This doesn't just happen in the IT industry, but being in the industry myself, I can attest to this. My friend works for a company where the CEO's hobby seems to be stealing admins from other companies and paying them more.

I'm still building up experience right now, but once I hit 5+ years experience I'll be able to ask for 90k - 100k+ a year easily as well. System admin is a great job if you put in the time and dedication to expand your skill set.

Problem is trying to get the experience to even start my career in that field.

You pretty much need to teach yourself. Also, start as a level 1 tech somewhere doing basic support and work on a degree (if you don't have one already) on something IT related.

You'll probably make around $25k - $35k a year for a while as you build up experience. Once you have the necessary experience and skills under your belt, you can jump way up in salary. Just expect to be on call 24/7 as they're going to get their money's worth from you, of course.

there is this about men. you can embitter and torment them from birth. you can make them waiters and sailors when they want to be authors. you can make them servants of their passions - weak - timorous - querulous - vain - egotistic - puny and afraid. then, having made them so, you can trick them and mock them with all of the implements of fate - lead them on only to betray them, obsess them with hopeless dreams, punish them with senseless accidents, and harass them with wretched fears. you can buffet them, bait them, enrage them - load upon them all evils and follies in this vale of obstruction and tears. but, even at that, there is yet one thing that you cannot do. you can never make them, under any provocation, say die. and therein lies their acquittal.

I have a BS and I just recently got laid off from a Technical Support after working there for 3 years. All these companies are looking for people with 5+ years of experience, which I don't have. I mean, can I volunteer or shadow someone in some company just to get some damn experience?

We have two admin positions open if you want to apply.

http://www.site5.com/about/careers/

The server specialist pretty much just monitors servers and fixes server issues throughout the day, disables sites that have been hacked, etc. and the level 2 admin does tickets fixing issues with websites and troubleshooting server related issues. So, give it a shot if you want.

Well, I'm not going to relocate to Colorado (if that's where the company is based in). Thanks anyways bro.

It looks like your reading skills aren't quite up to par. The very first thing it mentions on that page:

You will be working from the comfort of your home anywhere in the world!

I went to drop off a job application for a state job today not thinking I'd talk to anyone. Turns out the security guard called up the person who would be doing the hiring and I chatted with him for a bit. I was wearing jeans and a button up. Whoops.

Trying to teach you a lesson, as you would've had your answer and a lot more if you had taken the time to properly read the page. It also says this at the bottom:

Only selected applicants that adhere to these instructions will be contacted as it is indicative of the applicant's ability to read, comprehend, and follow instructions.

In the admin field you need to have attention to detail. If you don't have that, then you'll never be successful.

Anyone get to the point where you've sent out so many applications that you get shocked when you get a response? I got one for a resume I sent on Wednesday, and my heart skipped a beat.

You got nothing to lose, call them. You get experience this way and what to expect and how to approach a potential employer. Don't let this opportunity get to waste --- even if it doesn't amount to a job

Oh, I did call them back. I never let someone get off the hook of telling me I didn't get the job. If you're going to take the responsibility of hiring people, you also have to take the responsibility of informing people they didn't get the job. Not calling an interviewee back when you tell them to is unprofessional and even cowardly. Turns out I was right, I didn't get the job. Maybe not the worst outcome, since I'm planning to go back to school soon.

Just got a job, haven't even started and I think I'm gonna hate it.

Bar support for about the same as 13 dollars an hour US.

Can't complain though, I was looking for 5 months beforehand ( well more like 2 months, most of the time I was goofing off after finishing my degree)

I'm just kinda bummed because I'm 28 doing the same shitty job that I had at 18. At least I can now train in the daytime and get my experience up all the while covering my bills while I look for a proper job.

So I just had a friend who is going to be unemployed starting today. She works for BofA and they are closing down her branch. She just got the news.

On a brighter side, my other friend who was unemployed finally found a job on Friday. He starts on Oct 15th. I wish him lots of luck.

Happy to hear you tried and sorry it didn't work our. School is indeed a nice option - Masters, I presume?

i had a second interview for a job a couple weeks ago but they havent called me back yet.

ive emailed them, but no response from the right people (my email was forwarded to the correct person) im planning on calling today, but i feel like they would have called me by now if they had decided to hire me.

should i even be hopeful at this point?

they ended up saying they are going with "more qualified" candidates. le sigh. it wouldn't have been bad if they didn't leave me with a positive feeling after the interview and leaving me hanging for 2 weeks.

I'm likely going back to school. It isn't a prudent decision, I know, but I really have no choice. I'm 27 years old, still living at home, and I'm working two part time jobs. No benefits and I make nowhere near enough money to even think about moving out. It saddens me to think that most of 20s has been a complete and utter waste. Depresses me beyond belief.

Bout time good things come my way. Hope I'm not calling it too early, but we'll see.
Contacted a family friend who put me in touch with an owner of a production studio here in Los Angeles. Now, I have no skills or desire to be in production, and I let him know that but said I'd be willing to intern there just to get experience in writing/editing some simple commercial scripts. turns out, there was someone there who worked in advertising for years (original career when I graduated) and would take me under his wing in a way.

Fast forward a few weeks and I'm now a paid intern with an opportunity to produce a promo which may lead into the ad business. Crazy how shit works, man. I'll update this in a few weeks.

To everyone who's unemployed - shit sucks. I graduated, found nothing, and just drank the nights away. Nothing happened until I contacted a family friend to see if he knew of anything. Turns out he did, vouched for me, and I may be moving towards a dream career. In less than 2 months. Keep trying and use old hs/college connections and shit will happen. Unless you have a specific set of skills in need, the old apply/interview process is dead in this economy. Seems you need an "in" these day - find one.

Knowing people really doesn't amount to shit nowadays either. I've had people vouch for me that have worked for companies for 25 years and didn't even get a call back. Everything is a crap shoot from the moment you enter this world until the moment you leave it.

It's totally this thing, specially if you have no real experience. If you have experience, well, then you can try to find a job by yourself.

I have been looking for a job for... 6 months now? and I don't know anybody that has got a job by the traditional interview. Only vouching or intern in a shitty position as student then promoting after graduation works.

The problem is, I'm already graduated cuz I decided to go and do my final "thesis" with an Erasmus grant in Sheffield, UK (I'm from Spain). I thought it would be a good experience, appreciated by the companies, and so on. Turns out, I should have tried an internship here somewhere.

My father has tried to vouch me two times, one by the time the message was passed on they already had recruited someone (this was before I was officially graduated, I could still take an internship with an University co-agreement) , the other one, turns out they want you to do the "Final thesis" there, and I have already done it. A friend working at a good company has also tried to vouch me, but it didn't work (they are taking students with the university co-agreement thing).

I don't know what else to do, really, sent tons of e-mails, a few hand to hand CV, and nothing. A friend recommended to actually go to some companies in person and apply there, if they are not very big companies, but it stills seems to me as useless as the e-mails. Maybe two months more and I will be stressed enough to do it.

Shitty times in a shitty country :( . My only hope is some crazy connection with someone working somewhere, or an interview with a really big company. But when you know that a big company like Ford, everyone starts working vouched by someone else... shit.

Will be unemployed starting in March when I move back to the U.S. Not looking forward to unemployment, but looking forward to home very much!

Sorry to say but you are both wrong and right. ThisWreckage is right in that everything is a crapshoot. The guy above me, Valygar, is wrong in that the old interview process doesen't work. I applied to an ad on CraigsList, did the interview, and they called me back not soon after, and here I am.

Now that I'm in, I can get buddy with the people in here, and use them as connections for the future, if necessary.

Well, you are lucky. Maybe the US is different (after all, you have ONLY a 9,1% unemployment rate, here it is 20,89%) .
and-now-unemployment-is-at-208.jpg

I'm not saying the old process is "impossible", but it is way more easy to get a job with connections. Here in Spain it goes this way:

Vouching>Internship as a student>Random guy

There are not enough jobs for the 2 first types of entry, so the only way to get a job at a random interview is if nobody at the company knows somebody looking for a job (very difficult) , they don't apply to get a student and pay them shit (and it's the obvious thing to do).
The only opportunity is a big company, or have some experience already (or some BIG extra).

It CAN be illegal on the employer's part. Not yours. And if you do it and get a job from it then it doesn't matter.

Not can. It is illegal. Unless you're an intern receiving college or high school credit or volunteering temporarily as part of a charity effort, you should be paid for your labor.

It's revolting we've come to the point where people are advocating giving their time and labor away for free. Can you imagine for one second the executives of these companies going without being paid?

I understand it is rough out there. But working for free devalues your efforts, and it devalues the efforts of everyone else around you.

I wouldn't put too much stock into unemployment figures, they are always much worse than reported in the U.S due to what is considered an unemployed person

Can't find a job and you're discouraged so you give up for the time being? You're not unemployed!

I just got an offer as an investment banker yesterday. Not only is it the most money I've seen in the last 3 years, but the last 8, since I graduated.

Need to hang in there and keep trying. I think what changed my luck around was my attitude walking into the interview. I was there to connect with the people interviewing me rather than interview for a role. I think it paid off. I had to turn down 3 offers to get the one I accepted yesterday.

I wish you all nothing but the best.

Pretty impressive to move up to IB (presume it's a move up) after 8 years. I'm still to graduate but it sounds like it's extremely difficult to break in after the year after graduation. Out of interest what did you do before?

Congrats! Make the most of this opportunity.

EDIT for Job Hunt update: I had a great interview on Friday. Even had the company recruiter call me back an hour after to tell me he had discussed it with his boss, and they are submitting me for the job. But it's already Thursday and I've had no response since then. :(

I'm going to wait 'til Monday to email the guy to check my status.

Sometimes the people who need to make the final sign-off are on vacation or super busy or something, so don't be too discouraged.

I emailed him on Monday (responding to his email on Friday) and got a quick reply. The guy was cool and we talked a bit about college football during the interview.

I figure a week is about right to follow up with another email. Don't want to bug the guy. He knows I want the position.

I had a job interview last week for security work. I have my temp D license(unarmed) and I've done security work before plus the benefits are decent. We joked about me being a Texans fan living in Jacksonville and how I could better handle myself in situations like always having a resume on hand and what not..

I also got a job offer from another security place called Valor Security working down in St. Augustine for one over night shift. I gotta go down there today and fill out an application for them but I'm pretty sure I got this job.

Exactly what I did.

:( I went for a job interview today... It was like a job fair thing at Barnes and Noble... everyone else got like 10 minute interviews, the lady cut the interview off at like 4 minutes... I guess I'm just too awkward.

Was it your first interview? I know my first couple of went interviews went terribly, because I was so nervous and unprepared for them. But they get easier as you have more experience and if you prepare for the standard interview questions. Unfortunately for most positions they'll just go with the guy with the most experience, regardless of how well you come across. Anyway, just keep trying, if you can get to the interview that's an accomplishment just by itself.

Well, you're not the only one in your situation. Sometimes it feels like I'm totally alone, since most people I know around here have jobs and are out living on their own. But reading this thread makes me feel better since I know there are other people in the same situation. It sucks to feel like you've worked hard and scraped by only to realize that you've wasted years of your life doing nothing worthwhile. But you have to try to turn it around somehow, and going back to school might actually be a really good decision. You'll probably qualify for some kind of financial aid at least.

Job begins on Wednesday. Any dos and do nots that should be mentioned?

For all: keep going. Something will drop, no matter how shitty you feel.

I'm coming up on my one-year anniversary. I swear in the last year I've received only a dozen calls from jobs.

I think at this point, especially with January's end of my u/e benefits looming, the tech support industry isn't viable anymore.

I think I'm going to be stuck going to Ace Hardware or even fucking Wendy's just to keep my family afloat.

Fuck.

Hang in there, I was unemployed at one point for 20 months but then the floodgate opened. It will be much better during first quarter.

That's horrible! You were so upbeat in your accident thread, too. I hope you get a lot of money from her insurance. I can't believe an employer (yes, I can) would use this as an opportunity to fire you. What line of work were you in?

I worked for temp agencies for ~10 years. I loved it. Payed pretty well, jobs were sometimes interesting (though usually mind-numbingly boring, but never too difficult), no health insurance, though. If I liked a job, I usually had the eventual opportunity to get hired on, if I didn't they usually didn't last long or I could switch to a different assignment. I'm a stay-at-home dad/writer and I guess technically "unemployed."

I used to work in an office that overlooked one of the most beautiful buildings I'd ever seen. I really wanted to work there. I found a similar company to mine that had an open position and walked my resume over. When I walked into the office, there was a small crowd of people in the lobby. I asked if they could point me towards Human Resources. An older woman, obviously the leader of the group and probably the company, very graciously told me where to go. As I thanked her, in a horribly cruel jape from the gods, my eye had a tic/spasm and I'm sure it appeared that I winked rather lewdly at her. I turned in my resume, knowing that she probably followed me and had them toss my application in the trash.

Yep, came from Vancouver Island out to Abbotsford to try my luck for jobs here. Nothing yet, but I'm still hopefully. Applied for a couple of jobs on Thursday, so hopefully I'll hear some next week.

I just graduated from High School and have NO work experience :/ Wish I got off my ass and got a job in High School, then I would have something on my resume.

Speaking of temp agencies, I went into the most popular one here in Gainesville, Manpower, and was told that I'm "underqualified" for work I'm experienced with and at my former payscale, but "overqualified" for anything less.

They told me I should get certified to find a job in IT/tech support, but frankly money is so tight I can't afford to even get a test to improve my skills.

Also, was rejected from the local college for financial aid because back in 1998, when I was 18, I fucked off during a semester and my GPA is less than 2.0.

Best of luck, mate. I went through Manpower for the two interviews I posted about before. Both went great, but it took them a seven day delay to tell me my answers were too long even after keeping KISS in mind. McDonald's didn't think I was right for them, so I'm feeling very, very scummy right now.

Just got to wait a couple of weeks to see if stores want me for Christmas...
