The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

Yeah, but it's not quite EVERYTHING else. Like video doesn't, and I suppose that kind of makes sense.
Of course not everything, I didn't expect him to know that much to begin with. But it's nice to know that the twitter app, and potentially the rest of the social apps, can be run in parallel to games.

Yeah, as I edited in, it's at least reassuring that chances are they won't pull a last minute bait-and-switch on that functionality...if they're still touting it so close to launch. Not that I was particularly concerned that they would, but I know some are or have been.

I have a question.

Considering it's tiny physical size, will the memory cards ever even reach 64GB or 128GB?
The M2 cards that the PSP Go used capped at 16GB!

It's similar to microSD physically which hasn't seen larger than 32GB.*
*Actually, a bit of googling shows that a 64GB microSD was recently introduced, and this is years since the format has been on the market.

We don't know yet. Obviously a new tiny memory card standard will be necessary for faster transfers and higher capacity beyond MicroSD. Maybe the Vita cards take advantage of some new standard. But there's no reason to believe it. Right now, it just looks like a moneygrab.

As time goes on I expect bigger cards. The M2s stopped at 16GB likely because there wasn't any popular device using them.

Are these cards proprietary? Shit... Is there a feasible way around Sony's assfuckingly high priced solution?

It's proprietary, and I doubt Sony will allow third parties, or those Micro SD converters work.

It's something I'm hoping myself, because with the much larger game sizes I'm going to probably end up wanting at least a jump to 64 GB in a few years. Especially if we do get 16 GB games.

Why does the guy presenting look so ... sad?

'Cause he realized that he spent so much of his time working on something that is going to be dead on arrival...

AMIRITE!? Hehehe.

Seriously though, this machine looks better everyday. The card prices are absurd, but I'll still bite and I'll enjoy that bite.

More Modnation Racers: Road Trip info:

With ModNation Racers: Road Trip and Vita in hand (or pocket) you can create and tote your favorite Mods along with you while “on the road”. Anything that catches your eye from a statue in a garden courtyard to the gigantic inflatable mascot at a high school football game can instantly be preserved in time with your portable Mod Studio.

Here are a few of the new features…

1. Mod Parts
Creating a Mod has always been a fairly straightforward, simple, yet powerful process. Mod Parts now streamlines the process even more with instant access to your Mods parts and features. Touch your finger to your creations head and all parts and props groups for the head pop up (eyes, ears, nose, etc…). Touch his body and all parts and props for his torso appear (pants, shoes, shirts, etc…). Sounds simple because it is.

2. Drag and Drop
Once you have chosen your selected area it’s again as simple as drag and drop the features and props right onto your Mod. With parts like eyes, ears, stickers, etc., you can stretch, pinch, move and rotate to your heart’s desire. You can also do things like change the color of most anything by simply touching the color picker tab at the top right. There is just something that makes the “modding” experience a lot more fun when the items are “at your fingertips”.

Whether you are working on your Mod for minutes or hours you will appreciate the ease and feel of these new features.

Yeah, that's pretty wild. Since the OS apparently allows you to take screen grabs of games at any time, you could conceivably capture a noteworthy gaming moment, then post it up on a social network or photo sharing site for all your friends to see while you're still in the middle of that game.

That's interesting. When I tried to browse the web it told me I had to quit the Uncharted demo to do so. Will try again next time I go there.

I hope that's just a limitation of this particular demo, and not an indication that this sort of functionality won't be present in the final product.

This is a pretty interesting vid. Shows a lot of stuff shown at the London event, including more footage of Fifa than I'd seen to date.

But I'll also highlight this bit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bahf54IAmwM&t=50

Finally some in-game multitasking action? He's in modnation, hits the home button, opens settings, then hits the home button again, and opens Welcome Park. And, unless I'm mistaken, isn't prompted to close anything. I'm surprised Welcome Park would be multi-task-able - I guess maybe it's a 'light' app rather than a full-mode one?

Pleasingly it all looks fast.

FIFA looks very promising and if marketed well could be a huge boost for VIta in euroland. In fact i have pushed back this year's FIFA ps3 purchase to see how does Vita version play, and if it succeeds and delivers the same experience i will switch to portable for sure as i will be able to do the same as on home consoles plus playing anywhere. Sony should be aware of that when doing ads and so.

Oh I've been tempted but videos of the game running on Vita are warranting the wait.

I'm waiting too, might double dip if there's cloud saving and i can continue on the go at anytime.

New Super Stardust Delta hands on, this game really needs more exposure, day 1 for me.

http://www.pushsquare.com/34786/super-stardust-delta-on-playstation-vita-hands-on-impressions/

The game offers a smattering of play options, divided between traditional and modern controls. The former is the classic Super Stardust experience you’ve come to know and love, relying on lightning quick reactions and slick use of the PlayStation Vita’s small but accurate analogue sticks. Meanwhile the latter introduces a smattering of touch and tilt inputs, allowing you to look around the game’s three-dimensional arena by moving the system in real-space.

The PlayStation Vita specific inputs are a nice novelty, but it’s the traditional controls that we suspect will draw players in. And we’re pleased to confirm that Delta is every bit the adversary to its PlayStation 3 counterpart.

Movement and aiming feels slick and fluid, with the introduction of new weapon specific secondary attacks breathing new life into the core mechanics. The primary laser leash includes the option to distribute a black-hole on the stage, sucking everything into the void including your ship. Unlike previous Super Stardust power-ups, the black-hole is not a get out of jail free card. You’ll need to be precise with your escape plan, avoiding on-coming debris as a stream of hazards come flying towards your ship. But as you’d expect, the ultimate pay-off is worth-while.

Naturally the game looks stunning on the PlayStation Vita’s OLED screen, with the deep blacks of the game’s space setting contrasting against the glow of shattered rocks and streams of fire-power. Most importantly, no matter how chaotic the game gets, Delta maintains its buttery smooth frame-rate.

This thing is looking more like a summer/fall pick up for me now. My excitement has really died down over the last few weeks. I think waiting until after e3 to buy in is a wise move.

Yeah, i can see that :) It is something different to play the game for the first time compared to doubledip, and a game like Rayman Origins seems to be perfect for a handheld system.

I'm hoping that using bombs isnt only triggered by touch screen, since as the hands on says, the game is relying on lightning quick reactions. Or maybe it could work if the bomb icon is in on of the lower corners, so it is really fast to move between the screen and the stick.

Bombs on the rear touch would probably make the most sense, nice and easy to reach and shouldn't affect your ability to control the ship.

Looking at some of those videos makes me forget all about the memory card price...

The Vita is easily one of the most beautiful devices I've ever seen. Most of the games I've seen all look wonderful in motion and nothing looks like it is "out of place." The Vita has a massive launch line-up that should cater to a lot of people, but my only concern with that is that a lot of people will look at the line-up and just blink past it because it has a few games that are already available on the PS3 or 360. They will probably get this idea that the machine is just playing watered down versions of the same games you can get elsewhere.

Sony needs to market the Vita correctly and extremely heavily out of the gate... no talking squirrels, no "black and white" ads, no creepy baby ads... just show off the hardware, tell the public what it can do and how it differentiates itself from phones and the 3DS and then bring them in with the games. If Sony starts veering to the strange for the marketing, then I will start to worry. Also, if Sony starts to veer the library into nothing but ports, then I will give up hope for the machine. Sony also needs to make sure porting is relatively crushed. They can't have another PSP where most of the library are ported games that you could simply buy on the PS3 or 360.

Sony will no doubt have a fight on their hands with the Vita, but I think they can do very well if they can get the price of the machine down quickly, start making bundles with memory cards and keep up unique games.

I seriously can't wait for this thing... I don't usually pre-order things, but I think I might do it right away.

PS3 System Software Update (v.4.00)
A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PS Vita in Japan, this update will prepare the PS3 to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their media content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.

As well, it appears Vita won't be suffering from immediate post-launch drought in Japan, as software seems to be continuing at a decent pace in January (Tales of Innocence R) and February (Gravity Daze).

That will make or break the Vita, I think. If Sony can keep publishers releasing titles at a decent pace and hopefully month to month, the machine will be successful.

The ad though... I don't know. That doesn't really tell anyone about the system... come on Sony...

How could you not mention about Ragnarok Odyssey (02/02 afair)?

I wanted to go with the biggest releases of each month. This is the lineup post launch thus far:

1/19: Wipeout 2048
1/26: Tales of Innocence R
2/2: Ragnarok Odyssey
2/9: Gravity Daze
2/9: Sumioni
2/16: Gyokugen Dasshutsu Adv Zennin Shiboudes
2/23: Little Busters! Converted Edition
2/?: Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus

Well, I hope GD is the biggest seller in February (sorry Sumioni)...

is there any hype with Sumioni? the first video I've seen from that looks bad, like really really bad, rather than looking like a character walking, it felt like the main charcater just float around while doing running animation etc. I also remember impression saying the gameplay felt clunky.

That seems the best lineup for any system next year

:P

I'm still trying to decide on what to get on launch, aside from Uncharted. I'll need something that could entertain me a lot of hours, and Uncharted don't fit in that description. Any chance of having any RPG in Europe near launch?

I think Acquire can pull a decent game out of it.

I think we'll get Rayman Origins somewhere around the western launch, but there hasn't been any dates announced yet afair.

mmmmm mmmmmmm....

mmmmm...

mmmmmmmmm....

mm... hai!

I actualy avoided the MGS collection and rayman, for the vita versions. Call me crazy. But yes... dat OLED is even crazier.

Likewise. MGS and ZOE collections on the go. My body is sufficiently ready.

Yup. I'm hoping to see indy devs jump on this thing as well. I would love to play something like Limbo or Joe Danger on the go.

I like this idea - reminds me of one of the 3D maze games on iPad. Using touch almost entirely as a cosmetic effect while the main controls are still standard.

I'm sure this has been asked, but if I have only wired internet at home, will there be any way for me to hook this thing up to the internet? I'm starting to consider buying a Vita but without wireless internet at my house or having a 3G provider I might not be able to get it online. I have a PS3 if that matters.

If you have a notebook, you can turn it into a hotspot using either Windows 7 network options or free software called connectify.

I set it up for my PSP just to notice that it doesn't support the encryption options that this kind of hotspot enforces (still use it for my iPhone though). Hopefully Vita will, so there should be no problem.
