This isn't the first time that Whimsical Dastardly Phil has attempted to claim ownership of that towel.

He must think we're all a bunch of birdbrains to try and pull one over on us like that. I'm glad the truth came out, and I'll be keeping a closer eye on him in the future.

I remembered Phil had that from that thread because it's amazingly cool. I usually don't get starstruck and while I did have a favorite rapper of mine, Aesop Rock, sign my Kindle at a concert recently, autographs normally don't do anything for me either. But man, what an awesome thing to have on display. I love that the copy of the book is worn too, instead of a new copy. I believe kids refer to that sort of design aesthetic as "legit."

What can I say? I figured that this marriage would be the perfect ploy to steal that towel, but California marriage law has thwarted my plans.

Although framing the towel with the book was my idea. The only copy of Hitchhiker's that we had here was the omnibus edition, so I had to go online to track down a perfectly worn (but not too worn) copy to accompany the towel. And it had to be that specific cover. That's the cover of the version of the book that both Dana and I first read all those years ago.

only takes about 10-12 hours to complete. There is still ample exploration and puzzle solving in that game without a bunch of added fluff and filler. In the time it takes to finish that game, you're barely out of the introductory "here's how to play" bits of Twilight Princess. I'd rather play a tight, 12-hour Zelda game than a drawn-out, poorly paced game that goes on for 50 hours.

And like Sewart said, wives, kids, and jobs can make you less tolerant of games that go on forever for the sake of simply going on forever.

Agreed. It's very rare (especially now) that I'll want to play a game more than 20 hours. I think the last time I did that might've been Blue Dragon which I put close to 75 in for. I don't have time for games that pad their runtime with busywork or non-optional sidequests. And I will say that the longer the game, the less polished any one area seems to be and it brings the whole package down. I have time to pop in a game, have an hour or two of enjoyment at a time, and then need to be able to pick it up again quickly whenever I get back 'round to it. ;)

Haven't listened to this episode yet but will have to in between the munchkin's feedings. I saw the runtime and was like :O
 
Great show guys! Even though I'm looking forward to playing Skyrim at some point, it's refreshing to hear a skyrim-gushing free podcast. :)

Game length is definitely a concern. Right now I'm playing Xenoblade and Dark Souls, both of which are eating my free time. I have Zelda coming on Friday, so I'm putting the other two on ice. I'm about 35 hours into each of those games and I feel as though I'm scratching the surface, and Skyrim would be no better, other than the fact that I don't care whether I complete the story of Elder Scrolls games, I treat it like a sandbox.

I genuinely think the 2D perspective helps to make games appear larger than they are, as you're essentially looking at areas through a peephole the entire time. The areas of Link to the past wouldn't feel large in scale if you could see so much content at once. I think this is part of the reason that the 3D Zelda Games tend to be a good chunk longer.

I would love to see more 12 hour games too. Are there any 3D action RPGs that have offered a sizable adventure but only take 10-15 hours?

I mean, I don't get the appeal, but others can feel free to play and enjoy them. I find it weird that those are the ONLY graphic adventure games they play. Why them? Recognizable licensed properties? Because they're multiplatform, maybe, whereas most from-PC-ports stay in Europe or Asia? There are even casual, browser-based ones that might be fun. "Following Freeware" and "Casual Collection" on Adventure Gamers' website tracks them, for instance.

Please do. I've played some on the iPad that were so-so. But I haven't really found any that recapture the love I had for them as a kid. If it takes a retail price to do that, so be it.

That's the story with all of the big names really. They're avoiding recession and the autumn/winter blockbusters. Still, even in a lean year, there's stuff worth exploring.

That's interesting. You guys did Puzzle Agent, Bone, and Strong Bad, right? Was that because of affection for Telltale because of Sam And Max (and Monkey Island later), or because you liked Bone and Strong Bad?

Seems pretty obvious, the Telltale games are clearly the most high profile adventure games nowadays. (unless you want to include stuff like Heavy Rain or LA Noire) Not to say there aren't some other good adventure games out there, but you generally have to go out of your way more to find them/find out which ones are actually good.

I actually didn't do any of those. Monkey Island, Sam & Max and Back to the Future for me. And Jurassic Park.

I'm at World 8 now and man... This is the best platformer I've played in years, Mario or otherwise. I like the Galaxy games but these levels are so much more approachable and bite-sized that it's made playing through it an absolute blast. Definite GOTY contender for me, quite unexpectedly - I wasn't even sure I was going to pick this up until i heard good things after the Japanese release a week or two ago.

It makes the purchase of a 3DS completely and totally worth it. I know Nintendo gets accused of churning out the same stuff over and over but when the games are this good it's hard to complain. I get my copy of skyward sword on Wednesday and can't wait to dig into that as well.
 
Batman spoilers

I love when you're near the end game and the Joker says Batman should get there faster or you'd have to read the spoilers on the internet. I lol'ed hard.

The way they dealt with the whole spoiler thing was great. Not only did it help promote the game but it also avoided people getting spoiled by internet assholes with a "the Joker dies" comment, since you wouldn't know that was referring to the actual end of the game. Classic case of hiding something by plastering it all over people's faces.

Can you speak to the "worldbuilding" on the next show? I think it's easy to lob the "uninspired" tag at the aesthetics, world coherence, and powerup/enemy inclusion at the smaller Super Mario platformers, even if the level design is as tight as ever. I'm not always as inspired by the game as much as I enjoy it.

Yes. That's the intern reviewing it. I can understand the point about the game's boundaries to a point, but that's not what the Uncharted series tries to be in any respect, so to complain about it as much as that review did is just silly/stupid.

the baby talk is fine and adds to the podcast. if nothing else, it's something all of you can relate to in some way, so the discussion doesn't end up being one person rambling on while everyone else mumbles occasionally (which can happen if someone's discussing a game no one else has played yet). I also like that the podcast is a fair bit shorter than it used to be. You guys also sound a lot more natural than a couple years ago. There's a definite improvement!

I would like it if you guys did a few more shows that focused on a specific game, idea, or event in the industry - shows that people would like to listen to a couple years from now. Maybe one special each quarter?

also, it is sort of annoying that each show description has the same blurb on the iphone/android app.

suggestion for the app that likely won't be implemented: label the sections of the episode and allow the viewer to skip to the start for each section. If you use the This American Life app, you'll know what I'm talking about.

I enjoy the show even though I sporadically listen. I hope it's around for many more years. Back when it started, I thought it would be dead in a couple months after you guys lost interest. I'm impressed that it's still around and steadily improving.
 
The Giving Tree is the shit, and I'm glad to hear that people still read it. It's such a simple story, but those are often the best.

CJ, Skyward Sword doesn't even use the sensor bar. It's all relative positioning with the gyros and stuff, so you can hold it wherever. It probably works better if you actually don't go out of your way to point at the TV.
 
I find myself enjoying this podcast more every week. I think this has become my favourite podcast behind WAHP (which doesn't have a consistent release schedule). This is one of the few podcasts where I love all the hosts.

One small thing I really enjoy is just the timing of game discussions. Batman last week and Uncharted and Skyward Sword this week. It's really nice to have a podcast play games at the pace I do. All the big podcasts are games media people who finish them before they're released so they talk about stuff before any normal person has gotten to them. Or they have to hold back so much and be so vague to avoid spoilers that the discussion is useless.

On another note, what was the song played during the break? I've heard it before, but it's been years. It's bothering me because I can't remember where I heard it.
