The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

The PSP Go had the great functionality of being able to suspend any game at any point and allow you to use the other system functions like music player. I assume Vita does this? It better.

not too torn (no pun intended) on the jaggies. It'll look a little better on the OLED screen. This is version 1 of the interface so it could only get better. AA shouldn't be that hard to implement to smooth things out for those that are offended by the "stairs".

BigBig just posted this link up on Twitter: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150401989182441.351202.182634642440&type=3&l=96b99a1ef0 << new shots of Little Deviants.

^^ Test, not sure if I can direct link to FB images.

Not quite. That's just suspending the game and going into the system menu. I mean like hibernating the game into memory and getting full system access.

Not 100%, I think you can running up to 6 apps (?) but I have no idea if there will be work with 2 games or more.

Im not sure it will have save state (it's what you mean?) on game.

I don't think so. Can't really do any multi-tasking that I've found.
Of course you can, as it is part of the four (five, if you include the camera) apps that can run alongside any game. However, you can only run one of those apps at a time when a game is suspended, so you can't background multiple apps + game. Also, the browser runs like crap in that mode from my experience, so never try doing anything other than light browsing.

Vita Web Browser Can't Be Used While Playing Games

Sorry if old.

Was hoping this would not be the case, but I hope they can fix this in a firmware update.
I'm pretty sure they already confirmed that they'd patch "while-playing" browser-support later on, like, within the last 24 hours and it was even posted in this (or some other Vita related) thread. I'm too lazy to try and find the (possible) post where it was mentioned (+ I'm supposed to be writing this 12-page report as we speak ;P ), so you can either take my word for it or look for it yourself. :P

Sarcasm.

I happen to (still) think it's looking like the best game system OS yet. Jaggies 'n all.
You're crazy. The Vita's OS aesthetics are easily the worst part about the system. Its got all of the iPhones simplicity without any of the elegance.

Sorry, but iOS is elegant?

It's a good thing Vita is steering WAAAAAAAAAAY the fuck away from iOS aesthetics.

iOS is polished to perfection functionality-wise, but it's aesthetically stale. I'll take Vita's cluttered charm over that any day of the week.

Yes, I would say the OS on my iPhone looks elegant. At the very least it looks elegant in comparison to the Vita's OS.

I wouldn't call this cluttered. I'd say it's taking the Apple approach and branching off in the wrong direction. The bubbles just look plain old tackey to me, and it has been one of the biggest complaints about the system. At least up until the memory issue took center stage.

Maybe if you like staring a bunch of squares and scrolling through a pile of mess.
I'm sorry, but what are you talking about? You praise the Vita's home screen, but then turn around and bash Apple's when they're essentially the same thing save for the choice of squares over bubbles.

I'd rather wait and see how the OS feels in my hands before jumping to conclusions.
I'm not arguing in any way against that the Vita's OS is beautiful when it comes to functionality. In fact, every video we've seen thus far indicates this. My 'issue' is that the OS itself is ugly. I just do not like the bubble design at all from a pure aesthetics perspective. Gofreak mentioned jaggies when talking about how he likes the OS's design, so I took that to mean the visuals and aesthetics. I heavily disagree that it is visually great, let alone the best released for a game console.

Maybe cluttered was the wrong word. I meant visually inconsistent.

When I think of aesthetic elegance, I think of OS X Lion, Windows Phone 7, XMB. iOS is approaching BlackBerry levels of stagnancy appearance-wise.

Also, there are jaggies on the index cards.

Worst OS ever.[/QUOTE]

For the entire lifespan of the Vita I will curse the name of who ever convinced Sony to ditch the XMB. It wasn't perfect to be sure but man it was close and the whole "but it won't work with touch!" is bullshit since you can tile the icons (like sony already does on MP3 players) and treat it like iOS does.

Bubbles man... bubbles. What did I do to deserve this?

Not me. Complaining will help these last three months fly by!

I like the OS. The only thing I don't like about Vita (other than having to pay $120 for a Memory Card :( ) is the lack of big name games.

it's been a while since i asked this, so maybe someone has an answer now. has it been stated how and where apps will be stored? if i have multiple cards, will i have to install netflix, facebook, and twitter on all of them? or is it somehow stored on the device?

Those three features you mention will be part of OS firmware software (Not sure netflix will come to Vita yet). It will be used internal flash memory, just like PS3 and PSP.

If you mean the 3rd party apps like android market. It will be like other PSN, you will need memory card.

alright, thanks! and isn't netflix and obvious app, even if it hasn't been announced?

Well, Sony did said they allow to have non-game app on Vita. I dunno what kind of allowance.

Netfilx could be not part on OS software because it will ensure everyone have memory card to work proper because they have to download it on MCard first.

Those memory card prices are interesting in that I remember paying closer to $200 for a 1gb memory stick for my PSP back in 2005. :\

Is that $350 early bird package going to run out? The more I think about it, that deal seems pretty good. With the whole memory card debacle, I don't plan to get bigger than 4GB any time soon, I'll want a case, and LittleDeviants looks fun enough to justify itself.

So the only question is whether 3G+GPS is worth $50. After seeing some of the live-updating community features in Unit 13, I'm thinking it might be.

Okay!

I want a 3G unit for GPS. I want to play t@g and write bad words everywhere.

It won't be as closed as the PS3 seems to be. IIRC Vita's devkits are the cheapest PlayStation devkits at launch in the history of the brand. Looking around, it seems that Europeans will pay €1900 (or like $2600 straight conversion). As for how an indie can get it, well it seems pretty easily. A bunch of small indie studios are making Vita games. I don't know exactly how and where to get a devkit, but I imagine snooping around Sony's Developer Website might result in something. As for development assistance, Sony is known for being very helpful, but I wouldn't know.

I only suggest Suite since if I were an indie studio I'd be much more interested in targeting Vita, Android, and potentially more than just Vita with one release. There's also supposed to be some developer's community for Suite.

Thank you for your answer. was very helpful

I remember that, I almost spent 1GB near £90 this time. Wow things change fast.
So I shouldn't worry about Vita MC price too much then.

I thought it will be $100 for 32GB because I used Apple to compare how they charge for with their iPod and iPhone. Not too bad as I thought. Relive that it didn't push me down too much, imagine that thinking Vita MC will be cheap before they announced. I can feel you if someone thought that.

Well, Takao's right. At this point in the 3DS' third party pre-release build up, it already had two new Resident Evil games, Kingdom Hearts, and Phoenix Wright vs. Layton, all with actual in-game footage to show. Plus it snapped up Tekken, MH, and DQ not long after launch. Nothing outside of Sony's offerings on the Vita compares to those big names, and the Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, and Call of Duty logos mean nothing at this point.

Uhh, so you're saying sales matter more than actual enjoyment? Interesting...

I'm not someone who buys a platform for one year of games. I will buy a Vita for the games coming out in 2012, and the games I hope will come out in 2013, 2014, 2015, etc. For Vita to get to that point it's going to need to sell well, and have good sellers. Unfortunately, there's no system selling software announced. Sure some might say Call of Duty, but I have my doubts on if that even exists, let alone will be some big push for hardware.

OK, but other than the "handheld is doomed" scenario, Sony has already shown a ton of games actually running and playable on Vita months before launch. It's rare to see this many games on a brand new system.

And as much as I want to see Modern Warfare running on Vita, this is a new platform. If a killer app emerges, it might not be so predictable. Look at Monster Hunter for proof.

I found myself actually looking forward to Vita for the new properties for once.
Gravity looks amazing. Sound Shapes looks fantastic. Dragon's Crown dat ass looks to keep the soul of the D&D arcade games I spent so much time and money on as a kid.

The real challenge, I think, will be for Vita to carve out its own killer app. Each handheld seems to have had that ONE game that sends it into the stratosphere.

Maybe they have reasons, remember the E3 05 fiasco

I wasn't talking about looks specifically, more functionality, the whole package. When I said 'it looks like it'll be the best game system OS', the 'looks like' was there because I didn't want to say it is while it's not out yet. Since, you know, maybe the final thing will actually be a POS. But from what we've seen and heard it looks like it will be pretty great.

Today I went to this store where they had a bunch of demo 'fake' Vita models that are basically the real plastic outside but impossible to turn on/off, and with a sticker on the screen. Anyway, I played with it a bit, pressing the buttons and all that, and they felt great.. but the analog sticks are damn small. Like, really.. if you think about it for a second and look at the pics you will realize it, but they are barely about twice the size of the normal buttons, and that's quite small. Other than that, the screen was huge and overall felt 'expensive' and well done, almost like the Apple hardware.

The only thing I'm not 100% sure about are the analog sticks anyway, the 3DS slide pad felt better, but then again I only 'tried' them for like a minute.

Yes, my first shock was surprise tiny analogy sticks. I was play the pool game and seen not too bad with these controls.
But I want to more how it feel on FPS game. I'm wondering how sensitive movement is.

I played Uncharted and at first it was quite weird and a bit sensitive but then I got used to it
