anyone else unemployed?

Hey, unemployedGAF.

How long do you think I should wait before calling after sending my resume/cover letter through Craigslist? I think I found a pretty decent place to work (yes, I checked it and it isn't s scam) at that's really close.

Edit: Nevermind. Got a call back.

So the job I was excited to get, the one where it was a great job at a healthcare company and my first response from a resume since October.... they extended the offer!

However, Im nervous now. They use a company called HireRight to do apparently a full blown background check. Now, I have no criminal background, no driving record, Worked at both places I listed, BUT they just called about my job three jobs ago. I could have SWORE I started during the summer of 2004, you know, almost a damn decade ago. Even ran it by someone I used to work with and they said it sounds right.

However, they called and said the employer says that I didn't start until October 24, 2005. Well, I think I wouldve remembered as that date is around my birthday. But if they said it, then okay. I was using Christmases to judge it (they are awful). But my end date was correct, and the dates for my most recent job which I was there over 5 years was correct (which is the job that matter since it was also a healthcare company). I told the HireRight lady that if thats what they said, then sure. It was a decade ago, I knew it was either 2004 or 2005, years ago, and have nothing in my possession that has any dates what-so-ever. Reading online, the fact that this is now a blip on the background check can cost me the job offer.

I mean, seriously? If they resend this job offer over that, Ill just end everything right here and now.

Bumping to see if anyone has advice.

Their not even done with the background check, but Im halfway tempted to email the person who interviewed me and tell them that Im sorry, it was a decade ago, ran it by a former associate I worked with, have no paperwork anywhere that shows I even worked there, didnt mean to deceive or anything bad, just an honest, goodness mistake. On top of that, these are the same dates Ive used for my last two jobs when putting in resumes so Ive assumed they were right. Is this something I should send or wait?

I don't how useful this is to me but in Minnesota you get a copy of your background check and mid came back and it said they attempted to contact all three prior employers with no record of people knowing I worked there. I called HR who hired me to clarify, and she said don't worry about it, if there was any problem they would have contacted me directly to get an explanation. Oftentimes it's a formality, so don't necessarily jump the gun.

Thanks, I'll hold off and let them contact me if there is an issue. I knew I was there end of Summer-fallish, and it was 2004 or 2005, just literally had no idea which. Every other thing will turn out great, all other dates are 100% right, no criminal/driving issues, drug test will be fine, etc.

Would just be crippling at this point to not get a job because I didn't know the start date to a job I worked 8 years ago.

It is no biggie. I had a similar issue. My new employer called me and told me a had some dates wrong, but it was no issue. If you had said you worked somewhere and that turned out to be a lie, then that would be a problem. If they already extended you the offer, something as trivial as wrong dates on a resume isn't going to stop them from moving forward.

Good luck and congrats.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I sometimes do interviews at my company, and while anecdotal, I don't think anyone would freak out over you putting down a wrong start-date from a job you held a decade ago. So long as you worked there and had the position you say, it's not an issue. I wouldn't stress :)

That is assuming that there's nothing else wrong on your resume' to compound the issue, of course.

Hi guys, I'm unemployed. Recently finished my Bachelors in International Business from SDSU. I'm having trouble finding a job in my career... it's kinda sad :(.

Are you locked into starting your career in or around San Diego? International business sounds like a solid degree given the globalization of the economy, but I'd guess you might need to spread your search to various locations.

Finally found a job at Target in the backroom stocking and pulling. Feels good to work again. Hopefully my anxiety will melt away now that I'm working again.

Hey, is this where all the unemployed people hang out :p haha.

So I'm unemployed, have been for 2 - 3 years now roughly (been on benefits for about 2 and a half years which is why I'm saying 2 - 3 years) without any work experience to speak of. I'm just looking for any administrative style role. (though I am open to expanding on that - ie I've been hunting around customer service related roles as well)

My main issue is probably that I tend to apply only for jobs that are advertised online rather than sending 'speculative letters/e-mails/phone calls' (more or less what I was told at a work shop I was at the other day) so I'm changing my strategy now. I'm busy compiling a list of any businesses I can think of between here and Glasgow (roughly an hour - hour and a half away depending on transport) and hope I have better luck. (hah)

So yeah, that's my story of where I currently stand, Good luck to anyone else still hunting for a job in any case. :)

I've been unemployed for a year, and I don't know how you could have not killed yourself yet, I've been feeling the urges for a while now.

My last interview was at Waitrose, about 80 other people had applied for the position, the job went to this old fat guy that always looks like he's going to fall over. No way can he perform the tasks at a faster or high standard that me, but I guess that doesn't matter.

My problem is having no experience too. No one cares that I did well in my A Levels.

Maybe that guy had a better attitude than you.

Finally posting in this thread.

Got laid off in 2011.. used the downtime to go back to school full time to finish my degree.

Finished my degree in December, finally getting some responses back to interviews.

Ran out of unemployment benefits, and our housing assistance will be up in May, so it's pretty stressful. I've been positive throughout the whole experience, but lately it's become more difficult. My daughter told me if she did good at school her dad would get a job.

Anyways, last week I had 4 interviews for the same job over the course of two hours. It came down to me and another guy. They went with him, even though I was cheaper, etc. Kinda sucks.

I can barely get part time job offers to give me a call back. As it stands, today I applied for a temp to hire telephone tech support job through a staffing agency. Hopefully in 48 hours I'll find out if I got the position.

Anyone else in the Charlotte, NC area out there by chance? Any advice? Leads? :D

Good luck everybody!

Was a seasonal associate at Macys, got let go, got a job late fed at Hot topic and got fired in early march. Been trying to get at Dillards, and I've had a manager and 2 people put in requests for me and they have not even called me once. I've called a bazillion times and they always ask me to leave a goddamn message. )= Soo annoying.

I am sure the interview has happened already. How did it go?

Usually they ask more about your background and capabilities.

I think it went well. It was more of an open forum interview where they wanted me to ask most of the questions. Fortunately I was prepared for that. The 40 minute interview went by quickly. Surprisingly, we didn't discuss salary specifics, but they said it would be negotiated if I was offered the job. I will find out whether or not I got the job this week so...fingers crossed

Been unemployed for like 6 weeks now and Wednesday I have my first mandatory appointment with the state reemployment agency. Not sure what to expect, hopefully it'll be actually helpful instead of some miserable interviewer going through the motions due to state laws.

Has LinkedIn helped anyone here land a lob? I've never used it but I've been wondering how often it actually helps people find a job.

We use LinkedIn almost exclusively to recruit/headhunt. It's extremely popular in the corporate world, not sure about how it pans out for other job sectors.

I've now been unemployed since September and that's not a lack of trying. Im 32 and Im really fighting doing something where I'm not going to make anything. I feel at 32, by myself, if I resign myself to some job making $10 bucks an hour.... any resemblance of a career is over. But Ive been unemployed for so long now that the length is starting to hurt (or at least I feel that it is).

It just feels like to get a halfway decent job aka a job that doesn't absolutely blow and you can make AT LEAST 13-14, you HAVE to know someone. Resume/Experience/Education matters not at all. Its ALL about having someone on the inside of where you're trying to get into. And due to having a small circle of friends, my "network" is very small.

I'm currently living in Cincinnati, but have always wanted to live somewhere on North Carolina's coast, so Ive been applying for jobs in the Wilmington and surrounding areas as well. Nothing. Since Ive been unemployed, Ive had a grand total on ONE interview, which I saw highly qualified for, interview went great, and didnt get.

I feel either Im cursed, blacklisted from working ever again, etc. I wish there was a website or something where people would offer up referrals for jobs that their at, I'd pay at this point. Feels pretty hopeless.

I'm in a similar boat myself. Turned 32 back in January and left my last job last July (Gamestop SM for 5 years) due to wanting to work on my health (Bad diabetic care for 25 years) and get out of the stressful position. I moved out to ND where my wife had a job offer in September and am having a hard time finding something I can do. I had a job I tried to take 2 months ago in grocery, and after years and years of retail it turned out to be to much physical work for me to handle. Like I said my diabetes was very bad, I have improved it greatly but it has made me realize that it's harder for me to control now where it should be and I have to be slightly pickier on jobs. I have 12+ years of management and have been passed up by Best Buy TWICE in the last year for a gaming department supervisor position. It makes no sense to me. I did all of the hiring/HR with Gamestop and honestly BB is the first place I have not passed the interview with. Now days it is hard to find a retail job where I can be in customer service without it just being a crappy cashier gig. I was making $17.50 when I left my last job but damn I really couldn't take it having to go down to $10 just to get out of my apartment. It's all starting to really get to me now though. Depressed as hell, bored as hell and yet I don't have the energy to even want to get up some days. I want to get into some type of workout routine (I'm in good shape, just lazy 6'3 215lb) but I end up hurting so bad the next day and without any reason to get up I just lazy about like today :) I hope things go better for you then for me

This thread is so depressing.

I'm just off of a year anniversary of working, I went thru some serious times during unemployment.

I wish there was something I could do. I get word of jobs now and then, and I'm sure some of you guys qualify, but it's not like I have this thread open 24/7.

This thread should be a sticky, this shit is important. And if I saw the thread everyday, it would be easier for me to make mental connections.

How many years do you go back if the employment history question asks you to list your "present or most recent work experience"? 3-5 years back? Usually when I fill out an application, it asks for the past 10 years.

Since graduating last summer with a BS in Mechanical Engineering I had been looking for jobs for almost 8 moths now with no luck. Sending about 3-4 resumes per week sometimes more depending on openings for entry level positions all over the US and rarely getting a reply. I went through 4 or 5 separate interviews and if anything I believe the lack of experience really hurt my chances. I finally found a company willing to take a chance with me and pending some paperwork hopefully I'll begin in a couple of weeks.

I interview very well and have no social anxiety so the interviews go really well whenever I get the chance to speak with HR, but ultimately there are many other candidates with a couple of years of experience or an internship so they get the position.

Moral of the story, fight for an internship while you are in school.

Been out of work since August. Been without pay since the past October. My savings are gone. Had to move in my old room with my parents after 15 years of living alone. Currently sucking on the government's teat, exsanguinating my fellow taxpayers at the dizzying rate of 87.5€ per week. Becoming an electrical engineer in a country with no electronics industry to speak of was a great idea. My last work owes me almost 15000€ but they're practically bankrupt so I'm never getting my money.

Serves me right for getting an education and working almost non stop for thirteen years, the last seven constisting of 60 hour weeks without missing a single work day.

Right now I'm contemplating a life of crime.

Isn't it unusual for a job posting to ask for both a CV and resume to be submitted? I don't have a CV (they're rarely used in my field) and it's my understanding that one is essentially a more drawn-out resume.

I can't afford to pass up applying for this job since positions in baking/pastry are difficult to find in the first place, and I'm not really sure what to do here.

Welp, I didn't get the job. They went with a candidate with more experience...even though this was an entry level position. I'm convinced there are no jobs for college grads with only internship experience. Whats the point of doing internships if employers don't count it as work experience? smh.

I found a job paying 8.50 phr bullshit money but whatever it's something. What sucks most is the women working the restaurant as servers- there are no male servers-go to one of the most expensive all female colleges in the country. So it's without question to most in the area these people are well set irregardless of work yet still they get the highest paying work.

It brings me to this question, have any of you ever imagined what it would be like working a job for fun rather than being in actual need of the job?
I've been working back-breaking dish jobs my whole life that periodically I'll break down into depression over and I just can't fathom why someone would work a menial job- as servers are to a lesser extent- without any need for the money.

A CV is for people who have more academic experience than work experience.

Could you attach a portfolio to your CV?

Some people have nothing better to do with their time or see it as a form of social interaction and may prefer to do part-time work instead. I've considered it on a whim once or twice, but I've never found a major driver to follow through on it.

Thank Jesus, just accepted an offer for my dream job after being laid off for 2 months!

Congrats!

I've gotten so desperate, I recently started applying for jobs without listings. If I have a job in mind, I'll contact the company with a role for myself and skillset in mind even if they don't currently have that position. I'm 0/150 on applying for jobs with a listing, so I figure why not try a different angled approach?

Just had a phone interview with a company that I was put in contact with by a staffing agency.

It felt like it went well and at the end she mentioned that she would be in contact with my staffing agency liaison within the next couple days.

Its nervewracking as hell.

welp, i am 26 and for the first time since i was 19 i am now unemployed. i was working in retail and my hours were gradually cutting back - i was doing 35 (which i had done for ages) which eventually became 25, then 20, then 15 and so on. to make it more depressing, i just graduated with my degree in psychological science (i live in australia) last week and have to find a new place to live next week since my lease is up. i've applied for about 35 jobs over the last week (retail, office admin etc) and haven't had any calls back yet. :(

With your experience in retail, you'll definitely find somehting eventually, especially in aus. Just keep setting out at least an hour or 2 of applications a day and you'll have no trouble.
