PlayStation begin rolling out age verification checks

As a parent who had to jump through hoops to let my kids play borderlands I would be very pissed off if the sprung this shit on us in the US.

Age verification laws are retarded. It's the responsibility of the shithead parents that can't raise their children properly, not the responsibility of the government, who then takes away privacy rights from everyone else due to those same shithead parents.

But really governments just want more control/power.
Like all stupid government laws or company policies, they typically get stricter over time. That's because some reason both groups cater to the lowest common denominator. Even if those shitstorm instances are 1 in a million chance, for sake of safety, not getting sued, and pure adult babysitting, everyone has to live through draconian policies because some small number of numbnuts screwed it up for everyone else.

This won't work for non-obscene content in the United States First Amendment law (see Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association), but may be permissible with social media, if seen not as speech per se, but as a platform that doesn't intrinsically demand speech protections.

For obscene materials (which I would wager the current Court would say includes any pornography viewed by people under the age of 18), age verification is alarmingly important.

So, the UK sucks, as it's doing this everywhere, but the premise that the internet and its social spaces are dangerous for developing minds is sorta obviously correct.

Indeed, the common denominator is "protect the kids." Regardless, it's the responsibility of the parents and no one else.

Watch governments try to go after VPNs next.

I would imagine/hope they are just complying with whatever dystopian surveillance crap UK is up to at the moment and this won't roll out anywhere else.
A lot of US states aren't far behind and Congress is debating a bill right now to require OS vendors to create age verification.

Ahh so instead of going after people who hurt children mentally and physically. They just take away rights from the majority of people that are not. makes perfect sense.

Question I have is if they can with hold you accessing things you bought?

I'm starting to think it's time to buy an old ps2 and GameCube (and other offline stuff) and only play old stuff going forward. This is bonkers

If we're paying for PSN and features are removed then surely that could qualify for a class action lawsuit?

Make we should all be suing the government for enforcing this? They've got more money than Sony if we want a big payday.

Yes, these age verifications laws are extremely anti-consumer.

Just got the email, obviously will ignore- just like I did the Xbox one.

Hand over your passport/driving license to rando companies who can and have been breached, and will likely sell the data to advertisers? Nope...

Being Spanish, and given our shared history where English pirates waited to plunder our ships in South America...

I even feel sorry for what the UK has become. I was in Birmingham last year because I wanted to explore the city, and what a filthy cesspool of immigrants they have there.

I feel nostalgic for better times in the United Kingdom.

This online safety stuff is total bullshit.

I'm already having to have a VPN setup so that I can see some of the screenshots that you lot post, because imgur is banned in the UK..!

Didn't realise some people were actually paying to see my crappy screenshots. I'll try and do better in the future.

You realise the Conservatives created the 'Online Safety Act', right?

The ole PlayStation Pro will be off and the PC will be the go to, which is better anyway, but I enjoy console more.

I'll verify my age and my own kids and what they can play.

This should end well. Remember when Sony was storing CC and address details in unencrypted plain text files and got hacked? But hey, here's a "free" copy of Modracers as compensation.

Everyone should look into their local privacy laws because I bet the government is overstepping here and opening themselves up to lawsuits.

The classic liberals vs conservatives is no more. The real division is pro-globalist vs anti-globalists.

And this is a dystopian globalist thing, needless to say.

Fuck Sony and any other company bending the knee, or worse, actively cooperating with tyrants.

Right there with you, brother. What unbelievable arrogance - fuck your privacy, give us your information. Whether it's the UK who started this or all the companies who just offer up their customers' info. without a fight - they can all fuck off.

Not a problem, I will get it done asap, I have no problem with the likes of Sony and Microsoft having my data and photo, after all they want whats best for us, they are our friends 💚💙💪

You can have an account created at the very beginning of the Internet and they'll still ask you to verify, because it's never only about verification.

Just use the text to mobile. If you using 2 step verification on your account you already gave them your phone number.
