really.
But yeah, they did a great job.

Avatar difference with FSR3, and previous PSSR, literally blew me away.

Issues are gone, but still only at 30fps because we have to wait for Bloober to patch PSSR back in Performance Mode. Ironic.

I've only tested alan wake 2 and performance mode is wayyy better i initially opted for the 40 fps mode on pssr 1 but I would still disable motion blur it still looks a bit messy when enabled

Just to be clear are you saying there is a 'toggle' in the settings section of the PS5 pro that we have to activate ourselves, or is it just an update and the user has to do nothing?

Once you update the firmware you have to physically toggle it to on. It does not default to the On position.

GT7, Yotei and KCD2 look even better now, this toggle is a masterstroke indeed. No need to wait for a studio to release an update if the game is already using PSSR.
This is the way.

I don't think they would have mentioned SH2 in the blog post if it wasn't on their radar anymore. There is hope!
Eh, wish I could share your optimism. Would be nice if someone could contact Bloober directly.

Not sure if you're actually dumb or being willfully obtuse, but DLSS 5 is not "impressive illumination".
No space for doubt of confusion in the presence of those takes. Dude has no brain.

Great news for console players, it's great to see these upscaling getting better and better.

You're comparing apples to oranges here. Upscaling is a different animal entirely from something that completely changes the look of a game.
You understand that DLSS 5 is the natural evolution and Sony is just a few years behind Nvidia, right?
A solution like DLSS 5 is coming sooner or later to consoles. Maybe not the PS6 as I think it's a bit earlier, but definitively for the PS7.

This is how it should've been launched.

Current it does look cool but too bad PS6 is closer.

Make sense to get that directly. Or next gen Series S.

We all understand that but at the moment it still very much has the look of being ai generated. It's just not a good look. I'm sure it will get better and eventually our choices will be don't play modern games or just accept this evolution of the tech. It is what it is.
