pretty much. i still get looks based on what i buy. a cashier flipped her shit when i pre-ordered pokemon black after i told her it was for me. its kinda funny, but also insulting.
This entire thread is painful. I don't really like the people throwing insults around, and I don't really like the people seeking attention. And I'm sure somebody doesn't like me.
Why can't we just all act like decent human beings and get along?

My girlfriend has been on Xbox Live for six years. Her gamertag doesn't announce she's a girl. Her bio doesn't announce she's a girl. Nor does she have [GIRL] as her clan tag in anything. The only thing that reveals she's a girl is her avatar.
And guess what? She never gets bothered by anyone, even when she voice chats (aside from the random dick pictures she got on Uno back when that place was ChatRoulette beta). It's only the ones who obnxiously advertise they are a girl that get harassed. And rightfully so.
The problem is that this women put so much emphasis on their gender and they have a hobby that is pretty unusual for girls. I couldn't care less if you are a woman or a man, I know plenty of "hardcore" female gamers.
What ticks me off is the double standard these "girl gamers" have. They want the attention for being girls who play games, but when they get negative feedback they get mad.
And another tip; Don't use a name like GirlHardcoreGamerSuperCute. That's just asking for it. It's like if I had a name like BigOleBlackFlappyManDick.
the problem with the whole "girl gamers are harassed" thing to me atleast is that you really can't prove it is any worse than what other groups get. For every story I hear about people leaving games when they hear a girls voice, I've experienced twice as many games where that doesn't happen.
I've been called fag. I've been called nigger. I've been called a bunch of shit on xbox live. Everyone I know has a similar story of putting up with people's bullshit. I don't assume everyone there is racist or has something against black people. You ignore the assholes, because really in the grand scheme of things they don't mean much and move on.
A lot of women just can't get over the fact that the internet is rough or something. There is really nothing you can do to combat it, except demand better moderation, which I've have never heard any female group doing. It starting to come off as if being a gamer girl/girl gamer whatever you are require to become some type of internet feminist, reminding us over and over again that there are assholes on the internet
As if those normal men can do anything about it
, and woe the women who play with us.
Also let me add that xbox live is notorious for this. Almost every story I hear involves the 360 service. If this harassment is that big a deal, maybe it's time to speak up not as gamers but as consumers and demand that MS do something to address the issue. Hell they are just about to release a new console. Now might be the best time. Granted that isn't as easy as complaining online but it might go farther.
All it honestly takes is one dude to just ruin my night if he's really adamant about being a shit. But that's why I don't even use a mic if I'm flying solo and otherwise play in larger groups of people who won't insult me. I wish I could find it but there actually used to be a site or blog women could submit harassment over xbox live to.

Come play some MOBAs, girl, we don't harass our beautiful babies over here, girl. I'll make love to you if you want me to or just give you constant feeding if that's what you need, girl.
Some of the worst harassment I'd get would be post game lobby because I'm pretty good at Halo and "omg a girl beat me at the vidya" bullshit was inevitable. The worst thing I ever got was a message on xbox live telling me to go get raped. Ruined my evening.
Because I don't do that at all, I'll just talk on the god damn mic and hear a slew of fucking insults. I play with a unisex name for fucks sake and I stopped talking on mic out of a party because there was always some idiot who would call me a faggot or <insert gendered insult here>.

Again, adding 'girl' to your name might feel empowering but it is not. I don't feel the need to add my gender to my nick or handle, now do I? As for 'pwning noobs', way to show us that you are stuck in the mid-00's. The message is here, but the delivery leaves much to be desired.
Adding 'sexy' to it is another mis-step. I'm not the one to claim that rape victims are at fault because they dress sexy, but if you wanna do something against the misoginy in CoD or Halo, why don't you start with scrapping the 'sexy' from your nick. It's sad that we live in a world that a word like that sets the CoD-fans ablaze, but fanning the flames does nothing for your cause.
And thus they are getting called out on their delivery, not the message. Try again without emphasis on either girl, gamer, and sexy.
No it's not. I don't really like the direction of the video but a lot of the shit they say isn't wrong. There is a fucking reason I don't use my mic on xbox live when I'm not in a party. It's a case of as a woman I don't feel like being fucking disrespected every time I open my mouth because some little shit was never taught proper manners and decides to call me whore, dyke, fat cunt, slut, tell me to make a sandwich or tell me to go get raped.

Then you obviously do not fit my description of "obnoxiously advertising they are a woman". So what's the beef with what I said? It obviously wasn't aimed towards people like you.

Fostering the mentality that a woman who is being an "attention whore" deserves derision along gender lines doesn't fucking help me and mine. That's the fucking problem.

Girls are the only ones that are insulted and called fags: FACT
Thicker skin is probably the way to go rather than trying to change insane people. Or do like I do and don't talk on the mike. The crazies inevitably will go after the "different" one and it could be a girl or black or accent. The only reason guys don't get as much usually is because it's spread around because we're part of the majority.

I don't mean to come off as callous but this kinda goes to my point. I don't see any reason to believe that women are treated that much worse than men here. I've been called names. I've had messages and threats. You delete it and move on.
It's well recognized now that the best online experience comes from from playing with people in some type of community. Playing with random strangers, especially with a competitive game like Halo is like swimming with sharks. Eventually you get bit.
To be fair "Owning someone" is also a phrase. The fault could be with the person that put the text on the video because that is not how you pronounce "pwn."

Dude I just play without a mic precisely because I don't want my night of kickin' ass in halo to be ruined. But the fact remains the times I decide to use it, there has been some nastiness that is the very reason I stopped.

I'm not saying others are sans trash talk but that the trash talk is aimed AT my gender. I've been called an asshole, this didn't bother me. The slew of gendered insults, told I must be fat and or ugly because I was a girl who was decent at a game, told to go the kitchen and make sandwiches? These are all directed at the fact that I am a woman, and they're more common place than apparently some people are willing to admit. OR only thrown at "attention whores" who deserve it. Ugh.
Agree. You are a gamer, who cares if your a girl. Some women announce it to the world and draw attention to themselves and act like its some sort of miracle.
Nowadays it's strange if you don't game in some fashion.
My wife plays CoD and just goes into party chat with friends because random shit from ppl is annoying. Party chat is a lifesaver

I've definitely heard when talk about getting it constantly and immediately when they enter a chat every time basically which is quite a bit above average. Unfortunately this won't change through some sort of open dialogue because the people discussing and thinking about these issues aren't the ones doing it.

Define flip out? Yeah there are times when I've bought something that people were surprised, but it's never been something that didn't come off as a normal human reaction. So i pre-order a Pokemon or an obscure jrpg. I don't assume the clerk is focusing on me being black or short when he rings it up. More like surprise that a guy my age still plays pokemon and rpgs with loli chicks on the damn cover.
Assholes are a bad thing. I also don't like idiotic attention whorism. But one does not justify the other. Nor is one the reason for the other.
I am not that much of an online player but I usually disable microphone and people's voices. But mostly because I don't like hearing them than because I am afraid of insults. But that is certainly a bonus. People are certainly more kind in PC Team Fortress 2 than the experiences people are sharing here.
Well, if you mean people excusing it as attention whores getting what they deserve and stuff, yeah that's pretty terrible. There's no excuse, these people are just giant assholes. They pick a reason to harass someone and go with it. Like I said, any difference is a reason and they'll go with it (including not talking on the mic by the way )
If you are talking about hand waving as in it's not a problem though, it's not so much not a problem as it is an unsolvable problem except by avoidance so there's nothing to be done. Always more assholes in the world even if you ban some.

multiple second guessing attempts, then a slack-jawed look of nonbelieving. as for the rpg thing, why the hell should that be a damn issue, because im older, im all of a sudden not supposed to be fond of games that i grew up with? it didnt seem to be an issue with the guy before me, so why the issue with me?

I don't agree with the "women who put a focus on being women should know better" defense. That just seems desperate and is probably based on that "Gurl Gamer" meme that doesn't really exist.
However you really shouldn't be surprised you get shit talk focused on you being a woman. You can only call someone who is beating you an asshole so many times. These type of insults are born of feelings of inferiority and anger. They latch onto anything to give them ammo. If you had a hispanic accent they would probably make wetback jokes.
I don't believe they are more common place. I believe you notice it more because you are the butt of those jokes. If I judged xbox live by the crap I heard, I would think the entire service is ran by stormfront, and it's just a cesspool of neo-nazi's.

I mean the bold, it really does not help the rest of us. The second paragraph I've mostly come to terms with, but the idea that people call themselves decent and think it's alright to levy those insults at someone they consider an "attention whore" is a fucking laugh. I just don't want to hear it at all and I've told people I play with as well.

Why don't you believe me? There is a reason I go sans mic. And being good at the game actually ups the chance I'm going to be insulted. Butthurt egos and all that.
