Batman: Arkham City PC release date now Nov 18 - Steam version uses Steamworks

- How do I disable the button prompts and tipps on screen? I did the "No Hints" in the options and in the combat and gadget menu I think I dissabled tutorial for all attacks. Yet, I still get them the whole time.

I don't think there's a way to disable the on-screen prompts. Feeling pretty stupid being told to press X to glide takedown, RT to hang and such the entire game, yea I get it. Really clutters up the screen. Also, that radio frequency thingy is pretty intrusive as is the neon green "level up" indicator.

You can disable the HUD by inserting the ToggleHUD function in the BMinput.ini files.

Ah thanks!

On another unrelated note:
I am totally confused about all those riddler challanges.
In Arkham Asylum you can find a map with all the riddler trophies and challanges. So you can go and complete them later on while still knowing approximately where to search.
In Arkham City I found out that you have to
interrogate the Riddler henchman
in order to get some info on the map. However having just done that in the museum I still found some trophies that were not on my map yet. What about that? Is there another way to get that info?

Just keep interrogating the riddlers henchman...they dont always reveal trophies in the area they are found in, so someone in Park Row might reveal trophies in Amusement Mile, etc..

Once all trophies are displayed though you wont see any more of riddlers henchmen.

cannot figure out how to go back and change resolution/ direct x version so the game runs proper.(seriously, frame drops on an i5 580sli setup?)..I downloaded on origin-cannot find the settings launcher anywhere

help?

Similar issue, except a purple line on the right side. I bumped down the resolution from my laptop's native of 1366x768 to just 1280x720 and it went away. Pretty odd issue and not sure if there's a better workaround.

Switching to a 16:9 resolution (1600x900) just makes the game crash after the 'Press Start' screen. =/

EDIT: Weird thing. I just put the settings back to 1680x1050 and the yellow wasn't there any more. Very weird.

Thanks, yea I've been using it intermittently since you originally posted it back on page 23. It's unfortunate that disabling the HUD disables everything though. Actually, all I'd really like to have on-screen is the grapple point/indicator. With the HUD disabled, it's hard to tell where your grapple is gonna end up on account of the fact that it's auto-targeting/has a mind of its own. Anyway, I'm gonna make an effort to play this way. Should make it a bit more challenging too.

Still can't understand why some devs feel the need to hand-hold us all the time. At least give us options.

You're completely correct. Do you know if the handholding is even the in hard mode or new game+?

So, I noticed the game crashes if GFWL does not log in time, which it did and after that my save game mysterously disappeared.

I'm back to 0% progress, wtf man

My current mission was
rescuing Victor Fries' waifu and I just apprehended Zsaz

I played through on Hard Mode and it is definitely there. I'm in the end game now just finishing off some side missions and it still tells me RB to grapple or RT to dive bomb. Really annoying.

It appears that a few people are having issues capping framerates, if so try placing these lines in your UserEngine.ini:

[Engine.GameEngine]
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=22
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62

**These are the defaults so change them to suit your needs.

Tried playing around with these shadow settings as well:

MaxShadowResolution
bEnableVSMShadows
bEnableBranchingPCFShadows
bAllowHardwareShadowFiltering
bAllowBetterModulatedShadows
ShadowFilterRadius
bEnableForegroundShadowsOnWorld
bEnableForegroundSelfShadowing
bAllowWholeSceneDominantShadows

After some testing, I kept only:

MaxShadowResolution=2048
bEnableVSMShadows=True
bEnableBranchingPCFShadows=True
ShadowFilterRadius=3.000000

These appear to give slightly more accurate shadows and the latter setting makes them a bit softer. This also seems to reduce the crosshatch/dithering effect that appear in some instances. The other settings didn't seem to do anything I could see and bAllowBetterModulatedShadows seemed to cause some minor flickering on self-shadows. Turned AO back on in the menu again as it seems to play better with these settings. Anyway, don't expect huge visual differences or anything, this isn't CryEngine here.

=/ My problems back again. It's really distracting and I don't know why it's there most of the time but wasn't that one time I tried the game earlier.

i had it crash on me a couple times. then i started making sure that the game was signed into my XBL account and as long as i wait for it to finish signing in then it hasn't crashed since

I just canceled and went back in and my saves came back.

Fuck that boring last boss and ending though...

Rocksteady can't do endings and bosses but everything else is so gud.

Well my nearly complete game save file disappeared, it's not in save data folder for Arkham City and now because I exited out Steam Cloud is showing 0 bytes saved. Fuck you WB and fuck you Games for Windows Live.

Goto the game install folder, find the binaries directory and drill down until you get to the files themselves. Running the bmlauncher.exe app will open the initial launch menu where you can get at the options screen.

Try logging out and back into the game again (Assuming you haven't already restarted the game). If that doesn't work, try opening up the properties menu for the folder the save game was in and selecting previous versions. You may be able to recover the last good snapshot for the folder and recover the file that way.

Does the steam version save someplace besides Documents -> WB Games -> Batman Arkham City -> Save Data? Every single previous version I look at of that file is empty.

No idea - I'm rocking the GMG version personally. I doubt it though. Some folks have reported that their saves were fine, but that this directory was empty, so its possible GFWL stores your game on their servers as well. Or presumably it would with an online profile. I'm not really sure how it works truth be told.

Do you use an off-line profile for GFWL? Also, I'm assuming there was an alphanumeric subdirectory under the save data directory and you checked there too? That's where my save file is actually located.

Yeah I use a normal Xbox Live profile. I turned on display hidden files and folders and the save folder is completely empty, no sub folders or anything, including on all previous saved version.

I know my steam cloud did show some data being used before (less then 1MB) but now it's at 0. As far as I know there is no way to get an old version of my steam cloud save.

I remembered I had backed up my save a day or two ago with GamesaveManager and tried to restore it, got the same thing, the save folder was empty and no saves. Looks like I have no choice but to start over.

Edit: Looks like i may of found a save file from earlier today in userdata file in the steam folder, I looked under Arkham City's App number (57400) and found what looks like an old saved file from earlier today. I will try restoring it after dinner tonight.

Probably a dumb question, but how do I start the Arkham City options launcher through Origin? Can't seem to find it.

Cool beans - so it looks like the Steam version either stores its files in a different location, or that's the Steam cloud backup version. Either way, I hope it gets you back on your feet.

EDIT: Just realized that you'll probably need the subdirectory under SaveData to be created first (Assuming you have only the .sgd savefile file in your Steam folder). So you may have to start a new game first, exit out once that is done and then put the .sgd file in what will hopefully be the recreated alphanumeric SaveData subdirectory.

Find the WB Games folder and look for the Batman folder. The launcher should be in there.

If you are looking to backup save data for the steam version look in "\Steam\userdata\(sequence of numbers)\57400\remote\(profilename).sgd"

Yeah I have my .sgd file from earlier today. I've put it in the remote folder and it doesn't load the file. I've put it in the saved games folder and it doesn't load the file.

I created a new game and saved it, did a search on my hard drive for .sgd files and couldn't find the new save, just the old save I now have on my desktop and my old Arkham Asylum save. I can't seem to find where this game saves to. The Arkham City SaveGame directory is still empty for me even after I create a new save.

The biggest complaint about Arkham City is that "there's too much to do."

It's the best sort of problem to have unless you look at 400 Riddler trophies and decide "screw it," not even bothering to even try going for them. It's entirely subjective if it's even a problem.

Better in just about every way. It's an absolutely incredible experience.

I still love the shit out of Asylum though.
Asylum is a fantastic game and story but AC in terms of mechanics utterly shits on AA. I don't even want to think of going back to combat with AA after being spoiled with what they give you in AC.

Just started playing this game and could not get used to the keyboard/mouse controls for combat. I played the original on my PS3, so that may be why. That said, I hooked up my DS3 vita MotioninJoy and am enjoying the controls a lot more.

Currently, the Batarang is mapped to L2 and Detective Mode is mapped to L1. How do I go about switching these two? I've never been able to figure it out using this program. The reason it's like that in the first place is because I'm emulating a 360 controller. Is it suggested that for the future I simply set it to "PS3 controller"? What's the best setup?

I don't really get this? I just played through the game and your combat choices for the none-predator stuff is still going to be 99% critical strikes and specials, dodge, and the occasional bat cape if you want to do flawless combos. I 100%'d AA and my really only complaint with AC is how samey some stuff feels, especially the none-predator combat.

Disagree - the options after the cape can be useful like the beatdown, you can counter multiple enemies at once (most I've done so far at once is 4), the triple cape stun can help isolate certain enemies and essentially take them out of a fight for a long time until you want to deal with them later, and special move options like the weapon destroy or (especially for me) the multiple takedown of anyone on the ground are really nice. The multi takedown really really helps when fighting groups of 15+ and can help get that fight over really fast (get combo going, counter 4 guys at once to get them on the ground, then special move to take them out immediately). Can you do it without the additional stuff? Sure, it'll just take a long time - especially at harder difficulties.

I'm barely through the story (yet to start the museum), but I've spent hours just wandering around getting trophies, beating up groups of enemies, and doing side missions. I've upgraded a whole bunch in the meantime - have all available Batman moves, working my way up the armors.

Well, since they added more moves, they could add more enemy types that need specific counters, or they also added more easily accessible weapons during brawls (modifiers or otherwise). I really liked the extra variety in what I could do in combat. Also, the brawls are much larger in AC vs. AA.

But then you could always replay "X+Y Takedown solves everything you can't dodge or counter", which I guess is valid if you like just juicing up your combo multiplier (nothing wrong with that).

The only thing I really found weird is why they rebound quickfire batclaw from double-tap RT to LT+Y, since I got pretty used to that in AA.

Beatdown is probably the lamest thing added to the combat, enemies that required it I would always just use a takedown on them. The multi-enemy counter is alright I guess but it doesn't actually add anything to the combat. The new special move options are alright like you said.. but its just more special moves that you do after every set amount of critical strikes. I am on the warpath through the challenge maps right now and I can say it doesn't really feel like a new experience when it comes to the combat. I kinda feel like I am doing the same challenge maps from AA over again almost.

Of course I have no pretense about it. All of the fights in AA (other than the titan fights) boiled down to getting into a position where you are flying across the map using critical strikes and then just bouncing back and forth (and killing the special guys with takedowns) and you won the fight with max combo. I feel the same way about AC.

Beatdown is awesome. It's great just to be punching the shit out of some enemy and to counter and the animation just flows straight into the counter so naturally, and it's timed so you can do this multiple times.

Fuck these PC issues though! Fuck them so hard. It's at the point where I'm not quitting the game ever, I'm just playing until I crash. Thank god it autosaves so often.

nay! beatdown is the shit. love the combat in this game and i loved it in the last game.

as far as which game is better that is tough. there is more to do in AC, but AA was really great too. i felt like AA was a bit longer. i think AC is better due to the wide open nature and more things to do. i also liked the bosses a bit better in AC. if the killer croc fight in AA was a better one then it might have tipped the scales though!

I think I ran into a bug regarding cat woman... Can anyone help or explain?
After
Ivy catches catwoman
It switches back to Batman.... But I've been playing as batman for a while now, I just beat
Mr. Freeze
and it hasn't switched back to cat woman.

Is this a bug or does it really take that long? I thought the developer said if you had cat woman (included in all PC copies) then the game would switch back and forth.
