AMD Radeon 7000 series to be unveiled Dec 5 - first with 28nm again

I really want to get an ATI GPU, but I can't. Their drivers are worse than Nvidia's IMO, and drivers make up a large chunk of why I buy these cards. Nvidia might take some time, but they are quality releases.

This is generally true, and the reason I've been considering switching from AMD for about a year now. I got a 6870 last year and have been generally happy with it, but there are some strange driver issues that don't seem to be present on nvidia. The only good thing about AMD's driver team is that they are quick with bringing out patches to new games, especially if there are issues with a big-name game.

They kinda have to. Nvidia always seem to release their damn drivers before the games hit, because they had time to test them and work out the kinks. AMD just stumbles around and hopefully get something out the door before release and that shit is usually broken, so they end up doing 2-3 iterations of that month's patch, a, b, c etc. And Nvidia also has SLI profiles in these drivers, AMD just says "Ha!" and releases the CF profiles a month later.

Doesn't help that CCC looks like something from a bad Frontpage 2000 project but that's just minor stuff I guess.

And the real 7690M was going to be a pretty decent chip.... too bad yields sucked.

So what's good with the laptop parts? Been eyeing this thread from afar and wondering what kinda good stuff I have to look forward to--

The fact that everyone still is relying on TSMC despite the fact that they are a constant cluster is just mind boggling.

So AMD done in the desktop market? if so free ATI please, Nvidia without competition would be a fucking disaster for PC gamers, just imagine Nvidia releasing one card at $799 and that's the only model on the market with no budget cards....

AMD has a closely linked fab in Global Foundries. Why can't there graphics division use them? Is GF just as bad or they just booked up?

Two years ago, everyone was saying Nvidia was done in the desktop market with all the issues leading up to the Fermi launch. As you can see, that didn't turn out to be the case.

Yeah, because that one card would just sell like mad. People buy budget cards because they can't afford high-end cards, not because they are trying to make a statement.

Maybe my opinion was a bit extreme but no competition still means that PC gamers gonna get fucked over IMO, just look at Madden the game is released in beta form and always have many bugs, before the NFL and EA made that deal Madden was hands down the best football game on the market, now they are fucking lazy devs..

Ah shit, mobile parts son. Apple is going to get fucked over by TSMC looking at two generations of horrible yields.

Which in turn is going to fuck over AMD/Nvidia even more since Apple will get priority on their parts. Apple used to use Samsung fabs right? That would explain the switch with all the patent fighting between the two.

See EphemeralDream's post. It means nothing. Some people like to sensationalize when company X or company Y temporarily falls slightly behind, but they're fairly even. Even this news isn't the end of the world. Only reason the thread was created and framed as is, is because irfan was trying to get one of his digs in at Nvidia. But from a realistic POV, both companies will be releasing quality products next year and good things will come to those who wait.

Little bit of column A and a little bit of column B.

I doubt 28nm desktop parts will be out by next summer even. The fab just isn't high-yield enough for either of those 2 players.

Ugh. Just thought of something? Don't the console manufacturer's run through them too? Could get pretty clogged if Nintendo and MS are both launching next fall.

Given the driver issues AMD/ATI continue to have. And have had for quite some time. I don't know why anyone would buy them and yes, I have owned severall ATI cards in the past.

dual core gpu's are going to have to be the norm coming up in the next few years if yields on 28nm and lower aren't good. The different fab companies have been having trouble for years.
3dfx, where are you?

What's happening? Both manufactors are doing rebrandings of mobile gpus... ah I see. I will wait for the dekstop cards before I jump on any conclusion. Like all should do.

The low-end mobile chips have been rebrands for at least 3 or 4 generations running. This isn't even surprising news out of either camp.

While I have had driver problems in the past with ATI cards (9800Pro comes to mind), I haven't had any problems with my 5850. The situation seems much improved, though the tools still aren't up to Nvidia's level. Of course, I usually only buy PC games after they've been on the market a while (i.e. cheap), so that might factor in to why I haven't seen any issues.

I honestly prefer Nvidia, personally, but when the 5850 first came out and I needed a new card, Nvidia didn't have anything in the price-range that could touch it.

This concerns me greatly. Dual GPUs are a headache that I always try to avoid.

I highly doubt 28nm is going into a console GPU design if the console is launching next year. NEC (according to the WiiU speculation thread, they may have something to do with its GPU production) may throw a wrench in that, but unless you want to pull a PS3 they'll be on more mature processes for a whole host of reasons.

Sooo.. Wait for new nvidia mobile cards.

NVidia's suffering similar headaches with new processes. Their true next gen architecture has been delayed until 2014.

What's with the insane hyperbole?

The launch of the 28nm Southern Islands architecture will happen soon enough, but it won’t be happening today. Ignore the product number—if you wanted to see new GPUs from AMD [cue Obi-Wan], these aren’t the GPUs you’re looking for.
Just because they launched mobile first doesn't mean they have abandoned desktops. What's with the end of world talk above?

*edit*
Am I the only person that read the article? Did I kill the thread with logic?

Yes. You're the only person who's read the article. Have you read the thread? Cause I don't think you have.
