EA listing "next-gen" as platform for some of their titles:

If it's just the WiiU, why not... list it as "WiiU"?
Deserves own thread?

Because nintendo is strictly prohibiting 3rd parties from announcing any titles until some future point in time?
Not that that's confirmed or anything, but I could see it being a possibility. Nintendo is pretty anal.
You're still ignoring the fact that it makes zero sense to sell a DD-only SKU when the on-board memory will be filled with a single game, and most people's monthly bandwith caps obliterated along with it. And retailers still aren't allowing publishers to release their games day and date in digital formats (for consoles at least). It's a terrible business model for anything outside of the PC space. Any console (or SKU) shipping without an optical drive will be DoA until at least 2020.
Do you think these problems are insurmountable to microsoft? Let's list list your complaints:
1) Only 16 gigs of flash
2) Bandwidth Caps
3) Retailers don't like it
I'm at work so I'm not going to explain how each of these are surmountable (#1 in at least 2 ways, maybe 3) to a company of Microsoft's size, but I will say that the solid state SKU is not targeted at you or me. It's targeted at other people. People who bought the Wii for Wii Sports or Wii Fit, or the 360 for Kinect.
A DD only console would be an XBL box, not something that can play the same games as an optical system. Maybe some smaller 360 games could be rereleased.
Casuals would eat that shit up. Kinect compatibility, catchup TV, Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, maybe a fully featured web browser (though the content partners would not like that, which is why I'm guessing the 360 hasn't had one). Then a bunch of smaller games and XBox rereleases and smaller 360 games. Throw in a few dedicated download only titles form the major franchises (FIFA, Halo, GOW, etc.) and you're onto a winner.
You'd just need to keep the USB Mass Storage option, maybe add an SD slot for those that really get into it. Use WM7 phones as a remote and voice control and some kind of Windows Extender functionality to tie all the properties together, it'd be Ballmer's wet dream.
It would not be a games console as much as a set top box with some Xbox games on it, you're coming at it from the wrong angle.
This is how I've been seeing it also. This set-top version will not be capable of playing Xbox3-level games, and possibly not even 360 games that weren't downloadable. Since the games won't be large in size (couple GBs at most), there won't be a need to do a lot of storage. That is unless this thing has some kind of HD-DVR functionality, but that could have it's own dedicated storage space.
Sounds like a Kinect base settop box for 2012. True nextbox in 2013.
They can always just connect a USB HDD. *cough*
Why would MS bother putting next gen hw in a set top box? They could easily put this kind of concept into action with the 360 hw.
People who buy consoles for Wii Sports/Fit or Kinect are less likely to have their consoles connected to the internet, and less likely to purchase console games over the internet instead of a brick and mortar store.
You claim you have a list of arguments why MS could pull this off, but you've yet to explain why they should. Kinect is a Trojan Horse to sell you LIVE and bunch of software. People with no optical drive aren't going to buy $50, 7-15 GB retail games over the internet.
By the rumors:
HD7850 (~HD6950)--> 90w
HD7870 (~HD6970)--> 105w
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=453713
so 6970 equivalent sounds fairly doable? And that'd perform significantly above what a 6970 does in a PC now due to the controlled environment.
Interesting new title listing by EA?

Maybe just Wiiu

How can MS relese a next-gen console in 2012 if Halo 4 releases on 360 at the same time?

They probably would have just said WiiU then since that is already annouced. Them simply saying Next Gen is weird.
I'm hoping the next-gen Xbox releases Fall 2012 with a GOTY edition of Skyrim and Battlefield 3 on launch day, with both taking advantage of the extra horsepower. EA released BF2: Modern Combat on Xbox and then later on 360...really hope they do the same IF the system does hit next year..
I also think it would be strange for MS to release the set-top before the 360's successor. Many will see the new Xbox set-top as Microsoft's answer to Wii U in 2012. A new Xbox that can't play their Xbox 360 library. Just seems like a bad move from a business standpoint. Release the full blown next-gen system first and then announce a very scaled down set-top box for those that wouldn't mind only having what that device offers.
Release it on Nextbox as well with better textures, a couple of exclusive features and cross-platform multiplayer.
i'll buy it but that's hatefull for all the not-wealthy Halo fans.
Day one consoles are whether very expensive or hard to find, I don't see the interest of splitting the community around who is rich/lucky.
Stockpile what? You think they're launching on 40nm?If MS starts stockpiling from now, 3 million by this time next year should be a piece of cake. For reference, AMD was able to ship 25 million DX11 units in under a year.
Cognitive dissonance. How can MS relese a next-gen console in 2012 if Halo 4 releases on 360 at the same time?

The best selling XBL game (Castle Crashers)Why use 360 hardware when they can have an upsell of an add-on into their 3rd generation?
360 development will dry up quickly once the 3rd generation xbox is out, and even then, it splits the developer base - some games come out on one, and some games come out on the other.
How are they going to use netflix if they don't hook it up to the internet? Do people not already buy full games on xbox live? It would be a base box, and a device to bring people in.
You make a flat statement that people without optical drives won't buy software of the internet. Can you explain the logic behind that one? Would they buy $15 or $20 software, but have a cutoff point where they just won't buy something more expensive no matter how exciting or popular?
If that ends up being true, no doubt. However, I have doubts about this rumor.
.
Cognitive dissonance.

The best selling XBL game (Castle Crashers)
a) is less than 2 GB
b) has sold less than 2 million copies LTD on a userbase of nearly 60 million
This on the most popular console online gaming service in the world. So why would MS sell loss-leading hw to an audience (Kinect owners) that has zero history of being heavily involved with XBL (there are no Kinect-exclusive XBLA games yet, only a handful of Kinect retail releases are available online, and KS/DC, despite selling millions of copies, never sniff the XBL top 20) and seems to be quite content with buying games in stores all year round (see: Just Dance and Zumba Fitness sales this summer on Wii)?
It's a pointless attempt to fit a square peg in a round hole. The only people buying DD en masse these days are PC gamers and smartphone gamers, two devices that are perpetually connected to the internet. If MS does release a set top box without an optical drive, the cheaper 360 hw makes sense (because 360 software doesn't have a problem selling).
Why are people so fixated on this 2012 release date? Why would MS rush another console to release if it turned out so horrible for them last time?

Why would it be rushed? Or do people think the development of the console starts after the announcement? If yes, that's very naive. This thing is probably in development for a few years already.

Me thinks it's nothing
Saw this yesterday and couldn't find it in me to respond... but now I saw it again and I have to. This is the most bullshit ever.
This is just some guy speculating that an invite is related to xbox news, no hint anywhere that it's Xbox related, or that Xbox news is coming. MS have invited people to CES in the past, will do so in the future. The Xbox is a CONSUMER device.
This is just a nut job wanting to see signs...
I really do think Ballmer is sitting in an office with a gannt chart on the wall that has Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and the next Xbox all launching Q4 next year, and probably also on that gannt chart is the day 4 months down the line where he gets to announce Microsoft's biggest quarter ever and silence his critics, but I think the practicalities of doing that will become apparent and things will change.
Or maybe more accurately, they already changed.
I love how StevieP comes up with his interpretation of rumours and then treat them as absolute facts.
Was this comment necessary? Refute them and a discussion can be had.
Just annoyed by your extremely confident posts in a rumour thread. JMHO.

They should really give up already on grasping at straws.. Pubs clearly have like zero plans for 2012 launch the way they keep announcing late 2012 and 2013 stuff
