Trouble in Digital Foundry land - Big Johnny boy not happy over DLSS 5 video

To be fair, I always like the content John discuss. His retro DF videos are always great for the most part, and the type of content you don't generally get from the other members of DF at all. He is not just the average tech enthusiast. It's clear he appreciate games for what they stand for and the worlds its creator can bring to life, even with limited tech.

I've come to realize that nearly everything said on Twitter or Bluesky isn't worth paying attention too.

A literal toxic waste dump of discourse. They love to whip up mobs against things they dislike, so it's not surprising that John is throwing his colleagues under the bus to conform with the mob.

Look, it's totally fine to not like DLSS5, but I'm pretty sure most people at Bsky spend more time criticizing games than playing them. And some of the most critical people there, so-called "influential game artists," only have indie slop that two people bought on their resume. Insufferable.

K, I fail to see why they can't settle this internally.
Maybe they could. John being vocal about this is actually the smartest play. It's a controversial tech and going whole hog on it damages the DF brand. This may be intentional damage control and even if it's not, it may end up giving them room to backpedal after seeing the reaction from many displeased gamers.

He is so cringe. And implying a backstab from his peers is deeply unprofessional.
I'd honestly just immediately terminate him if I was Richard. He is a net harm to their reputation, particularly as he's an employee literally bitching about his boss to millions of people in the ether like a child. He doesn't compose himself like an adult at all, it's embarrassing.

It's ok to not like the tech or like it, both are fine, but to behave like an impetuous child like this is proof undeniable of severe emotional and mental problems. Ole boy needs help, (as does a certain other poster here who's on a similar anti AI crusade, calling everyone who disagrees with him idiots and spreading his gospel like a crazy person..... people find you off-putting bro, chill out.)

In general, people need to learn to chill on their initial reactions to new tech or seeing anything that they find objectionable really.

Alarmism is often indicative of overly emotional, undeveloped, inexperienced minds.

But the bolded is what half the Internet is doing right now about this. You are literally not permitted to like this tech.

I remember the ridiculous meltdown he had when the PS5 came out and was getting better results than the Series X. He just crumbled because a load of trolls on X were mean to him.

Dude - just turn off your phone!!!

Social media is a cancer, and social media addiction is very real and very sad.
Forums totally don't count..... ;)

It is his company, he can do as he pleases.

Since when does a boss have to run their decisions by their employees?
Does he have to 'run it by them'? No. But it's a company of 6 people and 4 of them are public facing. Would be common courtesy to give them a heads-up that you're about to post a lightning rod that's going to lead to people angrily reaching out to them.

It's what good teammates do.

I agree that it's what good teammates do, that's absolutely true. It's what I would do, it's what most decent folks would do. That being said, Richard can run his business as he sees fit, and bitching about your employer in public is the absolute worst showing imaginable and it absolutely never works out. Just lessens your standing in the company for no reason.

There's a way to handle these things professionally, and John clearly lacks the wherewithal to behave like an adult and take his employer aside to a private conversation, so instead he kicks and screams with his routine mania.

It's pathetic.

What was he thinking blowing up like that on social media lol FFS man what a child.

I actually liked him and his takes but to be so emotional about a technology is really pathetic and makes me question his decision making.

Doesn't this guy have kids? Is he so flush that he thinks he can publically behave like a 13 year old art student who hates tech.

If you had a problem he could have spoken to Rich maybe done a direct special raising the concerns he has and issues with gen ai from his perspective without critisiing Nvidia. I only mention that as I imagine this is a genuine huge scoop for DF getting a preview and an exclusive one or seems. It's huge for the platform and team especially as they are independent.

Rich will likely be measured and just had a very serious chat with him maybe give him some time off. But if it was me and I had two other team members who need to pay bills and run a TECH CHANNEL id sack him.

He can go off and make retro puritan content for the other 70 year old nerds who only like analogue.

barack obama yes GIF by Obama

Well fuckin said.

Whys that fat guy look like the kid that blew his shit smoov off in Full Metal Jacket. He's like a 90s charicature of nerdy gamer.

Yeah, professionalism 101 dictates that John shouldn't have gone public about this and throw his colleagues under the bus, no matter if he's in the right or not. That isn't a good look, and it now can potentially create tension and resentment within the team. When you have a problem with a colleague, you handle it privately, unless it's something egregious that simply can't be rectified that way.

In most corporate jobs/workplaces in general, this would be easily be justifiable for termination.

I always respected John unparalleled passion and appreciation for videogames in all of their facets, so of course this reaction is expected. I would image even Alex position has to be similar, despite the kind of Nvidia coverage we usually get from him. Disappointed by the posts in this Thread.
Doing stuff like what John did is a big no-no, and is grounds for justifiable termination. You never throw shade at, nor talk shit about a coworker/boss online where, in DF's case, thousands of people can see it and join in with you on talking down at said colleagues.

The fact that John did so is unfortunate, regardless of if he's right or not.

Fuck, I dunno man. I just think that so many people hate AI because they are afraid they will lose their job and I just don't think that is a good reason to hate something. It's a common reason, sure, but it is never a good reason. It's situational and ignores anything positive AI could bring. It's also misdirected since AI isn't the thing hiring or even firing you, that's a human.

Can I just say that really, its pretty easy to see where this is going and it's a good place.

The problem is that John has some of the most popular content on the channel and is the most popular personality on the channel. Firing him is not a realistic option.

I remember NXGamer saying ages ago that Wichard was wanting to replace "the American" (John) with him, but it never happened for reasons I can't remember. Sounded more like sour grapes at the time from NXGamer, but if Wichard was never that big of a fan of John to begin with, then I can see his days at DF being numbered if he keeps this up. He has a long history of the neckbeard shitfit followed by the pity party cycle.

Yeah he does have the best content and he's probably my 'favorite' DF member. Still a lil bitch tho

John sometimes reminds me a little bit of Phil Fish with the way he engages with social media....

That's not a compliment

Imagine punching yourself in the face repeatedly and then crying you are getting hit. Just stop using social media if you can't cope with the 'mean' comments. He won't though as he wants to uphold the victim image.

For the love of buddah, they just made a special about dlss5, they werent discussing if hitler was a good guy or not.

They are a tech channel, they saw the CLEAR potential of dlss 5 and made a positive video about it, a boss should not ask permission for such a thing.

Does richard always need to think about this dude's mental health every time he put out something on HIS damn channel? Maybe richard is not the problem here...

So, again. I think I said this already - not permission. Obviously he doesn't have to do that. But can you, with a straight face, tell me that discourse around gaming and AI - separately - are anywhere close to on the hinge still?

Now put those two things together. Do you think reasonable people are the ones being vocal about it right now?

I'll say it again, for the 3rd time - Richard does not need to ask for permission. Obviously he doesn't. But here's the reality. DF - whether you like it or not - is seen as the authoritative voice for video game performance analysis and things like that. Writing the article Richard did, whether he intended for it to come off that way of not, can be seen as an endorsement of what NVIDIA showed.

The unhinged individuals who have a strong dislike for AI and have strong opinions about all things video game related and even stronger opinions about all things AI in video games will see that endorsement, and lash out at the people who do the endorsement.

So the least Richard could have done, is give the team a heads up and say "hey, this is going out." And John could have decided for himself if he wanted to be logged in to twitter or wherever.

And you think that would have stopped all the people "harassing" him on twitter? You already know the answer.

So yeah richard could have said something but the result would have been be the same.

Seems like John and Alex weren't told about the DLSS 5 video.

What will happen? Get your predictions in.

I mean it really needs that shitty DLSS5 video to understand DF is just handled to famous web passionate guys and is not about real graphic tech professionals ? Seriously? It's in front of our eyes every single time.

If he had a warning that the article was going live, he could have logged off or ignored twitter.

People would have been slinging shit his way, but if he knew, he could avoid it. Not sure what about this is hard to understand.

YES! We're on the same page.

And I'm sure he would have preferred to do that before the article dropped.

Look at that. Common ground on NeoGaf. What a day.

Leadbetter will be weak as piss if he doesn't sack this guy now....we all know it's a pattern with him, and with the way AI is going, he'll end up having these tantrums more and more often. Also, the dude is like 44 and he's acting like he's 4 - I see he's locked down his X account again.

Any other employer would have got rid of him when he flatly refused to do any work on the Potter game, and even bragged about it on twitter.

I love John's videos and expertise but god he manages each time to come across as a thinnest skinned little bitch on his social media interactions. Probably anxiety and mental health issues, I just wish he would stay away from social media and do his good stuff.
I actually agree with this. Guy is passionate and has some great vids but my god, he's a fucking sook!

Bluesky accounts are instant red flags, I need not elaborate

4. I remember John being a paranoid schizophrenic during Covid (the common cold), not a good look
And these 2 statements show why you are a brain dead fucking clown. Jesus Christ, get some education that isn't from some inbred Facebook group. Jackass.
