The 2nd-tier shelf of fall 3DS software - What's the Verdict ?

I'm picking up Shinobi and Lautrec. I might pick up Centipede Infestation when it drops to bargain price. For some reason I want to own all these updated classic titles like pac-man/galaga and Frogger 3D, etc.

Probably going to pick up Nano Assault relatively soon. Shinobi and Sonic I might get after a price drop.

Is Cave Story 3D already considered rare? I'm seeing it it's gone on eBay for $45, and much more outside of the US. I really wanted to wait to get that one cheap as well, but it seems just like with Bit.Trip Saga and Devil Survivor: Overlocked, I'm going to have to get it soon if I'm going to get it at all.

Like the Wii version of some stupid tacked on crap?
Be honest you never played the Playmaker titles on Wii right ? And no there is nothing "tacked" on .....

I picked up Ace Combat today. I'm only a few missions in, but if you like classic Ace Combat, it seems like a much better game than Assault Horizon. Right from the beginning you get the awesome music, a cheesy story where you face down rival ace squadrons, and other things that make Ace Combat what it should be.

- It has 'maneuvers', but they aren't nearly as intrusive or shitty as in Assault Horizon. If you played Sky Crawlers on the Wii, you know how the offensive maneuvers work (only there are only two stages instead of three, and your lock-on is less effective and shorter in duration, since Ace Combat has missiles). If not, the short version is: As you fly close to a target that you've locked on to, a gauge charges up. When it charges up, either to the halfway point or to full, you can hit a button to enter a small animation that ends up with you behind the target, putting you in a better position to fire at them. So far, though, it's not like Assault Horizon, where you almost need to use it in order to hit any enemy stronger than a fodder pilot. You can play without it, and it's like any other Ace Combat game.
The defensive maneuvers are fairly simple: When a missile gets close enough to you, part of your HUD turns yellow, indicating whether you need to roll left or right. If you pull the analog pad to the proper direction and hit the maneuver button, you dodge the missile. There seem to be two variants: One where you just do a quick roll that lets the missile pass you by (the camera never changes and you otherwise don't change course or direction), and one where you actually end up behind the enemy and are more easily able to move into position for a counter-attack. I'm not sure what triggers which version.

- There are branching missions, although I'm not sure yet how extensive the branching is, or if you eventually need to complete them all.

- The plane customization is reasonably fleshed out, and not unfamiliar to anyone who's played earlier Ace Combat games. You buy planes and upgrades with Credits that you earn during missions; there are new planes to buy, each plane comes with one Special Weapon and can unlock two others, plus you can unlock upgrades to your Engine, Wings, Cockpit, and Armor, along with different paint schemes.

- Edge can be your wingman. (Also "Slash". Supposedly it's a remake of Ace Combat 2, but I don't remember anything about AC2 so I can't say how much of the mission or story content is actually different.)

So far, it's doing a pretty good job of washing the bad taste of Assault Horizon out of my mouth. It seems like it's going to at least be an 'average' Ace Combat game, which makes it 'pretty damn awesome' in the grand scale of things.

That was another reason I picked it up, I already own Bit.Trip and DS and I like the idea of having a collection of the system's critically acclaimed low-print-run games.

You should do an official thread if there isn't one :)

Fake Ace Combat World.
Edit: Just noticed you said close visually. They're not. Watch the video on the eShop. Looks better than the PS2 Ace Combats.

Dr. Lautrec
Nano Assault
Ace Combat
Cave Story (when it's $20)
Maybe Shinobi?

You can tell? E shop videos are always pretty compressed. But the psp titles weren't bad looking. Easily some of the best visuals for the device imo besides the forgivable lower res ground textures.

I'm very interested in seeing how Sonic Generations turns out (I liked Sonic Rush, but I never played the other DS games) but the fact that we haven't seen much of it lately doesn't bode well for it.

I got Harvest Moon The Tale of Two Towns and already logged in almost 40 hours.
And I'm still in Autumn of Year 1...

It's currently on hold until I'm done with Super Mario 3D Land and some of the other Fall rush.

Ace Combat will support the Circle Pad Pro when that comes out, if that means anything to anyone.

what was the 'right stick' used for in ace combat games, camera?

I remember psp ace combats, camera was just L+R+ nub direction. Not much of a game changer.

Need to get around Ace Combat. I can live with Sky Crawlers-esq combat, since manuvers are more or less substitutes for missiles. I want to see how it pans out WITH missiles along too.

But damn I need to finish Cave Story 3D and Mario 3D first!

Ace Combat is pretty good.
Cool! I've really loved arcade-y flight combat games since my childhood addictions of Star Fox and Rouge Squadron, and while I've never played an AC it looked like something I'd probably like in the videos I've seen. The only thing that seemed off to me was that it seemed like the plane you're controlling was really big, like it took up a huge portion of the screen, seemingly blocking your view. Might have just been the video I saw though.

Anyway, I'm curious to see more impressions, but I have a feeling this is going to be on my "Watch out for holiday/ post-holiday sales" list.

How can third parties to utterly have failed to produce one single must buy game for a handheld heir to the DS legacy 9 months after its launch.

I mean seriously. The 3DS drought this late in is mind boggling. Nintendo sure is to blame but what about everyone else?

I can barely manage to overcome my laziness enough to play the game, let alone make threads about it. Someone should, though; it's probably going to massively fly under the radar, between coming out two days after Mario and the shitty name that makes it sound like an Assault Horizon spinoff, and it doesn't deserve that.

The game has the option to play from third-person view, cockpit view, or HUD view (basically cockpit view minus the, uh, cockpit, so the entire screen is gameplay space with a HUD laid over top of it.

Funny thing, Nintendo mentioned before that they 'held back' to give 3rd parties a chance. Apparently that back fired on them...

I plan on picking up for DS/3DS in the near future

Cave Story 3D
Nano Assault (if there is an AU release in the near future)
Star Fox
Super Mario Land
Mario Kart
Kirby Mass Attack
Layton 4

Maybe Ace Combat pending reviews or a soccer game (Fifa).

Skip Kirby Mass Attack and get Canvas Curse & Super Star Ultra. Mass Attack could be any game with just Kirby characters slapped over it...worst game in my opinion.

I think Nano Assault will probably be released in Australia ;o

OMG...I need to play this. I wish I wasn't so broke right now. I picked up Assault Horizon, and while I enjoyed, it was missing that AC spark and soul. This game sounds like it's back to form. Thanks for the impressions!

But yeah, besides mainline Nintendo stuff (Luigi's Mansion 2, Paper Mario, Kid Icarus) I would pick up the following if I had some more cash:

Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy
Shinobi
Dr Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights

Maybe there's none for you, but I've played a ton of Devil Survivor, Bit.Trip, and Ghost Recon, which was as surprisingly good Advance Wars style game. And it's really divisive but Mercenaries is one of my favorite arcadey score attack games ever and the 3DS version looks pretty good and controls great. Tetris was a pretty awesome pickup too with the $10 gift card offered at Target when it first came out.

If you're going to wait for one title that justifies a $250/ $170 purchase in your eyes then yeah, you might be waiting awhile, but it's ridiculous to say there's no good third party support.

I'll be getting none of those. MK definitely, but I really want some good quality native 3ds download titles.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS MAN!

Get Mass Attack ASAP!

Anyway, I'd say that the only 3rd party game worth mentioning out of those ones is Nano Assault (and lo and behold! It doesn't have an EU release date yet)

The first real "must have" 3rd Party game will be Resident Evil Revelations.

I played the demo of Sonic Generations at PAX this year. I didn't enjoy it all that much though. I thought it controlled really weird. Looked alright though.

I pretty much agree with you. Everyone does have their own tastes of course but for me, apart from Ghost Recon which I really enjoyed, the only other 3ds game I'll be playing anytime soon is MK and maybe SML as a loaner from a friend. RE looks good so I might get that too but thes really very, little on the way of console type experiences on it, which is what I want to see more of. 5 minute pick up and plays are OK but I'm not paying retail for those.

So 3DS-gaf, what title are you planning to pick up this fall other than Mario/Kart?

Tales of the Abyss day one with Shinobi and Sonic later. I'll also get Cooking Mama 4 at some point but probably not until it's quite cheap.

I looked quickly for Cave Story on my DSi XL yesterday and couldn't find it. Did it not come out on the Euro store?

Aside from Mario combo and RE:R, Nano Assault is the most likely purchase for me...
at least when it is available in Europe.

Yeah, I got Harvest Moon as well and love the look and think the 3D is pretty great.

Reminder than Cave Story 3D, Shinobi and CRUSH3D were all pushed back because publishers through releasing during the holiday season (or post-holiday season in the case of CRUSH3D) would lead to bigger sales than if they released pre-October when there was literally nothing else in the pipeline. Go figure.

I'm not made of money. I'll check out some titles when the January sales are on. Still have a few Wii and DS games I'm interested in.

I never understood why they pushed back Cave Story 3D & Shinobi to be right next to Mario 3D Land. Most people would've been more likely to buy them in September when there wasn't as much to buy on every other system too.

The rationale was that they'd get more sales if they waited until later in the year for hardware sales to pick up. Maybe it'll actually work, what do I know.

More people would be buying 3DS's to play Mario, so a greater customer base. My problem is all the non-3DS games that are coming out - I really want Shinobi and Mario, but between Zelda, Skyrim, and Rift (my MMO), all my gaming time is gone.

I will be picking up Tales of the Abyss, Sonic and Ace combat at a later date, most likely in the new year, some of this soft ware really needed to come out at an earlier time.

How come none of the Australian retailers are listing tales of the abyss for pre-order on their sites?
Is it just because they're shit?

so wait. this is it? I thought 3DS would be getting more and more games. so this and the launch titles is all that's out? jesus!
