College Football Week 14: "We've closed the gap!"

OK, after the stunning weekend for me in football, Colorado winning on the road and Tebowing, I caught up on all the press stories about the Colorado-Utah game.

Utah papers made it out to be way more than I thought it was in the rivalry renewed area.

Its nice that they picked up the old Rumble in the Rockies name, but, I dunno if one game a renewed rivalry makes. I guess its just getting used to it.

Don't think it's really a rivalry yet, but Utah losing should give it some extra oomph next season. ;)

Sorry for the derail there, guys.

White will hurt, but not as bad as losing Strong did. The hardcore recruiting followers think Muschamp's ability in recruiting will gloss over that and replace him without too much trouble. Durkin can fuck right off, he has sucked under two administrations now. I guess he's a good recruiter, but he blows at special teams. Mariotti whipped a bunch of people into shape early on, but has slacked off or something the past few years. I don't know if that's Mariotti or the quality of the player though. His workouts are legendary, so I just don't know.

You guys should have no problems getting top guys as replacements, though. UF recruits itself.

This is weird, how have I never heard of this lol.

You wouldn't, unless you're a Seminole, or maybe a rival.

Maybe I'm missing something but from the stats I found Florida was #6 in the nation in yards per game that year.

2009 Total Offense

Regardless as a Buckeye fan anything is better than what we witnessed from an offensive standpoint this year.

Yeah, that was mostly Tebow running like crazy. But we would falter in the redzone.

I don't remember where 93rd came from exactly, but I read it in an article. I guess scoring? Or red zone efficiency? Either way...

Meyer is an excellent developer of players as people and teammates. He's also hard nosed and strict and that leads to good locker room discipline which wins games. But in his last few years, he lets players get away with failed drug tests, arrests, other covered up minor crimes. Meyer of 2006 would never have.

Memory reminds me, that Florida's offense that year consisted of:
Tebow Dive play, Demps Dive Play, Rainey Dive Play, Demps or Rainey Speed sweep, the double option play with Demps/Rainey on the outside pitch, or Hernandez on the inside pitch, and "Throw it deep to Riley Cooper"

good luck to all the fans of teams in conference championship games.

and good luck on the spread transition, Buckeye fans. may your transition be at least a little smoother than ours.

and may your top recruit come to Michigan where a great running back is greatly needed. we haven't had one of those for half a decade.

You also have to consider that team was loaded, LOADED, with NFL talent on both sides. They simply out-talented every team but Bama that year.

Others probably thought about this, but the fact that OSU of all teams, is switching to the Spread, following Michigan's attempt at it, boggles my mind.

I know that OSU fans had to have laughed @ Michigan's Spread failures in the past, and now they'll end up changing their tunes because it's happening to them now.

Another fun fact (because I'm justified in my Urban bashing now, but when I first said this I was pilloried):

With Dan Mullen, Tebow, and Harvin, the UF offense was the 8th ranked (I think) offense in the NCAA in 2008. The next year, we lose Mullen and Harvin (but gain Addazio) and our offense drops to 93rd. Still with Tebow and a lot of the great receivers. Harvin wasn't the cause of that steep of a drop, although it would have dropped anyway. With Addazio in charge, we were beating terrible teams by a touchdown or less. Part of Meyer's "Plan to Win". So if you hear that phrase, be afraid.

You've hit the nail on the head here.

BTW, credit to you and the other Florida fans here. It was cool that they did a tribute to Munson at the game on Saturday. Very cool, and makes me hate Florida a little less. Just a little.

Dont forget they had Louis Murphy too.

I thought that was a cool moment as well. Hope one day the favor is repaid after Mick calls his last game.

Dear mre,

I've noticed that you've been dispensing advice on these boards for all sorts of problems. Therefore, I was wondering if you could help me with my peculiar set of circumstances. I recently discovered that I had some rather odious odor emitting from my feet. No matter what I do, I just cannot get rid of it.

Please help me stop being a smelly mess.

Signed,

Sirpopopop

Think 2009 Florida was 98th in Red Zone Scoring. Helps that they were in the Red Zone ALOT. Finished 25th in actual Red Zone Touchdowns.

Finished top 10 in Scoring offense, Total Offense, Running Offense, Scoring Defense, Total Defense, and a few other categories.

2009 Florida wasn't much of a decline. Maybe some sort of perceived decline, but nothing to worry about. Instead of winning by 30, they won by 20!

They even improved in their Yearly Loss! 2009 Alabama > 2008 Ole Miss!

Ahhh to make this morning even better just got me some jimmy johns.

I got an extra Jimmy John's yesterday, sitting in the fridge here at work. I wonder if I can sneak in an early snack...

Yeah I can remember some of those struggles, especially with how highly regarded Florida was during that season. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of uncertainty about this hire. And if I was a Florida fan, I would be bashing Meyer non-stop today. There is no way not to see the hypocrisy in his actions. The guy quits on his team to 'put his family and health' first, then once the Ohio St job opens up he is candidate #1 and jumps right in. What changed? And what's to say that the same thing won't happen at OSU? But from a purely football standpoint OSU got the best man that they could.

I wouldn't have a problem with our band repaying the favor when that happens.

I've never liked him. He's a fair weather coach. He will go to where it is advantageous for him and where he thinks he can win with the personnel that's there. When his coaching brainpower starts to leave or he loses his playmakers, he bolts for greener pastures. I've never believed the health reasons excuse.

Maybe there will be a clause in his contract, that he has to bust out the SweaterVests on Gamedays. Those things cost too much money to sit in Mothballs.

Better not blow it on the last week of the year!

His defenses in the early 2000s at Land Thief U were scary good.

I just hope he stays far, far away from the Dirt Burglars if Venables stupidly leaves for a job like Kansas.

Hey now, Kansas can combine both their recruits and the recruits Mizzou left on the table to make a super middling team!

Heh, that's the same reason I picked 'em to win.

Now that I think about it, it's actually a good opportunity to recruit Missouri... although lots of Missouri kids are no doubt raised to despise KU.

Fuck those guys for being abolitionist before it was cool. What a bunch of anti-slavery hipsters.

Meyer was a fantastic coach and recruiter and all that but he was also an asshole.
It's no coincidence that a lot of very successful people in all walks of life are assholes.

At least you Gator guys are admitting that now. Though some were okay with admitting it as long as he was winning games there. When that started to go they started to turn on him.

He handled a lot of things internally but burned some bridges on the way out. Meyer recruiting kids in the state of Florida should be interesting in the next few months.

I was worried when after halftime the ESPN reporter said DE Jenkins was out, but his replacement filled in quite nicely for FSU:

Congrats on the ridiculously lopsided win! I think Franklin will be around for a while.
Thanks. My sister and her husband went to Wake, so they weren't happy, but they're going to a bowl too so they can shut it. And yeah, I'm excited for what Franklin will do in the next few years. We should have beaten both Arkansas and Tennessee, so hopefully we keep getting better and his recruits get stronger.

ESPN is predicting Liberty Bowl for us, which sucks for me. I wanted to do the Music City Bowl again and I'm not driving down to Memphis. Oh well.

Don't think it's really a rivalry yet, but Utah losing should give it some extra oomph next season. ;)

Yeah, they seem way sour about the whole deal.

I still want a hippie/weed rivalry with Berkeley.

The single biggest key to the game: OU's pass rush.

If they can get pressure on Weeden, it will be a close game. If they don't, we'll light your secondary the fuck up.

Also, if we can defend the run even decently well, we should be able to stop OU. Keeping you out of 3rd or 4th and short (and keeping Bell off the field) will be huge.

Expecting to see a strong and focused effort after the Abortion in Ames™.

This is the stuff of nightmares. Our DBs look confused as fuck half the time. I don't know if it's coaching, play calling, or if they're just dumb. Maybe a lil of all. But if you guys come in hot Weeden might have playstation numbers.

That said, I have seen OU play inspired football a couple times this season and the outcome has been glorious. If they play with some fire and Landry is on then it's going to be an awesome game. If not we'll be routed by half-time.

Tennessee finishes with consecutive losing records for the first time since 1910-11.

Happy 100th Anniversary, Hillybillies!

That's what I hear regarding burning bridges on the way out. He did tend to handle things internally and was able to keep wraps on a lot of problems on the team.

The thing is, the teams OU played "inspired football" against weren't all that good. FSU is decent but has a subpar offense. As for Texas' offense... :jnc. Also, KSU's passing offense is anemic, which is the main way OU's D is exploitable. Besides those games, OU hasn't really played like a dominant team all year.

I feel like as long as we don't lose the turnover battle, we'll win. That mental edge OU has built over us is still there, though.

Soap + water, brah. At least that's what Derek Dooley suggested that Tennessee's players use on their smelly bits. Hopefully it will work for you, too.

Saw this posted on another site, a quote from Urban Meyer at his press conference following his first announced retirement:

But what I didn’t want to have happen, and I made this clear to Jeremy, if I am able to go coach, I want to coach at one place, the University of Florida. It would be a travesty, it would be ridiculous to all of a sudden come back and get the feeling back, get the health back, feel good again and then all of a sudden go throw some other colors on my shirt and go coach. I don’t want to do that. I have too much love for this University and these players and for what we’ve built.

Kind of falls in line with what some of the Gator posters have been saying.

Well yeah.. If I were OSU administration/regents I'd start looking at promising young coaches now and have a plan in place for 4 years from now.
