I mean at least Nichijou tries and occasionally succeeds at its goal, however unimpressive the product as a whole is. K-On doesn't even do the moe thing all that well, much less anything else.
If that was true, there really wouldn't be that rapid fanbase. This is something that you can be factually wrong about!

Actually wait, it does look pretty and animates well. For whatever that's worth I guess.

well
the level of moe-ness is decided by its fans
and the many k-on fans are insane so....

Ikuhara is not Chuck Norris nor could he ever hope to reach such a divine level of awesomeness.
I'm pretty sure one of those two gentlemen brought us a series of great movies and shows and the other just acted in them.

The Tatami Galaxy Ep. 2

This episode was easier to follow, I only had to pause once.
I'm not sure how I feel about everything being reset at the end of each episode, assuming the pattern continues. The deja vu jokes were amusing, though. I hope the show doesn't become too formulaic. I definitely like Akashi. <3

I'm not really certain what there is to dislike about Penguindrum. It's well produced, engaging, consistently progresses the plot, and feels like a very original work.

Didn't you and Darkside even have avatars from the show?

Yes I had an avatar of a penguin. I liked the show at first but have come to dislike it week after week. I just don't find it very good. I honestly just don't get it. I'm not going to bash the show because there's still a ton of episodes to go and I might come around to liking it but it hasn't happened yet.

Yeah I'll correct myself. It's extremely effective at catering to its main audience at the very least.

Of course, so did stuff like Transformers soooo

I don't think that's a problem unless you suffer from Firehawk syndrome.

Yeah but its still an improvement over K-On which is funny for 0 minutes an episode.
Nichijou is funnier for a lot more than 3 minutes an episode, but I do agree about K-On there... K-On isn't funny, not at all. Of course it isn't really trying to be, but still, it isn't.

zeroshiki said:
Nichijou was kinda boring though. Very hit or miss. Fumoffu was laughs at a mile a minute. KyoAni can do comedy no problem. They just chose a crappy source this time around.
Nichijou is funnier than Fumoffu.

Bro-On! proves that only cute girls should be allowed in animes. No boys allowed.
Why? It's kind of stupid that there are so many "group of girls" shows but no "group of boys" ones...

jman2050 said:
But Nichijou isn't cute girls doing funny things, so I don't see the comparison.
Nichijou does have some of that, but yes, it's mostly about comedy. The Professor/Nano parts often emphasize the cute as well as funny side more, though.

hosannainexcelsis said:
I feel Nichijou is already KyoAni doing different things, as it's not nearly as otaku pandering as most of their previous shows. If anything, it bombing will teach them to do K-ON and Haruhi forever.
This is a really good point. I agree, if the show sold less than expected, the main reason probably is that it isn't pandering otaku-bait, it's a good, more general-audience comedy. Anime buyers in Japan want lots of pandering, not quality. Sad.

Uchip said:
nichijou is just random stuff thrown at you in a long line of "is this funny? how about this?"
This is true, and a lot of those things are funny. It's a sketch comedy series, full of funny sketches.

Instro said:
I really don't get the Nichijou is boring stuff. I mean the 2nd half the show has been about as funny as Fumoffu and has amazing animation all the time.
The "Nichijou is boring" stuff has never made much sense to me either...

Geneijin said:
The 1st half wasn't as good as Infinite Stratos. Who would want to buy the 1st half of Nichijou?
Bah, Nichijou was good from episode one. Sure, the second half is better, but the first half was good too...

sleepykyo said:
I liked the second raid. I was under the impression they tried to outdo the second raid and it wasn't well received.
You are correct.

This is the mentality that caused BamCo to put Jupiter into THE IDOLM@STER 2. That went so well, I'm sure BamCo is itching to do it again someday.

They probably are, because BamCo is a company which LOVES trollng it's fans.

I did. And I do 'like' the show, a good bit actually. I don't, however, think that it's as infallible as most here try to make it out to be--given the past few episodes. It does feel original, and that I appreciate, but neither the plot nor the characters have progressed in the past few eps, and the whole thing really feels like a masturbatory mash up of ideas that haven't mixed as well as hoped.

I would be okay with that over my current tag. Also I rather like the Evangelion dub.

The Tatami Galaxy Ep. 3

This was a much more dense episode than the one prior, I may need to rewatch it. Most definitely a lot flew over my head, no pun intended.

And the first half was inconsistent for many who don't want to buy those volumes of the first half.

You know, the fact that putting male characters in something is "trolling" really says all that needs to be said about the franchise's fanbase.

Yeah but Volume 3 outsold Vol 2 in the first week, so take that! Albeit it's still sad numbers :(

And nothing wrong with liking Nichijou more than Fumoffu.

As I've said many times before, that doesn't tell me anything by itself!
It just aims to portray the mudane everyday aspects of normal life. That said, those kind of works in the genre usually aim to put a large emphasis on the character interactions and mood of the setting.

In all seriousness though, I think that I could find 12 episodes of Nichijou that are as good or better than what is present in Fumoffu. I mentioned this somewhat on the last page; I find Fumoffu to be a bit overrated as a comedy show, particularly because it relies way too heavily on Sagara trolling Chidori over and over again. It gets too predictable after a while thanks to a number of major cast members being marginalized in favor of a small cast or shitty fringe characters that were not heavily involved in the other 2 seasons. The best comedy episode of FMP is the 2nd Raid OVA since it pretty much includes all the main characters doing funny shit.

I like Nichijou because it has a relatively large cast and the bits/sketches are pretty varied, with the exception of a handful of episodes in the first half that were heavily focused on Mai trolling Yuko which I think caused people to drop the show.

That they have a healthy respect for the main characters.

[Penguin Drum 8]

Suddenly we have a god-tier episode with amazing direction.

Hells fucking yes. Best episode yet!

Simoun 3:

For fans of mecha series, this series follows a number of conventions from mecha anime. For example, a Simoun requires two pilots, in classic mecha fashion. The auriga sits in the front seat and is responsible for flying the Simoun. The sagitta sits in the back seat and handles everything else, which doesn't appear to be that much since Simouns don't have any weapons to speak of besides the Ri Maajons. The two are called a pair.

In general, certain Sybilla are suited to being aurigas and others are suited to be sagittas. This is pretty common convention in mecha anime, and as in those shows, the pairs are generally sorted into romantic couples. Simoun mixes it up a bit though and you'll see characters fly in both the front and back seats during the show.

As ploddingly explained in this episode, and there is LOT of plodding exposition early on, I had forgotten how much actually, even the mechanics who work on the Simouns don't really know how they work. I won't waste time talking about that now because how the Simouns really work is one of the mysteries of the show.

I'll comment a bit about the Sibylla of Chor Tempest, since the cast is filling out nicely.

Aaeru: the stereotypical gung-ho fighter pilot. Her name is significant in ways that would crazily spoil the story if I explained it now. For now, just know that her name matters. She normally flies auriga.

Neviril: the pretty-pretty pretty girl that everybody wants to come inside of. Well, more or less. She is regarded as the finest pilot in the country and is the leader of Chor Tempest, which was regarded as the most elite Chor in the country when the series begins. She normally flies auriga before the start of this series.

Floe: the ditzy blond type. She's bad with names, a bit airheaded, and wants to be everyone's friend.

Kaimu: Alty's sister. She wears the megane and doesn't get along with Alty very well. This is covered later.

Alty: Kaimu's sister. She doesn't wear the megane.

Paraietta: the masculline bishounen type. She's deeply infatuated with Neviril but alas, this love is entirely unrequited. She is Neviril's second in command and generally manages the Chor when Neviril is absent.

Rodoreamon: the gentle ojou-sama type. She comes from a wealthy family and is descended from a long line of Simoun Sybilla. She is afraid of rats. She always wears her hair in long braids.

Morinas: Mai Waifu finally debuts in this episode. She's curious about how Simouns work, which helps drive some of the narrative later on. She's also a bit of a bishounen but those hips don't lie, she's definitely a woman. Hnnnnnnnnng. Her seiyuu is actually Nana Mizuki, who you will recognize as the current incarnation of Saya in CLAMP-B.

Limone: the youngest of the Sybilla, she's always seen eating something sweet. She's the closest this show comes to having a loli.

3 Sybilla haven't been introduced yet. I will talk about them when they make their debuts.

Episode Summary:

Morinas joins Chor Tempest. She also declares to Neviril that she wants to be her pair.

The girls decides to practice in the Maaju pool together, but they wonder if Neviril will join them. They enter the pool without her and are rather disorganized without their leader.

Daily shelling is now occurring as Argentum regularly fires from airships stationed off the coast outside of Simulacrum territory. The war is still somewhat distant from the Arcus Prima, which isn't actively stationed at the front lines since one of it's Chors (Caput) is, well, kaput and the other (Tempest) is currently not flying combat missions since they don't have the full 12 members.

Neviril appears and joins the group.

Yeah, not a whole lot happens this episode besides more exposition.

Oh nothing against you, I happened to see branduil saying there were spoilers in your post before I actually saw it. I tend to skip over most posts relating Penguin Drum anyway, until I've seen the episode, for fear of spoilers.

Yeah, seriously...

Nichijou - Nichijou needs to be defended, it's a great show with a really high good-jokes-per-episode ratio, way above what you usually see in anime. And all without being otaku-centric humor, too? Truly rare.

I mean, I like otaku-centric humor shows sometimes, sure, but it's great to see something like this.

I'm sure you're right about that.

I don't know if that was the best comedy episode, no, but it is true that Fumoffu focuses a lot on some minor characters who barely even appear in the rest of the franchise, and centers around Sousuke being an idiot over and over again, to perhaps too big a degree. I mean, the "Mai trolls Yukko" thing is done too much in Nichijou, but it least it has variety the rest of the time.

2nd Raid>Fumoffu. :P
I liked the first season best, of the three anime seasons. Between TSR and Fumoffu I'm not sure though, both have some plusses and minuses. I definitely don't like the direction the manga (or, probably, the books, which apparently are similar) goes in after TSR, though. But as for just the animes, it's really hard to compare TSR and Fumoffu when they're such very different shows, one being all comedy and the other being almost all serious.

Maybe TSR is better, but I'm not sure... it's hard to say.

I like Nichijou because it has a relatively large cast and the bits/sketches are pretty varied, with the exception of a handful of episodes in the first half that were heavily focused on Mai trolling Yuko which I think cause people to drop the show.
Yeah, the wide variety of silly and amusing skits definitely is the show's biggest strength, I agree.

Just because Monty Python is one of the greatest comedy shows ever doesn't mean that everything else in the genre is an unfunny waste of budget! :)

No, I think that making a change like that to an ongoing series is quite different from making an entirely new show based around the concept of "sort of like some other show but with characters of the other gender"...

Geneijin said:

I would hope that sales will pick up in the second half, but darnit, the first half was good too.

Simoun 4:

The tone of the show is all over the place in the early going. It settles down somewhat later on.

This is the first episode which puts a bit of background information in place for one of the enemy nations, the Argentum Archipelago. They are on the other side of the ocean from Simulacrum but because they are an island nation, they have a high level of airship technology among other things. Their technology is however based on coal and steam and the extent of their industrialization is such that the islands are heavily polluted and the citizens' lifespans severely shortened by breathing air which is basically poisoned. Argentum covets the technology in Simouns not just because of their imperialist ambitions but also because it would dramatically improve the quality of life for their citizens if they could abandon coal and steam power.

Argentum is also notable for a rather short bit of exposition in this episode: their citizens are surgically given genders at birth by assignment. They don't get to choose their genders the way the citizens of Simulacrum do. This is an interesting bit of juxtaposition and it firmly grounds Argentum as the nation on Daikuuriku populated with individuals who most analagous to humans, and not only in the self-destructive way their nation's technology has developed.

In unrelated news, Aaeru has a pretty mean spinkick. She's also not afraid to get her hands dirty. Hawt.

Episode Summary:

Aaeru takes the new members of Chor Tempest out in a Simoun to try and find out who she is compatible to pair with. Neviril declares Aaeru will never be her pair in a confrontation from opposite sides of a closed door.

Aaeru first takes Morinas out and they demonstrate they are fundamentally not compatible pretty quickly. It should be noted later on that Morinas flies auriga, she's pretty clearly not suited to flying sagitta.

Aaeru meets Vyura for the first time as they are assigned to be roommates. Vyura is in Chor Rubor and is their regina (commander). Neviril is of course Chor Tempest's regina.

Aaeru then takes Limone out at night while everyone else is eating dinner. They get into more of an adventure than planned when they are lured by a fake crashed Simoun model on the group and fall into an Argentum soldier's trap. The Argentum soldier has infiltrated deeply into Simulacrum's territory with the intention of luring a Simoun's pilots to the ground, ambushing them, capturing it, and flying it back to Argentum.

However the would-be Simoun thief, severely ill with the airway disease which all Argentum people apparently have, discovers that he cannot fly a Simoun. He is, after all, assigned his gender at birth (see above) and only people of Daikuuriku who haven't chosen a gender yet can fly them, for reasons which for now will remain unknown.

Unable to communicate with each other, the Sybilla and the Argentum operative watch each other warily as the night goes on. Aaeru, who is apparently always ready for moments when she is captured and tied up, produces a knife and cuts her rope and tries to overpower her captor. Since the Argentum operative is roughly twice her height and weight, it's fairly easy for him to retreat to the cockpit of the Simoun and shoot at the Sybilla to keep them from approaching it. He is, however, unable to fly it, and his ravaged body can no longer take the strain and he coughs up a gushing fountain of blood and he dies there.

Aaeru, who apparently does this kind of thing all the time, cuts the dead operative's stiffened hands from the controls and dumps the body so she and Limone can fly back home. At the end they clean the Simoun themselves so as to hide the evidence of violent struggle inside it.
