the
red wedding
is going to be the most hilarious television reaction of all time. This Ned shit is going to be like pie compared to that.

Well I think a lot of people will have read the books or have it spoiled to them by the time that actually shows up on tv. Who knows though, maybe the show will keep adding new viewers so we can still get a lot of fresh reactions.

i know many many people who say they're going to stay pure to the tv show until it's finished and THEN read the book. it's going to be comedy gold

Guys, I have an idea about how to handle the
red wedding
for non readers:

1st step: We pretend that the
wedding we are referencing is Joffrey's, which admittedly, contains a major pivotal point of the story and has a major death, hence the name, "red wedding"

2nd step: Wait for the real
red wedding
to happen.

3rd step: PROBLEM?

I have kept myself pure by not reading the books.

And I intend to keep it that way for as long as the HBO is ongoing.

If it ends before covering all the books, I'll read the damn things.

When I read this part of the book, I didn't really get all excitedly shocked. However, afterwards, my expression afterwards was essentially:
team_fortress_wtf.jpg

my reaction, and this is literally the only time this has ever happened to me while reading (or watching tv or games for that matter), was me immediately putting the book down in shock, standing up and going outside to smoke a joint. I just needed the fresh air.

Season 3/Book 3 speculation

When do they cut the third season? The red wedding is like 2/3 through the book if I recall correctly and that would be the most badass cliffhanger ever, but at the same time, I'm curious if people would be pissed and not come back the following year.

Fairly certain they will end s3 with the Red Wedding and Ygritte's Death. I believe the actress that plays her was only contracted for 2 years. But next year might only count as 1 season contractually anyway since they are filming two at once. I dunno. But even so, it's a good ending point and lines up nicely with the Red Wedding.

I can see them also ending with Joffrey's Death too, but they could also do that early in S4. They could do that 1 or 2 episodes into Season 4 or drag that out to ep4 or 5. But I think it would work better to do Red Wedding and Ygritte dying in s3ep9 and then Joffrey in s3e10.

The only problem with that then is that they would have to draw out the events in the last 2/3 of SoS a bit longer then they would need to be. Either way I think S4 will look something like this.

Episode 6 or 7 - The Mountain vs Red Viper Duel
Episode 9 - Tyrion vs Tywin
Episide 10 - Littlefinger vs Lysa

I also think it would be pretty awesome to do the SoS Epilogue as the last scene in S4 and reveal Lady Stoneheart to the audience for the first time. That would be a good wtf moment for non book readers so long as her resurrection is never mentioned before that.

That was me pretty much after the first season and then I finished the first book and caved in and went to the others. If the season ends with that cliffhanger it would be so fucked up. It would have driven me nuts. Regarding that scene:
I would like to see them keep it graphic. That whole scene especially with what happened to Greywind is so fucked up.

Damn just thinking about it gets me pissed off all over again.

Grrrrrrrrr....

Still gets me raging and calling for Frey heads to roll just thinking about it. You got me good, Martin, you got me good

Yea that part was just shocking. I had an idea something big was going to happen, but nothing could have prepared me for that.

Regrettably:

I had it spoiled for me that Robb would die in Book 3, with no other details than that he died. I also knew the term "Red Wedding" with a bad vibe, so when the wedding came up in the book I was extremely uneasy through, and expecting something bad to happen. However, I most certainly didn't expect...that.

I was thinking he could be poisoned or something. I was not remotely expecting the massacre I got.

Awesomely, this was influenced by a real historical event.
Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York... during the War of the Roses was decapitated and his head mounted on a pike, and they put a paper crown upon his head to mock his claim.

God history is amazing.

Anybody interested in Game of Thrones and the historical contexts for the story, I recommend you check out The Sunne in Splendour:

I was pleasantly surprised with how good this book was in terms of historical fiction and it does provide a great backdrop for the inspiration for a lot of the story.

Same! Book 3
I thought hte red wedding was jofferys wedding, the big 'wedding' the book has been inching towards. It was only when I looked at the table of contents that I noticed that Cat and Arya had 4/5 chapters back to back then....no more Cat chapters and I got really worried.

It wasn't until after reading that section on the magnitude of that scene. Cat freaking out and going all crazy at the end was perfect

As long as they include the line about the ghost of a direwolf roaming the hall of the capital the night that Joffrey is poisoned, as if it was revenge against the Lannisters. That was so awesome.

As I've said before, I think that if possible, everything starting with the Red Wedding through the rest of ASOS should be in the same TV season. Ending a season with the Red Wedding would be rage inducing beyond measure.

So happens for the first six episodes in season four? If ASOS is two full seasons, and not a season and a half like a few people here outlined, I don't really see how you put the red wedding in season three without significantly reworking the order of some events in the book. The red wedding takes place about two-thirds of the way through ASOS.

The two
weddings
take place relatively close together, you couldn't have them a season apart.

I've almost finished book 3 part 2 and...
The Red Wedding.....
I honestly yelled FUCK OFF YOU CUNTS at 3 in the morning. I had never ever done that with a book ever.
A Song of Ice and Fire ladies and gents.... Fuck those fucking Freys!

Question regarding book 4/5 without spoiling but I just ordered them and they have both had very mixed reviews on the amazon site :/ what's that about? Without spoiling.. If possible?

I'd imagine that 5 years between each book created some false expectations. I'm 1/3 through 4 and I like it.

So I'm still on the 2nd book. Is it odd that I haven't been motivated to continue in the past couple of days because I'm too pissed at a particular character,
Theon Greyjoy

Someone please tell me he gets some comeuppance before the end of the book

The books slow down in plot progression and the 5+ year wait between each is not a good combo.

AFFC is good but don't expect anything happening on the level of the third book. ADWD has some structural problems but it's essentially AFFC part 2.

Ah makes sense I guess..

Yeah the plot does seem to plow through really quickly in book 3.

Can't put it down!

Should be fine to read the next two in that case since I'll be reading then straight after this..

So I'm about to start AFFC soon. I'm kind of dreading it, because most people here on GAF say that AFFC and ADWD are the two worst books in the series and meander on and on. And I already had those moments in the last two books :/

(don't get me wrong, ASOS is great, but there are certain POV chapters I can't get myself to care about: Davos and Bran stick out particularly).

It is kind of sad that the (book 3 and forward)
red wedding is the last major WTF!!!! moment in the series for me. I can't remember anything like that in the next two books that made me put the book down and just say WTF to myself. GRRM needs to do something similar again!

I thought ADWD was full of those moments.. but maybe after the red wedding nothing in the series is shocking.

AFFC and ADWD are way better than GAF gives them credit. They have his best prose in the series so far.

Book 3 spoilers :

I really hope they find a way to emulate the book's structure regarding the red wedding. In the books, the way the Cat/Arya chapters were alternating without any other characters in between made it seem like they were about to be reunited which made what happen next all the more heartbreaking.

The third book reaches a climax for the "first arc" of the series, so AFFC starts a new one after it and as such, the pace comes right back down to Book 1 levels. AFFC is not bad at all, but it is very slow and plodding at times and not every viewpoint's story is that interesting/eventful.

I'm only about 8/9 chapters into ADWD, so far a fair bit more is happening, or it might be that some of my favourite characters are back in the viewpoints, but so far I'm liking it more than AFFC.

I think Book 4/5, since it's really one massive book split in two, will seem much better once Book 6 and 7 are out (or if, should I say?). They start a second arc for the series which will presumably climax in Book 7 and tie them together.

As more mixed reviews, impossible expectations after many years of waiting are the main cause. It also seems some fans are expecting four more SOS in terms of pacing and series changing events for rest of the series, which was simply ridiculous. Like I said, SOS is a the climax of the arc of the first three books.

I agree, AFFC was amazing. Haven't read ADWD yet.

I can understand that some might be disappointed after waiting 5+ years for AFFC (or ADWD) but i first started reading the books after watching GoT and reading the books 2-4 in short succession just felt right with absolutely no noticeable drop off between them. (Minor AFFC story structure / content spoiler)
tbh I appreciated the change of pace compared to ASOS and the more political / character driven nature of AFFC
. If AFFC would have been just a little bit longer i would rank it right besides ASOS in terms of story / significance but it is nevertheless probably the book that i enjoyed reading the most.

Not sure when i should begin reading ADWD though. I have the book lying here (ADWD / AFFC story structure spoiler)
but was too disappointed that the first half runs parallel to AFFC to read it right after AFFC
.

I totally agree but we are pretty much the only two on Gaf. People seriously have ridiculous expectations and also get royally butthurt when things don't progress the way they think they should. ASOS had the best plot points by far and the last two had far better writing. TWOW is clearly going to be the best of both worlds and I'm fucking psyched.

If you do end up reading the books because of a cancelation, do yourself a favor and just start from Book 1. There are several characters not in the show as well as many mysteries the show doesn't cover. The reflections and flashbacks by Ned in the first book alone are almost worth a read even at this point.

As someone that also read all 5 books back to back as a first time reader, I also agree. I breezed through them all so fast. If anything, my only issue was the timeline of ADWD.

I'll say this, being mad or content about the fate of a certain character isn't a good reason to stop reading. The story is going to work itself out in interesting ways.

my reaction, and this is literally the only time this has ever happened to me while reading (or watching tv or games for that matter), was me immediately putting the book down in shock, standing up and going outside to smoke a joint. I just needed the fresh air.

I totally get you.

I had an actual, physical reaction. I felt blood rushing to my face and kept reading the same page and not believing. I had to stop reading at that point and only resumed the following day.

Never happened to me with any form of fiction/entertainment.

Season 4 will be a mix of the last 1/3 of ASoS and the first 1/3 of AFfC and ADwD. The first half of AFfC and ADwD are so slow they cannot hold up a season by themselves, so a full two seasons for ASoS will not work.

Is it possible that this show could make it all the way to the end when even George hasn't made it to the end yet? series spoiler:
Wont the child actors age as the show keeps going?

So after the insanity that is the last third of ASOS, the last third of the forth season will just become extremely slow because most of the plotlines reached a conclusion in the middle of the season?

I don't really see how you don't line up the last third of ASOS with the last halfish of a tv season.
