Marathon |OT| A Shell of its Former Self.

At a glance, very pleased with what Bungie is planning for season 2 (and beyond hopefully). This tells me this team is able to act fast based on feedback and aren't afraid to try out different things for Marathon. Only concern I have is once Marathon has PVE-only, I hope they don't mess up the balance between PVE and PVP like in Destiny. Really hope this game grows into a bigger success story.

So this wasnt just a dream afterall

The Office Crying GIF

It will most definitely will not be huge in content. A make-shift mode which feels like a Survival mode with extraction aim.
But damn I am more confident now Sony WILL support this game for 2 Years and any sort of PvE mode guarantees the game won't cross dead game waters.

Season 2 still will do about the same average CCU as Season 1 which is huge to stop the bleeding.
I'm assuming it will simply be a Destiny Patrol Zone.

Load in, complete a number of events, and then extract. We might even see exactly the same types of event as Destiny (drillers, dropships etc.)

They can also add Lost Sector-like areas, to allow for boss mechanics.

This is probably the biggest beacon of light for me...

"Bubbles, 'nade spam, and snipers can make it feel like every engagement at the endgame, with all the stuff everyone has accumulated, is chaotic, fast, and stressful in a bad way. Taking time to make important tactical decisions can feel like a luxury. Spawn rushing and lobby clearing are dominant strategies that pull the pacing too far and make matches too predictable."

Always felt Marathon was at it's best when fights felt like digital chess and not Power Slap. Hoping thier statement applies to most of the game, and not just Cryo.

We spawned right next to the terrace locked room (we had the key) and were inside within 10-15 seconds of the match started. By 45 seconds we had a team on us. We managed to beat them but fuck me, that's way too fast. Sometimes there is no breathing room at all.

Just reads like a rather vague, random hodge podge of ideas.

Marathon will not survive with minor tweaks. The pve mode they mention needs to be huge.

Agreed 100%.

I do not own Marathon as I'm just not a PvP gamer, but I did play quite a bit during the server slam. Speaking for myself the news, while very vague, is promising and it gives me hope that someday Marathon might appeal to me. In order for that to happen the new PvE content needs to be substantial, just like you said. It sounds like S2 will be minor changes and additions but still very much the same game as it is today, but S3 is where things could potentially start to change in big ways.

Hopefully Marathon survives long enough to see the changes come to fruition, but it does sound like Sony and Bungie are committed so that too is promising. 🤞

What would substantial PVE look like though?

Damn what a monster outpost run. We went into Dormitories to get keys, we ended up fighting for 8 minutes and wiped 3 squads. This game plays so differently when you are geared lol. Im really gonna enjoy this last 2 weeks

Good question.

I love Arc Raiders but I play it exclusively as a PvE game, which is possible due to the aggression based matchmaking. Yeah I occasionally get killed by rats trolling the friendly queues, but I'm one of those who won't fight back because I don't want to get out of the "peaceful" queue!

If Marathon implemented a straight up PvE mode, basically the same extraction game it is today but with PvP turned off, coupled with some robust endgame progression stuff, then I'd probably buy the game. An actual single player or co-op campaign ala Halo style would be sweet too but I don't see that happening, its too much work at this point.

You know what this game needs? Runner downed stats at the end. We had a round where i downed like 6, but my teammates did all the finishers so i ended up with 0 elims, felt bad :(
You know what else it needs?

Ammo differentiation and ammo trade offs. Some ammo should be noticiably better at certain things and noticiably worse at other things

Examples:

Battery ammo kills bots quicker
Volt ammo overheats runners
Heavy ammo concusses players a bit
Light ammo kills players a bit quicker

It might already do this, but it should feel more pronounced imo. I can't tell too much of a difference other than battery weapons generally sucking.

Campaign with cut scenes.

Firefight mode where you get a purple kit. Survive 10 waves with randomized objectives and enemies. Beat boss to get rewards and take the purple kit out to use in the PvP modes.
I wouldnt mind if they turn this game into destiny with pvp, pve and extraction elements. I just love the world they built and ofc the art

I've taken a long break from this game simply because all the sweating is exhausting, and sometimes I just want to hop on and play games without comms. I'm happy for the season 2 stuff though, I'll def be playing a bit before s1 ends, but I'm super interested in the new modes.

Definitely come back after tuesdays patch. Shits gonna be wild for the last 2 weeks

Just catching up (again). This is wild. Surely the clock is ticking now, they really are going all in. The floor is Season 2 launch if it doesn't grow from here then shit is kicking off.

This is unprecedented, not only did they spend 250 million dollars on a game just for us, they are spending even more. I might get pissed again so I can wake up to this news again tomorrow.

I should not have clicked to read retard in boxes posts. Homie wants ammo to different things when it already does.

Imagine thinking volt ammo and volt guns are same as heavy ammo and heavy guns.

Neither Marathon nor Arc have anything resembling "robust endgame progression" though. Arc's endgame is endless collection of junk to fill bars. Its hardest NPC are trivially easy. Marathon's Cryo Archive is only special because of how difficult it is to prepare for and the other teams. You could kill compiler in an afternoon without dealing with other players. What is it exactly that you're looking for in terms of endgame

I believe that you would buy a copy but I question whether or not you would actually stick around to do the same things you're doing in Arc. Did you buy Arc before or after the announcement of ABMM?

Campaign would be cool but a tough ask. I was with you until the end. Why wouldn't you be happy with a complete separation of PvE and PvP like Tarkov? Why purple gear and not a skin or title for completing challenges related to the mode? The mode should be fun enough to stand on its own.

The gear ask also has no real point. One purple shield for every PvE player who kills NPC will rapidly turn into one thousand purple shields for the guy who spent their time playing extraction instead. I'd rather PvE expand the setting and create scenarios that help players build confidence for eventually playing the normal mode. Instead of bot waves make it a gauntlet run through perimeter where bots are camped in common peeking locations to teach people where to look and funnel them through alternate paths. Something more than kill piss easy AI and get a prize.

Went in green/grey came out of Perimeter with this lot lol. Think we had over 100k between me and my randoms. Probably one of my best regular runs. Caught 2 teams fighting over the Gold room at south they got away but figured they would go for the Hauler extract, they did. They did not sound happy. :)

Have yet to see a gold shield lol.

Not seen many outside of Cryo myself tbh.

They played so badly, sat in the corner of the key room as soon as we pushed they jumped out of the vent and scarpered. Only two exfils on the map so it was fairly obvious where they where heading, even then played passively and tried to hit the extract instead of a straight up fight. Good times.

Didn't have much time to sort he inventory or we would have got out with a lot more.

Ya fair enough. One of these days I'll make it outta Cryo lol. My time there is limited as I'm relagated to crew fill.

Could have been more but one of the bags was on the exfil so we had it wait till it popped before looting it, left us making tracks it to final but just made it, no time to drop half my worthless shit.

Should be good fun this last 2 weeks shits going to be chaos all round.

Looks like the cosmetics will start to get interesting in S2.

This is the only one that mildly piqued my interest, though I typically buy black skins to be less visible...

The recon rabbit one looked awesome. They really need to up their games on the cosmetic front, both shell and gun cosmetics are mostly bad
That Recon one was definitely striking, just not my vibe. The gun cosmetics are definitely ***. I pretty much think the base black colors are the best because it gives off a semi serious tone to the weapons. I see what they're going for in terms of matching your weapon skins with your character skin but I just want that Black Hawk Down aesthetic (yes that red skin makes me a hypocrite).

Interested to see what else they have cooking.

The crazy patch somes tomorrow. Gonna be fun :)
Going to be the best part of the season. Every run will involve keys, Wardens and tons of loot. They should do stuff like this mid season as well. Why did they not even have double xp weekends?

Convinced this game will find a decent audience at some point, its too good not to. My taste in games can't be that far removed from the masses can it?

I hopped on for two cryo runs yesterday. Got my ass blown out.

Will be playing tomorrow though for some shenanigans. Going into zero parades on Thursday.

Those new skins for season 2 are fucking fire if real. God damn my wallet!

Roll call ladies. Anyone who liked the game who dropped off at some point during the season not coming back for season 2, even just to check out the changes?

If not why not?

Have found the game far less sweaty the last 3-4 days. Many runs lasting the whole duration with several runners killed and events done. Has been reasonably smooth sailing levelling up. Should get to 100 I imagine. Mainly been playing perimeter with a little dire marsh thrown in.

Did like 10 runs (crew fill + sponsored kit) on Perimeter/Marsh yesterday and exfilled only twice, at least we managed to do both Warden and Anomaly/Intercept each successful run.
