Fall 2011 Anime Thread |OT2| The Tampire is Coming

Just a note for Android people: The Crunchyroll app when on ICS is a buggy, barely functional, ugly mess. You can still watch, but landscape is forced, buttons are squashed/missing, and it takes more work than it should. This definitely isn't done.

You got a Galaxy Nexus Tuna?

Is this a trick question?
Maybe.

for me it's laughing at just how awful most of it is. no different from watching a really bad film tbqh.
>>implying wonzo doesn't play with himself while watching hentai
Oh, uhm... I should probably tell you I didn't really watch it for the plot. I'm sure it's compelling stuff, though.
Too late, already fapping!
I remeber that I watched La Blue Girl for the plot and jokes.

C'mon guys, this is the place to talk about classy titles like White Shadow and Pop Chaser. You know, real anime.

Only 20 episodes through but he is such a terrible character. I don't think I will ever like him.

I really don't think anyone considers YuruYuri better than Aoi Hana. YuruYuri is closer to Milky Holmes than to Aoi Hana, anyway.

I don't like comparing apples to oranges, but apple is the superior fruit. And Aoi Hana is an orange.

Who doesn't skip posts by bronies?

I am not a brony. But you are. I can tell you don't read your own posts though.

[Space Battleship Yamato 21-22]

You know, there's a fine line between "We will eventually have to face the enemy" and "The enemy has set up the time and location of a battle, lets go meet them there". Actually, it's not a fine line at all, it's leagues apart in terms of sensible strategy.

I know this is a 'child's cartoon' but there was lots of terrible strategy from all sides:
Kodai repeated taking the ENTIRE defensive fleet away from the Yamato to attack some obvious distrcation, rather then sticking close to the Yamato.

Kodai taking in the whole defensive fleet in at once to refuel, leaving no one to guard the Yamato.

Designing a super-special missile to take out the Yamato's strongest weapon but having it take FIFTEEN MINUTES to explode.

On the plus side, there was plenty of classic WWII aircraft carrier vs WWII aircraft carrier combat and even a bit of submarine on submarine action. Good times!

Even if the actions of the combatants might be rather irrational at times, every single encounter appears to have both sides actually planning a strategy, which usually involves a unique tactic or item or device that won't be re-used in another episode. The battle will then pivot on how well that strategy works. Unlike say, large scale combat in Gundam (the originals) which just seems to have a hell of a lot of units flying around somewhat chaotically.

Bye, Hirano!

Upgrades are always welcome. Was already hyped for this show but replacing harlot Hirano with my goddess Maaya raises the hype meter some more.

so like

i wanna start watching Fate/Zero

is the previous anime required watching before getting into it, or am i cool with just starting this as is? (sorry if this has been brought up before)

You don't need to watch FSN first, in fact you might be better off not having seen it as you leave yourself for more surprises.

Working'!! 11: Inami and Takanashi-kun episodes are great. Haters keep on hating.

Only one more episode. :(

:(

Inami is the best. Takanashi is okay, I like him best when he was
all tsundere not jealous but I'm jealous of some NTR action with bro Yamada and Inami.

New Avatar, I had to make it.

Non-Gintama watchers can scratch their heads as to why Gntama watchers will find it amusing.

They're so random though. Some poor bastard got a shot of a pair of legs.

I've got a film clipping of a candle from one of the Endless Eight episodes of Haruhi somewhere.

The most amusing I've seen were the with the second Macross Frontier movie, though, where some people were getting clips from the anti-piracy advert that played before the movie.

Hahahahaha... oh man, that's just sad.

C3 - 12

Hahaha, did they really think this was good enough to end with a sequel setup? Probably the best joke that there was from this show.

I do hope it sells decently enough that they can hire someone competent for the writing/series composition of their next project though. Such awesome direction shouldn't go to waste like this.

No, it's a train wreck and not the fun kind.

The first 1/3 of it is really great, the rest is best forgotten with the movie later taking a huge dump on the series.

While first 1/4 of brotherhood is mediocre, the rest of the 3/4 is great and a lot fun to watch.
The original just handles the brothers’ back story and nina arc way better then brotherhood.

fma manga >>>fma b >>>>>>fma a

Coming in late to agree with this. All of this.

edit: Well except the last part but only because I can't (haven't read the manga)

I think it should get one. I just realized the ending wasnt even that strong, unlike other good anime that leave one thinking or in shock for a few hours or days after watching, this just ended and I was like, okay, season two or whatever. I guess they wrote it either for an S2 or an OVA or something. Do adaptations of light novels usually end this way?

So AnimeGAF, what titles are still sitting on your backlog that you've been meaning to get around to, but haven't had the time? Watching Otaku no Video lets me cross off a title on my backlog that has been irking me for awhile.

For reference I still really want to get through:

Captain Harlock and the original Space Battleship Yamato.

Of course, those are just the major classics, I have far more titles to consider, but they're at the top of my list.

On DVD I've got Iczer-1 and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya right now, hoping to get through those over the winter break. I'm gonna be getting the third Revolutionary Girl Utena DVD volume soon, though, so I might try marathoning that later.

Streaming, I need to catch up Naruto and Bleach and finish off Zeta Gundam. Might check out Horizon too, see if it's at least enjoyably bad.

[Getter Robo Armageddon 1 - 1998]

getterroboarma1.jpg

The Yasuhiro Imagawa style direction is strong in this opening episode. Dramatic poses, close-ups, multiple plots weaving together without the show explicitly telling you what's going on and a heightened sense of drama (you know, with dramatic lightning) give this OVA an amazing start. I'd say this episode is better than the first 25 episodes of GaoGaiGar combined.

The december is pretty much a nostalgia/retro month for me. And with Oh! My Goddess I have a newcomer for my list of old animes are better.

You're Under Arrest! - File 6

ybqHK.jpg

Hangover Natsumi is so adorable...

but it's pretty hard to accept the quality loss of the tv anime. I would kill everyone here for a You're Under Arrest! anime with OVA quality.

The Adventures of Mini-Goddess - 1-3

IXXUY.jpg

Mini Goddess is such an underrated show. But a show about chibi-Urd and Skuld with Belldandy as sidekick character and some absurd adventures, sounds like the perfect anime formula.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Enjoyable, but stupid.

The only real issues I had with the movie were the train crash scenes. If you know the brakes on your bike are out, and you're speeding down a hill, and a train is coming that you're going to crash into, why do you continue to head straight onto the train tracks? And this didn't happen once, but twice. I don't understand why you wouldn't just crash into the ground or something instead of suiciding into the train.

I also got bored a few times. It felt like Makoto was never really learning anything, or the movie was taking too long to move to something else.

Blasphemy how can you not love this stupid movie.

yep that was dumb, the obvious thing to do is to crash on the ground

How did you find
the later part of the movie with plot twist and all
?

[Space Battleship Yamato 25]

Peace is also pretty shitty, apparently. Damn, this sure is grim.

Also, when people make statements like that or make those kind of choices it's best to (gently) knock them out. There's a lot of symbolic positioning triumphing over rational decision making.

I haven't watched the movie recently, but don't they try to crash into the ground and it kills some innocent bystander instead?

It didn't really feel like a twist to me.

In the room when she first got her powers, we were given a glimpse of the person, and it looked familiar. Once we got the reveal it felt natural. I wasn't shocked, didn't reject it as stupid or forced or anything. The drama in the frozen crowd scene was stupid, because it didn't make sense why he had to leave, but it didn't negatively affect my view of the movie. And he said from the start he was supposed to go back but stayed longer than he meant to, so him ultimately leaving was fine, too. That promise to wait was a little suspect, but not unexpected honestly.

Really, the train crashes were my only problems with the movie.

I haven't watched the movie recently, but don't they try to crash into the ground and it kills some innocent bystander instead?

You know, that would have been awesome. Especially because she likely wouldn't accept that, and would then have a reason for staying the course.

What's the difference between this and this?

Kodocha Save Editions with different box arts.

The funimation store shows the art of one and links to the other at rightstuf.

If that SAVE thing stays on the white boxes, it obstructs faces.

That save sticker in my experience with other save releases is a sticker on the wrapping, and wont be on the box. The one with Sana in the red dress was the original release and has thin packs. They likely tossed the sticker onto to do the save edition with. The other one is probably a single DVD case sized package with all the disks.

C³ - END

A second season? Of this? HAHAHAHAHA

Not quite conclusive, but not as in-conclusive as many anime before it.

Well that was erm... a show of two halves, one half of psychotic people going psychotic, the other was put simply trashy fanservice (albeit very tame compared to Maken-Ki), all happening in each and every episode.

Hahahahaha... oh man, that's just sad.

I was almost disappointed when mine just had Ranka (well, two Rankas, technically) on it. Almost. Although it's the Sheryl ones which where reselling for the most on Yahoo Auctions.

Speaking of film clippings, the LE of Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below came with one as well - could that be the only film where people didn't complain about getting scenery shots? I can imagine a film clip of some nice clouds being way more highly sought after than ones with characters for that movie...

[Anne of Green Gables 49 - End]

I can't believe it's all over. These Takahata shows are emotionally draining to get through, I'll tell you that. It's not hard to see why this work is so widely regarded, it's an excellent series through and through, no doubt thanks in part to the excellent source material.

Happily it's a show that I can recommend to everyone, there's nothing in there that's really objectionable or poorly made or anything like that. It's just a character drama, one that's more intelligent than most we see made into anime these days.

I'm pretty excited to check out Heidi at some point, so I can complete the World Masterpiece Theatre/Takahata trifecta of awesomeness (as it's officially known).

You're Under Arrest always looks pretty, I wonder if I'd like it?

Moribito 1-6
Damn, this is some quality story telling. The slower bits remind me of GITS:SAC's where they're slow, but still engaging and well written.

I've almost enjoyed everything involving the Imperial Assassins more than the actual Balsa and Chagum parts. That is to say, their encounters together have been the most memorable moments thus far. Good to see the smaller time villains, that are most often just psuedo important characters that are quickly dispatched by the main character, become a little more human and fleshed out.

I see you've gotten around to that quickly upon hearing that it's directed by Kenji Kamiyama! Not that there's anything wrong about doing that, Moribito is a great series.

Lol. Amazing.

Also the funniest Gintama arc yet is airing next! I can't wait.

You got a Galaxy Nexus Tuna?

I wish. I'm on an Evo4G alpha build. It's a tad bit sluggish when it comes to the launcher, and the status bar icons are fuzzy, but it's all good otherwise. I was actually surprised to see a completely different crunchyroll app when I booted it up. It might think I'm on a tablet.

Gundam Age 11

A break next week :(. Decent episode, I loved the middle song and montage of relaxation and strategizing. I guess one of the animators is a massive fan of Flit x Yurin though, which was nice.

The Adventures of Mini-Goddess - 4&5

DOylA.jpg

The both space-rat episodes were awesome. I feel more and more ashamed that I waited so long to read and watch Oh! My Goddess and all related stuff.

You're using an Evo 4G ICS alpha on a tablet? Damn, you're pretty hardcore with the Android custom ROMs. Is it a Touchpad?

I can try downloading the Crunchyroll app on a Tuna and see what happens. I'll try to stream something. You should be glad you can flash back to Gingerbread. Many apps are incompatible with ICS right now, including the BBC News official app strangely enough. I'm going through BBC News withdrawals. :|

Nah, not a tablet, an actual Evo4G. It's old and tired, but this thing has been a steady parter, still looks great in terms of design, and I don't have the money to upgrade right now, lol.

But yeah, try seeing if the app works for you on the Tuna. I was wondering if it was an issue with my alpha build, but everything else runs fine. I've heard of apps seeing ICS and defaulting to their tablet/honeycomb interfaces, even when on it's ICS on a phone, so that might be the issue.

Working!! 12

HNNNNnnggg. Inami episodes are best episodes. Also contains Yamada.

All my Friends 11

WOOT. Good end.
Did not see that coming, I thought they'd draw it out a bit longer. Glad for Yozora.
