The opening circus-themed performance on tonight's results show is seriously one of the worst things I've ever seen on TV.

Agreed. It was loud, over-produced and yet strangely very amateur. During the segment where they were sitting at the round table my roommates and I were wondering why on earth the choreographers would have the contestants spend so much time not facing the audience/camera. It also didn't help that the contestants were dressed so similarly to the dancers, and combined that with the big lights washing everything out half the time I couldn't tell if I was looking at a contestant or a backup dancer.

The production seriously needs to be fired after this season. This show was supposed to be a big reality tv event of the season and yet its not pulling off the production qualitie of shows like The Voice that had maybe half the budget to work with. Every time that stage lights up I see the result of an insanely large budget and no direction.

Yep.

Thankfully.

Really? Two double eliminations in a row? That couldn't have possibly been the original plan. Why are they rushing the finale of this thing? Are the ratings that bad?

Since there is going to be a second season, they really need to get rid of the groups category, and most importantly fire Steve and bring a host that has at least one ounce of charisma.

Actually it all makes sense.

We have all known the X-Factors last episode is in late December as Idol takes over in the beginning of January.

If they don't do Double Elimination then they won't finish in time. Also ratings have stayed pretty steady since the shows debut

I agree and disagree about groups.

On one hand, it was a completely wasted category this season. Groups have been dead in the US for years now, and part of the reason why is that we were so oversaturated with cookie-cutter groups we've been desensitized to manufactured groups of solo artists with no chemistry. It also doesn't help that too many producers these days treat groups like they're all solo artists being featured on the same song. The days of harmonizing, blending, and specialized vocal parts are gone. Now it's just "Ok you sing this line, then you sing this line, then you sing that line, and all in the same range and tone so that consumers can't tell you apart." Basically, they're not demonstrating what makes groups unique.

That won't fly in the US. Basically, the manufactured group model from the late 90s is dead. Dead dead dead.

But there's still hope for The Group. Look at shows like The Sing Off. All groups trained to sing together. Mixed vocals, harmonies, blending, unique arrangements. Basically singing songs in a way that solo artists never could. Damn, even the worst groups from this season of The Sing Off were leagues better than the best groups we saw on X Factor.

Shit, can you imagine this group performing this song on X Factor with an actual band backing them up? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNUDm_qkpjQ

My god - they'd be top contenders.

If they REALLY want to do groups on X Factor, they need to give us some real groups, and stop trying to make NSync/Spice Girls happen again. Because we're done with that.

I actually liked what the Stereo Hogzz were doing when they really put effort into the vocals, which was letting the main guy (who could sing his ass off, but rarely did) do his shit while they did the backups.

The double elims are because they're already going to finish a week prior to Christmas. I don't really know why they didn't just start earlier, but that might be due to trying to not waylay the consumer by starting the show before people are aware of it. The ratings are quite decent actually, what they've done that's good is that they aren't bleeding viewers like most shows. The big "problem" at first was that X-Factor was competing against Modern Family and such's season debuts. Idol never competes against anything at all because Idol premieres in early January and competing shows are both 1) mid-season, and 2) not actually on the air until early February sweeps start.

The problem is baseball. Because they can't get their live shows firmly scheduled until it's over, they end up having to drag out the audition episodes and then fast-forward through the live shows. It's really awkward, and I hope they figure out a better solution for this next season. The audition episodes for this show really aren't anything special, and they'd be better off trying to focus more on what DOES work better in this format (Boot Camp, Judge's Houses, Live Shows.)

A better solution is to cancel Idol or reverse them.

I don't think Idol itself really is a bigger draw than X-Factor, it's just a matter of timing.

I'm kinda glad the show is not getting spectacular ratings, everything about it is already so breathtakingly arrogant I can't even imagine how much worse it would be if it was backed up by huge ratings.

I still think it's a massive mistake to run X-Factor and Idol practically back-to-back year-round. In the UK XF replaced Idol but here FOX wants to have their cake and eat it. I think it is going to backfire, just like when ABC got greedy with Millionaire and overexposed it.

Ugh, sad to see LeRoy go, wish it was the brat instead.

You know the worst thing about this week's theme, is that whoever goes home will associate this failure with "the thing that inspired him or her the most."

Imagine if Marcus went home because of his serenade. lol.

I think Idol is going to see a pretty big fall off this year that they aren't expecting. I think the show type in general is experiencing a big decline.

The first shows will always have big rating because of the timing, but I think overall the ratings won't really compete.

Lol. Say that to Ratings.

Idol draws 2x the ratings still. Even with timing I bet idol will draw more due to its brand name. People know it more.
I'm just saying, I have a feeling. Check back during Idol and tell me the ratings are the same. I think you'll see consistent ratings overall with X-Factor due to people realizing the format is getting stale.

Just shows how they rebounded nicely for AI10.

X-Factor pulled 9 million on Tuesday :(

It's common for a show to drop when there's a shift in the schedule. I remember during Idol's season 5 when they were pulling 30 million a week, then it suddenly dropped to 22 million because of a last minute time shift.

come into this thread to see if everyone still hates Astro.

Some dude transcribed his performance has listened to it 30 times, and claims its the best hip hop he's heard in however many years.

/Tabris.

This is Josh's / Melanie's to lose, Josh should be able to pull it out imo, while Melanie has the most technically sound voice, Josh's is just such a pleasure to listen to and has such a sincerity to it.

So I read that they're gonna swap Nicole and Kelly (XF UK). I boo at these half measures, just put Mariah on that judges' table fer chrissakes...

Josh: C+

From what I could decipher, he was just average. He definitely got lost in the "spectacle" (as Simon suggested) and was drowned out by the loud music.

Astro: A+

BEASTLY LYRICS. Took "Black Or White" and turned it into a RAP. WHAT????? OMG. He epitomizes "making it your own"

Astro was great tonight. First time I've enjoyed him. And seeing that hair/make-up crew scrambling around Drew right now, he must make their jobs really easy :-p
