In other news, Malkin is 4th in points now, second in points per game behind Giroux (I'm not counting Crosby). His knee still hurts him a bit but it's getting better and it's clear he's finding his stride. He's had 12 points in his last five games, I expect him to be leading by January.
Rest Crosby until the playoffs and ride a motivated Malkin until then?
I said it before the season started and I'll still stand by it, Malkin can lead this team to the Cup. The last time Malkin was motivated he won the Conn Smythe. He kinda drifted along these past two years and was never really in the scoring race but now he's got that fire in his belly again. He's clicking really well with Neal and Kunitz, he plays better defensively with each passing game it seems (I saw him make plays in our end this game that I don't think I've ever seen him make) and he's only going to get better as his knee stop bothering him. If our defense can get healthy (I'd say about 60% of the goals scored on us this past month have been due to a bad play by an AHL call-up) and find its rhythm, we'll be a pretty badass team.
As for Crosby, I've considered him a cool bonus this entire season, it's sad but he's just not part of our core right now. If he plays? Fantastic. If not? Oh well. I hope we can get back to Crosby being a reliable factor in our schedule but that just hasn't been the case for over a year now.
And HBO captured all of it. Can't wait for that episode of 24/7.
Gonna be great material for that show. Also nice contrast with Philly.. Pronger being out for the season and losing 6-0.
Crosby's kind of like the joker in a pack of cards. I think I have to start looking at him playing for the Pens in this way for the time being. :-/

I disagree. No healthy Sid, no Stanley Cup. Malkin won that Conn Smythe because teams put their top d-men on Sid which allowed Malkin the opportunity to exploit weaker d-men and non-checking lines.

Apparently Time Warner Cable might be dropping the MSG network which will leave me with no way to watch Sabres games. My only other option would be DirecTV (no Fios here) and after some issues I had with them in the past I vowed to never give them any more money.

I think a lot of the feeling of ownership, as you say, is due to the fact that basically every Jets fan back then never wanted him to leave in the first place. I know how angry he was at first at the club for trading him, but honestly it was better for him anyway. I am glad he has mostly stayed with an organization that has treated him well. I can't really comment too much on his stays with the Avs and Sharks, since at that point I was barely following hockey. All I know is that he seemingly did not stay in both locations long and became a Duck again after. I know I was very pleased when the Ducks won the cup and he got a ring for it.
I did not get the signs that I saw that said "We Forgive you." Forgive him for what? abiding by his contract and actually going through with the trade? Much like the title in the Deus Ex OT thread on NEOGAF, He never asked for that. With how he was suddenly traded and we never saw him again... last night was some type of closure for us. Albeit some 15 years later.
Other than his time here, he's basically always associated as an Anaheim Duck to me. I'm so glad in that way since, could you imagine him as a Coyote? Having to go through the whole drama of potentially having the team move again? He likely would have just retired instead.
The papers and media here have been filled with stories with Selanne and his family. I saw a picture of his wife and kids and man, his oldest son really looks like him.
Basically though, I think all the fans here wish him well and are thankful that we got to see him one last time. There are always going to be extremists though, as you've seen, Dastardly.
Malkin on his game can make any defender in the league look like a dumbass, especially when has good wingers and a defense as offensively aggressive as ours is this year. With Staal on track for easily his biggest year in goals (if he could get healthy :|) and our bottom two lines scoring almost as much as our top two, I don't think goal production would suffer too much with Sid out. We're 4th in the league in Goals For right now, I think it's pretty clear that we can score without Sid. Malkin's been our top line center for the majority of this season and he's really starting to produce.

The Pens will be fine as long as Malkin stay healthy.
With the way Malkin's been revving up lately, I'm not sure if the Pens would absolutely need Sid to win the Cup, but a healthy Crosby would definitely up Pittsburgh's chances.
The playoffs are a different story, though. I'm more concerned about our defense being healthy than anything else at the moment. Haven't heard a peep about Letang in a while.

They will easily make it in even without Sid. All I'm saying is that the playoffs is an entirely different beast. Teams will focus solely on Malkin come playoff time if there's no Sid. Sid's presence alone gives Malkin more space and time to do his thing.

They're solid grinders who have also put up solid offensive numbers this season. Can't ask for more than that. Chicago's probably a little more skilled on their first two lines, but the Pens can run with anybody.

Cooke has 7 goals this season. Don't knock the guy. And I'll put the Pens' work ethic up against any team in the league. It doesn't matter if your name is Danny Briere or Pat Kane, if you're getting outworked in the corner for pucks.
Just wait and see, man. Once the Pens at least get their D back and healthy, you will shit your pants at the fierceness and compete level of Pascal Dupuis. He's got more goals than Patrick Kane, Zetterberg, Cleary, Holmstrom, JVR, and the same number of goals as Briere. Hell, he's only 1 behind Datsyuk. Not bad for a guy making far less than all of those guys.

I saw one sign like that and to be honest, I don't think whoever made that sign knew what they were talking about. Every other sign was a mix of "we love/miss you" and "we want you to come back". There was a good one saying that at his age, he needs a KANE and a WHEELER to assist him.
No, that's not it. Winnipeg doesn't love Teemu because he set that record as a Jet. Winnipeg loves Teemu because of the excitement he brought to the city as a result of breaking that record, at a time when the franchise was having some serious problems. He went further than that by being active in the community and well known as a class act. Winnipeg's a relatively small place. Those things get noticed and recognized.
Let the record sit in Phoenix. It's pretty cynical to dismiss the emotion because of some technicalities of statistics and to who they belong.

Hah! Why would that automatically happen? Crosby was there against Montreal, and Pens lost. Pens fans are so freakin' pretentious, everything is owed to them.
Wilson needs to make the playoffs or he's gone.
Let me expand. Burke won't fire him if they're still in the hunt. If they suddenly go into a long tailspin and lost 7-8 in a row he may fire him before the season is up.

D'aaww, Sugarcakes... No need to be feisty. Besides Connolly, who are your PK specialists (forwards)? I'm not talking about who you put on the PK, but who's reputed as being great killers. I can't remember any particular players.
It was tongue in cheek. Defensemen usually don't hit their peak until their late twenties. Lots of time for Schenn, though I'd fear the Leafs fucked up his development a bit by rushing him.
Dupuis has been the best penalty killer on the team, but he's a borderline NHL player at even strength. We have Steckel who can win a lot of draws, but he isn't particularly good at penalty killing.
What worries me is that Wilson's PK has been near the bottom of the league for years despite having a different roster with different PK players every year. Freddie Sjostrom, for example, was lauded in Phoenix and NYR as being a premier penalty killer, but when he came to Toronto, he was no better than anyone else. I think it's time for an entirely new system.
