Most of the Maxis titles I want are like #150 and beyond. :(

Oh well. Should I start with Dungeon Keeper or Wing Commander? I haven't played any of the games that went up today.

Dungeon Keeper is much more playable due to age but it really depends on what kind of game you want.

Dammit... was really hoping for LucasArts.

I'm sure LucasArts is inevitable, but EA was the grand prize for GoG. Every other publisher will probably be relatively easy to sign in comparison.

I can't wait for the day when GOG reveals that the System Shock series will finally be making its way to the site. Can you imagine the reaction on GAF? It will be EPIC

In the meantime, this really is huge news--finally, a company that delivers on its hype. I've never played any of the games uploaded today, so where do I start? Which one holds up the best? Wing Commander looks very interesting, but I know nothing about it!

SMAC is gonna be on GOG eventually? Never got a chance to get my hands on that game.

How is Dungeon Keeper? I think I found a demo for it, hope it works. The closest style of game I've ever played is Evil Genius.

Most excited for the possibility of Little Big Adventure, all over my face :D Dungeon Keeper 2 will be instantly mine as well, can't make up my mind on the non-underworld Ultima games just yet.

So the EA deal includes all the old Westwood games as well? I wonder how Eye of the Beholder holds up these days.

I feel very positive about GoG right now, I'm sure they'll make System Shock happen. And Lucasarts, eventually. They WILL!

Not eventually, this month :p

May or may not include all of them, but I would definitely expect to see some of them. I'd like both Dune 2 and Dune 2000, personally.

Anyone?

Dune 2k I would love to see. Dune 2 has aged terribly unfortunately (then again most RTSes do). I hope NOX is on the list; never got to finish that game even with one class, lost the discs but I still have the manual and box! Maybe they'll even release Emperor?

God, NOX multiplayer was so much damned fun back then.

Thanks. I'll start with Dungeon Keeper, the concept sounds great since I'm a pretty evil person myself.

EOB (they had to make some deal with Atari/Wizards as well) probably not, Lands of Lore more likely.

I'm not saying it won't happen (I'm amazed that any of the D&D games are on the service) but Eye of the Beholder was published by SSI, which should fall under either the Atari or Ubisoft brand now. Getting Westwood was probably another component but I wouldn't hold my breath of the EotB games.

As for the games released right now, the "most to least playable" order would be:
Dungeon Keeper
Ultima Underworlds (2, specifically)
Wing Commander: Privateer

When the next three come out it'll probably go:
Alpha Centauri
Dungeon Keeper
Crusader
Magic Carpet
Ultima
Wing Commander

They're all good games but as you go down the list you'll start hitting more and more "old-game interface" issues.

I always said GOG + EA made too much sense to not happen one day, but... holy freaking crap! I can't believe that day has come.

Shame about System Shock and Syndicate not being on the cards (yet?), but Dungeon Keeper and Alpha Centauri alone are blowing my mind.

Windows 95 games are a big donut hole for compatibility at this point. DOSBox is awesome enough to run basically anything from the DOS era, and basically anything newer than Windows 95 runs fine enough on its own with just some patches or tweaks, but a lot of the circa 1995-1998 or so stuff is kind of in limbo.

So any reason to pick the GOG version over that?

It's not "the real deal", since it still differs from the original for some elements (can't say what exactly, though). That's because they are recreating the game without knowledge of the source code (I think).

OMFGGGGGHHH HNNNGGGGHH ALPHA CENTAURI ALL OVER MY FACE!

Best CIV game ever, finally available at large again.

The Witcher and GOG, CDP are the new GODS OF GAMING!

The Witcher 2 and GOG
Portal 2 and Steam

I don't understand why so many big-name publishers seem to have such a hard time with the PC market when these things exist and are all over my face.

But that's a topic for another day.

Freakin' EA. Wow!

Freakin' EA. Wow!

They're all busy chasing the CoD unicorn.

You see, a profitable business doesn't pay the bonuses CoD does. Executives want fat bonuses.

Getting EA's back catalogue of games on GOG.com is basically like finding the Fountain of Youth. The 90's have been immortalised. I can't wait to play most of these games again, and some of these games for the first time (like Dungeon Keeper, Ultima Underworld and Privateer, none of which I ever got to play).

GOG.com itself is like finding the Fountain of Youth, with or without EA. What they've achieved in just 3 years is incredible. There's obviously some cross-over with Steam and other download services but if you told me just a couple of years ago how easily Planescape: Torment or Gabriel Knight or whatever would be made available to me I'd have thought you were nuts. It's a goldmine for classic Master Race™ gaming, and they've still got so far to go if need be (more pre-VGA games, Win95 games, etc).

Sorry, I'm in a very "loving CD Projekt" mood today. Sometimes, the internet brings us good things! ^_^

First time seeing Dungeon Keeper and Ultima Underworld 1&2 besides screenshots. DK looks rough trying to play, while underworld looks and feels pretty damn good for how old it is.

What do you like about Underworld? What are the controls like (keyboard/mouse or keyboard-only)?

Also, can we get some impressions for each of these new releases from people who've played them (either before or for the first time)?

Awesome news, EA has a huge library of titles and it'll be fantastic to see them... but nothing can match the physical products for a lot of those older ones, all those thick paper manuals, maps, etc. just aren't the same when they're just pdfs. Still, outstanding news for sure.

Also, no Syndicate or System Shock yet? Hopefully they come eventually.

This is absolutely true, and it's a big problem. But actually, it doesn't stop at 1998 -- there are games all the way up to the '00s that don't work on a modern computer. Medieval: Total War won't run on any modern NVidia graphics drivers for instance, and it's from 2002. Metal Gear Solid 2 is even newer, and it won't start on Vista 32-bit either; I doubt it's any better on 7, though I haven't tried it.

And the problem is, and fixing that problem will require some serious work... you'd either need to get into each games' code and fix it there, or come up with a complex set of Windows, driver, and DirectX emulators for the versions of those that each game requires to work properly. Wouldn't be fun at all to have to make, I imagine.

UU 1&2 are setup like a janky fps, but not bad for the game. As for UU 1&2 looking/playing good, I was just surprised to see how good it looks in motion compared to some other games of that era. It even doesn't look to bad blown up on my screen compared to window mode. Dungeon Keeper is harsh full screen and to small windowed. I need to see if I can resize window mode.

I'm not sure what you mean by janky fps... I'm mainly concerned with mouselook.
