Hopefully the implications are positive - that North Korea will relatively peacefully reunite with South Korea over the next decade.

I saw a blurb about it a few seconds ago on CNN. I only caught the taill end of it; they were just showing his picture and went on to the next story

EDIT: OK. CNN breaking.

According to South Korea media, he is dead. North Korean TV is simply displaying a picture of Kim Jong Il.

Kim Jong Il, the second-generation North Korean dictator who defied global condemnation to build nuclear weapons while his people starved, has died, Yonhap News reported. He was 70.

The news came in a radio broadcast at noon local time, Yonhap reported, citing North Korea’s official media. Kim probably had a stroke in August 2008 and may have also contracted pancreatic cancer, according to South Korean news reports.

Pretty sure his third son will assume leadership now. His other two sons reportedly fell out of favour with Kim Jong Il over the last 10 years , from what I recall.

He probably died some time ago, I'm sure the government wasn't itching to get the news out ASAP.

Why am I hearing about this on GAF first? So weird.

Oh and, just for kicks.

I saw this on 2ch a few minutes before this thread, but damn, GAF is fast. It took quite a while longer for the various big news sites to post the information.
