Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Surprised with how much like they calling out JRPG staples, they didn't figure out the counterattacks with that boss. Seems like there's a boss battle like that in nearly every JRPG.

dat ice tackle

I guess I didn't have robo in my party in that battle cuz I remember it being tougher than that.

There is no choice of Rainbow sword, you always get it. You have to choose between Rainbow Dress vs 3 Rainbow Helms (take the helms! Get a Rainbow Dress from Charming Zeal in BO).

That reminds me - my biggest complaint about this game is you have to take Ayla to every single late-game boss so you can steal their shit >.<. Still, I'd give this game 10/10 any day.

Doh! How could I forget! And Ayla is boss! Marle for haste, Ayla for steal, then Ayla and Marle for Glacier Toss while Chrono cleans up. Win Win Win!

Oh geez, it's so blatantly obvious that Patrick remembers pretty clearly which NPCs you have to talk to and how you're supposed to be progress but he tries so hard to pretend like he doesn't by telling Ryan to do pointless stuff like talking to random NPCs that he has already talked to previously and pretending like he doesn't know which "hero" the NPCS are referring to.

Don't forget Ayla/Marle twin charm. Crono/girl is also better for dual techs. Volt bit + Ice Sword II are godly. Just need to battery Crono with ethers from Marle. Iceberg Toss also puts Marle on cool-down which is not really her role. Put her on haste roll for Ayla mixing in IS2.

That team is so broken. Not as bad as a gold stud
Magus
teams but pretty damn close.

You know what this game needs? A re-release on a modern downloadable platform (say, XBLA or PSN), with an eternally ramping boss rush mode with leaderboards. Let you guys take your knowledge of how to exploit these teams and really put them to the test.

It really is weird how much he is pretending not to remember.

I wish they would spend more time talking to people and looking around (intentionally, not from being lost). Chrono Trigger loses so much of its charm when you just focus on running forward as quickly as possible. Like, maybe Brono's mom would want to meet the crazy robot man you found? Her house was right there.

They haven't gone to the town on the southern part of the continent in 1000 yet either. I wonder if they'll even go to Porre.

I sure am glad I beat this game years before it ever occurred to me to construct team builds. I'm one of those OCD people who can't stand using any consumables at all until the final boss, so I usually always had someone who could heal. I don't even remember who I beat the game with the first time, maybe Chrono, Robo, and Ayla?

Hey, Ryan actually is starting to show a bit of intelligent play in this latest episode. Getting a bit accustomed to the menus and combat based on the fights in Ep. 10. It took him 5 hours on the saveclock, but there is hope.

Patrick is even starting to be a competent copilot by giving some constructive advice. If only he can curb the need to say "Ooh, I don't like them at all!" every goddamn 10 seconds.

I just finished Ep. 6, but PLEASE tell me they finally figure out that they can heal outside of using Tonics the whole goddamn time. I enjoy watching them but that shit infuriates me.

Yes, they do. What bothers me more is they are rolling in cash and they won't buy 99 potions and as many mid tonics as they can carry.

that bothers you? lol. You so don't need to do that in CT.

It's not the fact that you need to, it just looks nice. Also, Ryan never tops off his party's hp and I feel like that's because he doesn't have many potions. He's conserving something he could have 99 of and still have cash left over for gear.

Bring it on. Give me the DS version with dual auto-hastes on Crono/Ayla and gold stud
Magus
. I'll destroy planets.

Crono [Dreamseeker, Haste Helm, Nova Armor, Frenzy Band]
Ayla [Bronze Fist, Angel's Tiara, Prism Dress, Prism Specs]
Magus
[Dreamreaper, Prism Helm, Shadowplume Robe, Gold Stud]

-Dual auto-haste on Crono/Ayla
-Huge physical from Ayla with p-specs
-80% counter attack on Crono
-Status immunities on 2/3 (no confuse)
-High mag defense
-25% casting on
dark matter
- almost 20 possible casts
-Use elixers to boost

Try to keep up with that DPS before you take down my HP. Boom.

HAHA, Part 10 is so much better because they got lost in the forest in Part 4. Loved their reactions. "OHHHHH"

Why use
Magus
over Lucca or Robo? End game they both do more damage, especially Robo once he is tabbed. And Robo also happens to have the best heal spell in the game, not that it matters with megaelixers.

Complete screen AoE possibly 9999s from one of the fastest characters in the game vs. the two slowest characters in the game who can only be carried by dual techs / glitch setups.

EDIT:
FYI (level 30)
HP - MP - STR - ACC - SPE - MAG - EVA - STA - MDef
541 | 66 | 45 | 16 | 12 | 17 | 19 | 55 | 48 (Cr)
466 | 70 | 10 | 16 | 8 | 34 | 16 | 26 | 57 (Mar)
481 | 70 | 10 | 20 | 6 | 37 | 16 | 29 | 55 (Luc)
605 | 62 | 53 | 19 | 6 | 18 | 15 | 61 | 38 (Rob)
514 | 67 | 42 | 17 | 11 | 21 | 20 | 54 | 50 (Frog)
555 | 62 | 53 | 30 | 13 | 11 | 35 | 58 | 45 (Ayla)

Magus is level 37 start but is SPE 12.

Speed is irrelevant once you get to the point you can even use the stuff you are talking about, everyone will have been tabbed to max by then. No glitch setups or dual techs are needed for Robo or Lucca. Flare/Shock have higher damage multipliers than dark matter anyway.

Speed is NEVER irrelevant. You don't max after collecting those specific items unless you grind. High speed + auto-haste creates extra turns and ridiculous DPS. Pumping everyone full of tabs through multiple play-throughs is not realistic. Plus, how would flare/shock have higher DPS then
dark matter
when it maxes so easily with high mag offense from
Magus
(best in the game)?

Lucca and Robo are the worst two characters in CT. I can't make one argument of how those two are better then Ayla or Marle. Frog is the only one you can sort of discuss but he has better healing then Robo, better offense then Lucca.

I posted the best offensive team being item reliant. The best overall team is [Crono, Marle, Ayla]. That's triple haste in DS, 80% counter, dual tech spamming + AoE, and ridiculous healing (only need heal1 for full 999 with minor tab boosting) from Marle + full rez (100% health) for 4hp with gold stud. Godlike offense, defense, and unmatched speed. Shit would rip apart the robot and reprogram him into a walking tamagotchi while I put Lucca back into pre-school.

not everyone is crazy like that

I find this endurance run kind of interesting, because it really sheds some light on why modern games (specifically RPGs) are a lot more linear. I mean, Ryan couldn't even remember where the time gate in the Millennial Fair was. I'm enjoying the endurance run, don't get me wrong, it's just interesting to see a classic game being played by someone who doesn't know where to go and realizing just how freeform it really is.

Thanks to their quick look, I purchased Chrono Trigger DS to play for the first time. I vaguely remember trying it back in the SNES days but I never had the interest in rpgs back then. I'm on my way to the final boss, I've been playing it non-stop. Amazing game (duh). I shouldn't be surprised, but as someone who isn't very fond of JRPGs I was shocked to see how much I took to this game.

but then again, that's how classics roll isn't it?

Maybe I'll give some other JRPGs a try, any suggestions Gaf?

you could do a lot worse than Final Fantasy VI.

I can never keep my pre-FF7 Final Fantasies straight. Which is the one with the Spoony Bard that had an excellent DS re-release? Was that VI? IV? Ugh.

I loved that game. Although it's several order of magnitudes harder than Chrono Trigger.
Must've been iv only ff games with a re release were iv and iii.

The endurance run has made me order a copy of Chrono Trigger for the DS, not a huge jrpg fan but it seems to avoid my biggest annoyances, that being random battles, slow battle speed and annoying party members (the shy healer girl, cute animal thingy, loud obnoxious children)

Dragon Quest V is awesome (if you happen to stumble upon a copy).

Dragon Quest is pretty different from Chrono Trigger. I'm by no means an expert, but you can't play it nearly as sloppily as you can Chrono Trigger. Plus, there are random encounters.

FF6 might be a better choice because it's also pretty forgiving, and has an incredibly 'epic' plotline, even for modern JRPGs. Though I seem to remember a lot of "you'd never find this without a guide" hidden items.

Fairly certain Patrick read up on this or at least made an effort to refresh his memory after the embarrassing early episodes, that's the kind of guy he is.

I prefer that to them botching the game.

I hated Toriyama's art until I played Chrono Trigger. Now I'm quite partial to it in this game and in Dragon Quest.

But yeah, random battles might feel like a step backwards after CT.

DQV does have a relatively strong (generation-spanning) story in its favour, though.

Oh my, I hope they got through Heckran okay! I'll watch this in a few hours since I have to study. :O

Maybe I'll give some other JRPGs a try, any suggestions Gaf?
Before I answer, I have a few questions to ask you:

What kind of narratives are you looking for, and are you looking into turn-based RPGs where you select all commands at the beginning of a round and then execute (ex: Dragon Quest, Suikoden, Persona, SMT), or do you want something with Active Time Battle (any FF games post FF3 FC, Chrono Trigger which includes a time gauge on the UI that shows when you'll take your turn)? Or do you want something like the Tales games?

I generally like RPGs based on their skill/ability systems and battle systems... most of my favourites being listed here in this old post of mine, but I'll add Treasure of the Rudras' battle system and Arc Rise Fantasia's battle system because I really enjoyed tinkering with both of them and they were deeper than I had expected. If you're into battle systems and maybe managing stats heavily, check some of these games out.

If you're into story, I have a few games to recommend to you, but I want to know what kind of things you're looking for. The games I'm into based on narrative are rooted war and politics (ex: Genso Suikoden I and II, Radiant Historia (not really, but I got that vibe), Final Fantasy XII, Vagrant Story, etc), so if you're into that, I have a few things to recommend... though I can recommend stuff that isn't heavily invested in politics and war like Trails in the Sky, FFIX, Chrono Trigger, Mario and Luigi RPG 3, Paper Mario GCN, Persona 4, etc).

It's hilarious to see how accustomed to JRPG tropes I've become. It's weird to see people big into games who don't understand the ATTACK ME NOW SUCKER counter-attack thing.

everything feels backward after CT. :(

Chrono Trigger scholars: What is an acceptable level for tackling the endgame?

Just do the sidequests at the end. Most of them are cool and will set you up to take him down without too much trouble.
