The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

Probably a stupid question, but if I'm logged in to PSN on Vita and my friend is logged in on his PS3, will he be able to see what game I'm playing? I like presence data like that.

Yeah that will work exactly like PS3 does, and if he's in a Party room with you, you can see what he's doing there also.

Excellent. I look forward to trolling my brother with Vita FFX Presence Data and my message being 'FFX on the go!', or changing it to 'Blitzball on the train', 'Blitzball at work'.

He'll be totally fucked off.

Hook up to my car speakers, be a navigator, host group games in the car, entertain me while I'm driving alone, remind me if I go too fast (which is very often), ...

Sounds dangerous.

Probably Ninja Storm Generations for Vita

Unlikely. Sony's used JUMP Festa to announce games they'll publish in the past. While they could make an exception for a huge title (like a Monster Hunter or something), Naruto wouldn't classify as that.

It's clearly going to be a new anime IP.

There hasn't really been a big anime property that hasn't had its game rights snatched up. Unless you mean you think they'll launch a multi-media property. Which would be cool, and nice response to a certain tiny betrayalathon (of which Sony is actually helping with!).

It could be anything. This is SCEJ we're talking about. It could be some PSN-only PlayStation C.A.M.P. game, to Ape Escape 4, to a Bleach game, to even Monst...

It should not be dangerous if done right, or if I have other passengers in the car. Traditional games rely on display but many people will get motion sickness, or glare.

The dual sticks felt a little small at first, but they are very functional. Controls like the real DS3 except that L3/R3 are not supported. My whole family played with Vita in the SF Vita Hill event.

How did you like the screen. A question aimed to everyone who has had the opportunity to test the Vita.

It is as expected. Sharp and colorful. It is not as fine as 4S's retina display but close, and bigger. Most importantly, it's also smooth UI-wise and animation-wise. I didn't see ghosting or other artifacts.

The UI is not jerky/laggy like Android.

Not surprising. Resolution wise it IS Retina with the height hacked down to fit 16:9, then ballooned up to 5 inches. It's why it might not be too bad for reading, I thought the bigger problem with the Retina display was that the screen was fairly small, the resolution itself was more than fine.

And?

What did you play and how did the Vita controls feel?

My main highlight was Uncharted. Graphics are good and the nubs feel awesome. Touchscreen on front is a nice added bonus, didn't play anything that used back touchpad.

It was smaller than I thought, my interest has peaked up again.

Now that I have my Nokia Lumia 800 I kinda wished Sony went with this "Clear Black" technology. The screen is amazing.

Now that Naughty Dog has 2 teams, if one of them doesn't make a Vita game SCEA deserves Vita tanking.

As much as I'd like to see it, Naughty Dog needs to focus on high-spec insanity. If Team B is working on The Last of Us for PS3, then Team A really needs to be making Uncharted 4 for PS4.

I dont think Uncharted needs another entry. Naughty Dog should challenge themselves a bit and try something different

Okay, when The Last of Us wraps then that team should go into making a Vita game. ND used to use the excuse of not having enough staff to do a handheld and console game. That's obviously not a problem anymore.

I just don't think it's fair that Bend is stuck making someone else's games when the studio that created said property could've easily handled that.

Did the SoundShapes thing for VGA happen yet?

I tried SoundShapes, Little Deviants, LittleBigPlanet and Reality Fighter. SoundShapes is my top pick. I am really happy how it turns out. Very simple but magical. I love simplicity and elegance in general.

Anyone know what japan games have confirmed english options?

I'm just about to preorder a heap of games that's all.

Cheers

Josh

Ok, I've played much more stuff than I expected to, but I'll write it down when I come back home. For now I'll say that fire in Uncharted sucks.

pentile oled at 900 res is going to look bad close up especially text and lines. there are also black botches in light grey background. those hands on vita please help to keep a look out for this.
please to hear vita is using gpu acceleration for the ui, android ui is the most dated pos.

Wondering since I might be in Japan after the launch...will this be impossible to pick up at a store without having an early preorder? Plus, will the exchange rate really bite me in the ass, or would it be cheaper than importing from play asia or wherever?

does vita use pentile or rgb oled? it sucks for sony that they have to buy oled from samsung.

Only that they don't? Samsung has said maybe in a recent press release but they were not sure.
And whoever mentioned the Lumia, harrdiharr. :-P
PS: if your Android lags, get a better phone.

If it hasn't been posted, here is info from an interview on the PSBlog about the Vita version of MLB 2012.

PSB: What was the overall goal for the PS Vita version of MLB 12 The Show?

RR: We started out with a prototype phase. We had to decide on what kind of experience we wanted to give PS Vita players – it’s a handheld, so the play sessions are usually quicker. We thought about doing something totally different, maybe an arcade version of baseball. But we ultimately thought it made the most sense to recreate the entire PS3 experience on PS Vita. The Vita’s powerful enough to do that. So every single feature this year, from MLB 09, 10, 11, and 12 are all in the PS Vita version.

We’re also taking advantage of the unique hardware. You can use the front touch to navigate menus or select pitches, and you can use the back touchscreen for fielding and pick-offs.

Have you designed any special modes for PS Vita to accommodate those quicker play sessions?

Yep, that was important because research shows that handheld players play for 15 to 30 minutes, tops. We give you the ability to fast-play through a game by cutting out a lot of the presentation, the camera cuts, to shorten the length of games.

Will PS3 and PS Vita players be able to compete with each other online?

Not this year. It’s something that’s on our radar and we’ll investigate for next year.

Will the PS Vita version include multiplayer at all?

In some way, shape or form, yes. We’re still in the works on that.

What’s the release timeframe for the PS Vita version?

It’ll be release in a similar timeframe as the PS3 version. We haven’t nailed down the exact timing yet for either game, but you can expect it around the same timeframe as the PS3 version this spring.

Graphically, how would you say the PS Vita version stacks up to the PS3 game?
When you see it, I think you’ll be surprised. Vita’s a powerhouse. We have it locked at 30 frames per second, and the visuals are very comparable to the PS3 version. That’s something we just couldn’t accomplish on PSP.

I know some will complain about it being 30fps...but this is the first game for devs on this new hardware....maybe in a couple of years. But I'm sure it won't be that big of a deal once you start playing. But the fact that it will have most to all the features of the PS3 version should make most MLB fans happy.

does vita use pentile or rgb oled? it sucks for sony that they have to buy oled from samsung.

RGB most likely. RGB is a much better fit for the premium media experience Sony is trying to sell the Vita as plus I don't think the system's dpi is high enough for Pentile, anyway.

Thanks for posting this. The Show was actually the reason I got the PSP in the first place (which led to massive disappointment as it very quickly became just roster updates).

Sounds good, even if I am heartbroken about Pujols and irked about the constant interleague play due (I hate the DH, and I would prefer to pretend the AL just doesn't exist).

Of course the question is, what will the game be like once the PS4 comes out...just roster updates again (like the PSP suffered?)

It will probably be cheaper than import (given the usual import prices - remember, they too are affected by the rates) and I think that you should be able to pick it up somewhere.

Ok, now for my Roppongi event impressions.
First and foremost - I was expecting a LOT more people, but I guess a few extra games isn't enough to lure more people to the worst part of Tokyo if you think about gamers. On the other hand, the event is held in 5 parts of Tokyo at once and it's the second day, so yeah, it probably doesn't mean that Vita's already dead.

Overall impressions:
The buttons and analog sticks are a bit smaller than I'd like them to be and will need a bit getting used to, but they're not by any means bad. As for the rear touch pad, it annoyed me a bit, that I was pressing it unknowingly, because I didn't know that I should hold my hands on the grips on the sides. Anyway, isn't half bad. The screen reminded me of my iPhone 4, the picture is clear and really looks good. Also when playing Gravity Daze sun was shining directly at the screen at the effect wasn't as bad as I was afraid it would be, as I could clearly see what I'm doing.

So, I've tried:

BlazBlue - was fun, the d-pad isn't half bad when it comes to fighting games. The game itself is the same thing as the big version, so there's not much to write about it. Graphics looked good.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - everything felt like it should and I didn't even notice that the background is static. Graphics were crisp clear during the match, but I think the character select screen was a bit ugly.

Lord of Apocalypse - having cleared the PSP version 4 times I was really expecting this to look much worse. I think it's the game that surprised me the most in the positive way. This will definitely be my launch title.

Gravity Daze - bad things first - during the game there are jaggies on characters although it's not that bad. Other than that the game looks, feels and plays great. Yes, you can use buttons in conversations (although we already knew that from the dev walkthrough). And for all those wondering, you don't have to use the gyroscope to aim while levitating, the right stick works as well. To be honest, it's sometimes easier to use that than to tilt Vita, if you need to make a 180 degree turn or something. Also, the end of the boss fight, when after flicking my finger over the touchscreen the heroine did some badass attack blew me away. Will buy this day 1.

Uncharted - I'm not really a fan of Uncharted games. 2 was fun and all, but I'm kind of bored of climbing clearly visible platforms etc. Other than the fire, which really could use some work, the game looks quite good, although I have to agree with the "muddiness" of the graphics. It wasn't crisp clear as in other games. On the other hand, the amount of details etc. was great for a portable game.

Little Deviants - I've played 2 different minigames, but sadly they both involved the gyroscope (I wanted to test the rear pad one). That said, it was pretty fun. Given the low price (2000 yen, as opposed to normal 5-6k), I'll probably buy it.

Dark Quest - lack of some kind of dash etc. made the boss fight a bit tedious. Wouldn't buy it for the full price, but I guess if you can't get enough of hack and slash games, it's not that bad. Still had a kind of half baked feeling to it. I wasn't impressed.

Monster Radar - I seriously don't understand why someone would buy this thing. As opposed to other demos on the event, instead of playing the game, it was more listening to an explanation of some dude, who introduced all the features. Meh, catching monsters by going to certain spots (or buying items in the in-game store which extend player's reach up to 3000 km, you get money by selling your monsters) and being able to pet them and give them toys so they grow bigger isn't really my kind of thing. The process of catching the monsters boils down to finding them with the camera and touching them to use the net. Meh.

Dynasty Warriors NEXT - yes, the graphics is good. But don't be fooled, I think it had a bit less on screen units than the big version (still was much better in that aspect than Dynasty Warriors PS2 multiplayer). I'm bored to death by DW, so I didn't play to the end, but I guess it'll be a great title for series fans. Yeah, using the touch screen controls to rip through wave of enemies was pretty fun.

Ragnarok Odyssey - my biggest disappointment. The graphics looks clear but there aren't really many details there. Also, the battle system seems to be more shallow than the one in LoA and MH. Overally, it was pretty boring and I think I won't buy it after all...

Wipeout 2048 - I forgot how hard the Wipeout games were. During my first race I fell of the track so many times that I thought I'm playing the burning lap mode. Well, that was until all other racers passed beside me. Anyway, looks great and is pretty fun to play. I didn't test the other control types, but it seems that you can race tilting the console and there's one more there. Don't know the details, sorry.

Tales of Innocence R - the graphics were crisp, but because of that it was easy to see how simple everything is. The models, the background, it looks like a DS game played on an emulator which does a good work with bumping the resolution. Also, I think there wasn't any voice acting (I skipped all the scenes to be sure to make it to the end of the demo version, as I've had about 10 minutes for each game).

Reality Fighters - the fighters looked much better than I thought they will, and the fights were very flashy. Didn't make my own guy, so I don't know how good it is at recreating faces, but it was better than I thought.

Monkey Ball - it was Monkey Ball, not really much to say about that. The graphics were crisp clear although lacked a bit detail, but that's not what the game is about. Tilting the console to move the stage worked as it should.

To wrap it up. I thought the games would look a bit better then they did, but in the end I won't cancel my Vita preorder. Also, if you have any questions about the games I've played or the system ask away, but let me say that I didn't have a chance to play with the XMB.

Soo... Don't know if this was discussed yet but there is a PS[P] Vita out in the wild, somewhere in a cab. Thanks to deadmau5, after the VGA event I would presume?
