My girlfriend has been on Xbox Live for six years. Her gamertag doesn't announce she's a girl. Her bio doesn't announce she's a girl. Nor does she have [GIRL] as her clan tag in anything. The only thing that reveals she's a girl is her avatar.
And guess what? She never gets bothered by anyone, even when she voice chats (aside from the random dick pictures she got on Uno back when that place was ChatRoulette beta). It's only the ones who obnxiously advertise they are a girl that get harassed. And rightfully so.

The problem is that this women put so much emphasis on their gender and they have a hobby that is pretty unusual for girls. I couldn't care less if you are a woman or a man, I know plenty of "hardcore" female gamers.
What ticks me off is the double standard these "girl gamers" have. They want the attention for being girls who play games, but when they get negative feedback they get mad.
And another tip; Don't use a name like GirlHardcoreGamerSuperCute. That's just asking for it. It's like if I had a name like BigOleBlackFlappyManDick.

All it honestly takes is one dude to just ruin my night if he's really adamant about being a shit. But that's why I don't even use a mic if I'm flying solo and otherwise play in larger groups of people who won't insult me. I wish I could find it but there actually used to be a site or blog women could submit harassment over xbox live to.

Some of the worst harassment I'd get would be post game lobby because I'm pretty good at Halo and "omg a girl beat me at the vidya" bullshit was inevitable. The worst thing I ever got was a message on xbox live telling me to go get raped. Ruined my evening.

Because I don't do that at all, I'll just talk on the god damn mic and hear a slew of fucking insults. I play with a unisex name for fucks sake and I stopped talking on mic out of a party because there was always some idiot who would call me a faggot or <insert gendered insult here>.

Again, adding 'girl' to your name might feel empowering but it is not. I don't feel the need to add my gender to my nick or handle, now do I? As for 'pwning noobs', way to show us that you are stuck in the mid-00's. The message is here, but the delivery leaves much to be desired.
Adding 'sexy' to it is another mis-step. I'm not the one to claim that rape victims are at fault because they dress sexy, but if you wanna do something against the misoginy in CoD or Halo, why don't you start with scrapping the 'sexy' from your nick. It's sad that we live in a world that a word like that sets the CoD-fans ablaze, but fanning the flames does nothing for your cause.
And thus they are getting called out on their delivery, not the message. Try again without emphasis on either girl, gamer, and sexy.

Thicker skin is probably the way to go rather than trying to change insane people. Or do like I do and don't talk on the mike. The crazies inevitably will go after the "different" one and it could be a girl or black or accent. The only reason guys don't get as much usually is because it's spread around because we're part of the majority.

It's well recognized now that the best online experience comes from from playing with people in some type of community. Playing with random strangers, especially with a competitive game like Halo is like swimming with sharks. Eventually you get bit.
To be fair "Owning someone" is also a phrase. The fault could be with the person that put the text on the video because that is not how you pronounce "pwn."

Dude I just play without a mic precisely because I don't want my night of kickin' ass in halo to be ruined. But the fact remains the times I decide to use it, there has been some nastiness that is the very reason I stopped.
I'm not saying others are sans trash talk but that the trash talk is aimed AT my gender. I've been called an asshole, this didn't bother me. I've definitely heard when talk about getting it constantly and immediately when they enter a chat every time basically which is quite a bit above average. Unfortunately this won't change through some sort of open dialogue because the people discussing and thinking about these issues aren't the ones doing it.
It's the same reason I stopped. Just accept that open mic chat is fucking terrible and move on with your life. It will not change.
Define flip out? Yeah there are times when I've bought something that people were surprised, but it's never been something that didn't come off as a normal human reaction. So i pre-order a Pokemon or an obscure jrpg. I don't assume the clerk is focusing on me being black or short when he rings it up. I am not that much of an online player but I usually disable microphone and people's voices. But mostly because I don't like hearing them than because I am afraid of insults. But that is certainly a bonus. People are certainly more kind in PC Team Fortress 2 than the experiences people are sharing here.

It depends on the game and service. I play Halo on Xbox Live, basically FPSes and fighters are breeding grounds for hearing awful shit.

the mute and block comms features on XBL work well and are there for just that reason. it might take bit more effort, but it works well.
