I did too and it was awesome :p

Well I can't argue with how satisfying it was when I did accomplish it :p, was a lot of unneeded frustration in my life though lol. (Also was a total noob then too. We beat the snoll batttle with me accidentally entering the damn thing as a tank with MNK subbed on a PLD lol (it was underleveled too!) but somehow despite us losing 4-5 times before that... we ended up beating it when I made such a horrible mistake. Was an awesome feeling). Now whenever I play with my old friends and we have issues, they tell me to go hop on my STILL underleveled MNK sub as a joke.

Haha, I remember getting roped into the Promy's when I was like a lvl 34 Ranger with this group "hey we're going to do these missions, come along". Got all 3 done that night and stayed w/ most of them for the rest of the way. This was I think just after they came out too so everything was still new.

Guild Wars 2 has effectively killed any interest I had in other fantasy MMORPGs. However, I will say that screenshot is extremely hot. If the game ends up being good, I might just get into it.

Subscription fees, though. :\

I have to say I'm intrigued by 2.0. Could be amazing, could be a complete waste of time on SE's part as the damage may already be done.

Personally, I would have just killed 14 and resurrected this 2.0 version under a different name. It looks to be changed enough that it shouldn't have to carry the taint of the original.

Yeah, using a mouse in this game is laughable. It seems like everything has a massive square binding box, so you end up selecting your character instead of whatever is a centimeter over your shoulder on-screen.

The 2.0 updates sound great, but I don't think it will survive a subscription for a whole year. How many people are still gonna play when you gotta pay?

Looking at some of the other Final Fantasy Communities? Enough. They won't be making a profit but they will be at least make some of the money back. They are hedging bets on the re-release in Late 2012 and will probably make a big campaign for it starting around E3. Until then they hope the 'exclusive' content of the Seventh Umbral Era for current subscribers and simple hype for 2.0 will keep enough people around to care, even if not everyone is playing or paying at the time. And it is working on the FFXIV sites I am seeing; although there are plenty of people lukewarm at paying for a subscription fee, they also fear how many people are going to leave when that happens. The LS I am in has enough people wanting to stay for the long haul and as long as they keep content changes up leading into the 2.0. I see no reason most of them won't stick around. Really at this point it shouldn't be whether it survives, but whether you want it too. If you think the content they intend to make come a year from now is worth coming back then they are doing their job, Wada doesn't seem to care what the subscriber base looks like till 2.0, but he DOES want to get some money back for the server upgrades coming up. It is a tough gamble to survive a disaster they had, but if there is anyone can do it is them if the developers keep the attitude they got now.

I am quitting! Game is so crafting focused! Cant stand to see 80% of the ppl in servers staying at cities and crafting non stop...Everyone gone crazy with materia system now lol.

Yeah, CoP at its time of release really isn't something I'd trade for any of the more recent fixes that made it easier. It is hands down my #1 favourite gaming experience and I will never forget it.

CoP was crazy. Some good and bad memories there. Spent lots of time and gil on those missions.

I kind of miss FFXI but it really wrecked 3 years of my life.

Pic looks nice. Hopefully they can deliver and actually stick to their plan.

Then again, these are the same people who unleashed an incomplete game on us to begin with...so we'll see.

Adding subscription fees back into the mix definitely won't be popular. Haven't people been playing for free for close to a year now? (I forget when they scrapped them.)

I loved FFXI. Never used the mouse, full keyboard, perfect targeting.

I just want to catch you on this, it is not the same team. New Producer and Director completely. Its part of the reason it took so long for some of these big changes to happen. The guy basically scrapped all the old work and made a new plan to revitalize the game for the long term. He has also been the most transparent developer I have ever seen from a Japanese company, much less Square-enix, outside of a couple delays on some patches he has also followed through with everything he has mentioned coming and more :) I am not worried about him not coming through. As for free to play they never billed anyone, it was free to play from the start because the back lash was so large Wada fired/reassigned most of the top staff in the development and suspended billing before the trials canceled.

Edit: Beaten :p

Hook up a dualshock 3 and you'll see why it is so bad on keyboard/mouse. This game was very very obviously made for the controller/console.

animlboogy said:
This is painful. They have no business charging monthly for this game until 2.0 hits, and that needs a free month for old players as well.
That they are doing:
Between October and December of 2012, we plan to integrate the current service and the coming PlayStation®3 version into the all-new FINAL FANTASY XIV. At this time, a second free trial period will also be offered.

I actually just ordered a wired 360 controller to play this the other day because several people have told me the same thing.

Too bad they are charging a sub fee soon. Bad timing on my part I guess.

How FFXI does it now is perfect. Can't equip a piece till you are high enough to equip it, but you can scale it down for level capped stuff and still be useful. Your right it did suck initially though, I'm one of the few that went through CoP unnerfed in a static party ><.

You are among the privileged. You played one of the best Final Fantasy campaigns and no one else can ever play it again.

No. Fairly average for an FF title/online title.

Well instead of assuming you could read this thread and even the Official one and see that it has been improved quite a bit.

Only asking because I'm actually interested in playing it. Unfortunately SE hates giving out free trials :(. Anyone have a buddy pass they'd like to use on me?

So the bazaar system is fixed then? What has been improved since launch that made the game broken?

My question is, is it going to have that like 8 hour experience cap? if so it's going to be a complete and utter failure AGAIN.

You cannot put an experience cap on a MMORPG, it defeats the goddamn purpose of an MMORPG, to grind your way up as fast as you can, whoever thought an EXP cap was a good idea needs to be blacklisted from the gaming industry because it's quite possibly the stupidest fucking thing in the world.

They've changed the mechanics behind it. I haven't run into it as a problem recently, though maybe some other players could shed more light on their experience with it.

The armor designs in the concept art make my heart flutter, they are absolutely stunning and I am such a nerd for good looking armor designs. God knows we've not seen a lot out of an MMO lately. WoW's armor is literally some of the ugliest shit I've ever seen a game character dressed in.

Far as I know they completely removed the "8 hour XP" cap (or fatigue system) in one the past updates. The gear degradation/repair system has always been 1000x more annoying than fatigue ever was.

Fucking A! I lost it here. First reply nails it.

Seriously though, why does SE keep bothering? The game died long ago, and the problem with this new 2.0 is that it still has 14 in the title so it will naturally have the awful stigma of FF14 chained to it which it rightly deserves, because 14 was mega shit. Still is when I came back for a little dabble.

As cool as the art direction is in those screen shots, it won't fix the hollowness of what FF14 actually is. Square tossed money into a 100% failure and keeps tossing money. They should have bailed out long ago and used those funds for a new FF online project more in the veins of 11, or shit try to literally take FF11 and make a 2.0 out of that. PC/PS3 with FF14 graphics, retweak what's already in Vana'diel, add in more shit, remove bad stuff, etc. I'd pay for that in a heart beat. :)

That's not actually Kain from FFIV though. They are just using the characters' names + titles for show. lol.

Question: in the battle screenshot with all the crazy UI elements, what does CRS stand for?

After the names of Kain, Faris, Vivi, etc., we see "@FFIV", "@FFV", etc., referring to the games they were in originally.

But Romen Guildenstern is from Vagrant Story, and the game has that name both in Japan and in the West. He should be "@VS", unless there's some other game that he's in. What could "@CRS" (or maybe "@CR8") be?

I would like this game to succeed.

It's a beautiful game, and I spent 3 years on FFXI, so I like SE's MMo style. Hope the relaunch goes well :).

Lets see why FFXIV-2.0 will still be dead on arrival.
  1. It still has a "XIV" in it's tittle, and after the release of FFXIV-1.0 the number XIV has become synonymous with "Shit" in the FF universe. They could make a master game, but if they name it "Final Shit", nobody is going to buy it.

  2. It also has "Final Fantasy" on it's name.
In the past this series was a prime example of Japanese RPG's done right. Then FFX-2 came and show us how bad a shameless cash-in could look like. Then FFXII came and introduced us to a scenario about politics and a bureaucratic system. Then FFXIII came and it gave us a taste of how boring a game can be when it plays it self and offer no variation in activities other than "moving forward".
So now that the J-RPG popularity has dropped "Final Fantasy" has become the definition of "Bad"... and they are about to release "Bad Shit 2.0"...

  3. This "good edition" will be released in a year, witch is about the estimated time for the Guild Wars 2 release. They are doomed even if I don't count other lesser upcoming MMOs like "SWTOR", "TERRA" and "The Secret world"...

  4. The released game was wrong in every aspect, and it's impossible to fix everything. They can improve the graphics, add new skills, make the classes more distinct, add dungeons n stuff to do, ect... but the core mechanics are turn based similar to FFXII. You can't do much with that...

  5. In an attempt to fix it self FFXIV is doing trick that other MMO's were doing for years and now the newer ones are trying to get rid-off.
    • Other MMO's are trying to create dynamic action combat, but FFXIV has that stupid semi turn-based combat, that is completely unfit for PVP or any quest other that Kill quests...
    • Other MMO's are trying to get rid of the "auto attack" but FFXIV has just implemented it.
    • Other MMO's are getting dungeons to the next level (dynamic changes and different versions) but FFXIV only just added them.
    • Other MMO's have been working around separating players into factions, but FFXIV has just implemented it (and with a poor excuse story-wise I might say...)
Long story short... Don't expect much originality.

  6. Subscription to return in a month...REALLY?!
They just announced that the game will be in a complete state in more than a year, and they will resume subscriptions a year earlier? Lets say that a person who now plays the game bought it for 40$ (nobody bought it after lunch), and lets say the subscription will be 10$ a month. By the time the game will be considered complete, the jerks who are currently playing will have spend on it about 160$ if not more. ...and did I mention that Guild Wars 2 won't have a subscription?

They have manage to impress me with their persistence to fix it, but not with the game it self... yet.

HOLD THE PHONE. You think GW2 is more popular than SWTOR? Major laughs.

Anyways, I don't even hate FF14 in its current form. I had a pretty good time playing with a friend. It was a disaster day 1 though but I'm cautiously optimistic for 2.0

well when it's done I hope some GAFers I trust re-review it so I can see if it's worth getting into :p

I hate MMOs and their design(and the mindset they cater to) with a passion with Guild Wars series and Final Fantasy series being the exception. I've always wondered if I should bother reviewing these games because I would be looking at them like a really obtuse normal game and ignore the rest of shitty subgenre.

Also I love the irony of NIS fans criticizing SE games.

If Guild Wars 2 had a subscription fee the chances of me playing FFXIV for more than a span of a few months every year would be very unlikely. So Guild Wars 2's smart decision balances out FFXIV's bad one.

You hold the phone HAN SOLO. GW1 had 7 million accounts afew years ago, so i'd imagine its over 10million by now or close to it. Logic says GW2 would do similar or better numbers. Can SWTOR do similar numbers, especially being a P2P MMO? i think not.

I beta-played SWTOR from a friends house and we both came to the same conclusion.
It's nothing special...
The graphics are bad, and the best ideas the game has (like the lots of story-dialogs, and the crew on your ship-base) are more fit for a single player game.

The game is mostly hyped because of the names "Star Wars" and "Bioware", and some good CG trailers.

Make your self a favor and watch a walktrough of Guild Wars 2.
Here is an early one from GC2010.
It's old (there are much more stuff revealed now) but it gets the job done to explain the game.

Take also another video to complete the hype.

Actually I believe GW2 will do at least X2 better than GW1 because it plays and looks like a game that got everything right, including innovation.

But as you can see for your self in GREEDO KILLER's post, he makes my argument valid. The names ARE important in MMO's to hype fan-bots. You can see how blindly he worships a game that has yet to show something interesting as an MMO, just because it has the names "Star Wars" and "Bioware", and how quickly he dismisses an obviously better one, that he most likely hasn't even bother to research.
I could make a study around him. :p

SE lost their good name around the Final Fantasy brand, as they mentioned them selfs, and only a few loyal fan-bots remained.

That's why SE has to do a little more to impress us now...

I'm happy you speak for the great majority. Nope, not some internet minority. Oh and fan-bots, what cheerfully negative name. Yes I really will have to take you seriously. And I like how there's apparently few of us. Do tell how you measured this one? What poll did you take?

Well...
I was for once an FF believer!...
And so was 3 of my friends.

Now after the mediocre FF12 and the horrible FFXIII & XIV, none of us care about this series anymore.

We DONT want SE to remake FF7 because at this point we are sure they are going to waste it.
