Sony in big trouble with PS Vita, Portable market in perm decline, rotting - Forbes

99cents.jpg

This comic annoys me (Gabe's argument) because I would rather play one brilliant game than 50 shit games any day of the week. 50 pieces of shit is still a pile of shit.

People keep throwing this around yet they have several DS games including Liberty City Stories, Ghost Trick:Phantom Detective, and Ace Attorney and plenty of "core" games like Infinity Blade, etc.

the strategy here, Iphone is the dumping ground for old games that have dropped it's value since it's released on dedicated gaming handheld like DS and PSP. without PSP and DS, Librety City Stories, Ghost Trick, and Ace Attorney would never be developed at all exclusively for Iphone if they can't initially sell it for the full $30-$40 value the game actually cost originally.

This sort of response confuses me because what is "shit" is all subjective anyway. Wouldn't the best outcome for something like the Vita be that it has all games from 99 cent apps to 50 dollar games?

Hmmm, I just don't know anymore. The lines are so blurred now.

Kindle Fire doesn't even have volume buttons. Hype for the Fire is reversing as people are starting to realize they were hoodwinked. It's just a better kindle e-reader not a tablet at all. Lots of kindle fire's being returned and amazon does not report units sold which really makes it hard to use kindle numbers.

I'm sorry for the aside but... picardwtf.gif

A billion people just got Fires for christmas and everywhere I've turned, hype and satisfaction is through the roof. And not a real tablet? Eh? You realize the Fire can run competitive apps at quality, and not just from the Amazon store, right? People are using it for all the regular tablet functions. Just because it doesn't have Infinity Blade (yet) doesn't mean much.

Well in EU and the EURO and converting it over, it does get pricey for them

249 Euros = $322.00 and that's just for the VITA
Add everything else in and you see how he got at that price

People who use euro do not pay with dollar last time i checked, they get payed in euro and they buy things with euro. Converting it will make it seem expensive but how much is it priced in the United States, as someone already calculated it's in the low $300's.

They told Sony not to release Vita there,
Don't wanna see that box, it's not gon' disappear,
The fire's in Nintendo's eyes and their games are finally here,
No Vita, for Vita

No games to sell, Sony'll do what they can,
But not a lot to do with no Monhan
Sony wants to sell Uncharted but this is Japan
No Vita, for Vita

Showin' how dumpy and wrong is your price
It doesn't matter if your screens are really nice

iPhone gamers seem pretty happy with their games, though.

People on every platform are happy with their games. People retroactively justify their purchases by boosting the stuff that doesn't quite match up to their expectations, and this is the most obvious when you have real gems sitting aside areas that don't measure up -- which I'd say is certainly the state of the phone-OS game market today.

Is Infinity Blade a great game that's easily the equal in content and value of < $20 indie/DD games on other platforms? Yes. Have phones successfully monetized a huge breadth of excellent arcade-score-attack, simulation, and other boiled-down genres of a scope that was economically non-viable until recently? Absolutely. Do some games neatly straddle the line and find the greatest success by targeting multiple options out of tablets, phones, handhelds, PCs, and consoles (World of Goo is an example that comes immediately to mind)? Definitely.

But at the same time, people who claim that iOS (the only phone system with a fully-developed gaming marketplace) provides an entirely fulfilling gaming experience for someone who's been a long-time major gaming hobbyist, that a single iPad can sub in for the full range of other gaming delivery systems, are -- rightfully -- looked at as mental, because the market isn't in a state to do that and there are good reasons to believe it won't ever be.

That comic annoys me because how do you measure fun? Is it smiling? Because whenever I see Level-5 fail I smile but I don't really see any fun in that...

Is it wrong I have the guitar riff in my head now?

In New york I used to see tons of people on buses and trains with the DS and PSP, and when the 3DS gets a bigger install base in a couple months I expect to see the same thing. Over here it's not weird to have a gaming console at all.

Besides who exactly are you embarrassed to play in front of, friends who know you, or people you don't know?

I see your anecdotal evidence and counter with this.

I rode the train into Phildelphia 5 days a week for grad school for 2 years.

I saw 2 DS' and 1 PSP in that time.

The train was full of Kindles, Nooks, Android phones, iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches

EDIT - I asked my fiancé when we first met (in the computer lab in college) what she would have thought if she saw me playing a DS or PSP. Her response? She never would have talked to me.

It doesn't seem culturally acceptable in America for anyone who's older than 13 or so to be walking around with a portable console. Among the younger kids who can get away with it, and Japanese buyers, the 3DS will be more popular.

Not saying that I judge you at all if you play a 3DS in public and you're 20-something, just that this seems to be part of the problem with portable consoles today- especially Sony's attempts at more 'mature' handhelds like the PSP and PS Vita...the concept itself seems doomed to me.

I don't really think that's it. I saw all sorts of people using the DS in public.

The thing that gets me about it is that you can only do it once.

One game vs. the best 40 $1 games on a smartphone, ok. Maybe more value there. But 5 games vs. 200 smartphone games? There's no way that 80% of those games are going to be worth your time. Or a modest console library of 15 games vs. 600 smartphone games? Only the first 40 were ever of any value.

Plus I've still only paid full price for two 3DS games. I just got Steel Diver and Pilotwings for $5 each (brand new from Best Buy), and Mighty Switch Force for $5, so the "$40" argument doesn't hold much sway over me.

I will never pay $50 for a portable game. Vita games should be priced at between $15-20 - especially if they are digital downloads. Then I would consider getting one.

You chose a winner! What kind of person judges someone on their personal electronics?

1 game is $50 so far.

1 game.

Want to know how many are launching at $30? A lot more than 1 game.

I never really understood why. I'd pay whatever I thought a game was worth. If it looked expensive, I'd be willing to pay more. I don't have like the criteria in my head that portable = worth less.

Hmm, did she say she wouldn't talk to you just because you were playing a handheld (which sounds stupid) or because you were preoccupied? Because people are less likely to talk to someone when they doing something.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Fire.

I agree with this, but I also believe that there are a large number of people who will overlook the deficiencies of iOS gaming because of the fact they are getting complete multi-function devices instead of something dedicated only to gaming.

Its kind of like my iPad. I never wanted one, but ended up winning one. Then when I had it, I never thought I'd use it as much as my laptop. My laptop can do things much better than my iPad. Over time though, my laptop use decreased as my iPad use increased to the point where I seldom even turn my laptop on any more. The convenience of the iPad, and its multi-function use when iOS5 hit - cloud saving, able to get text messages instantly through iMessaging, all my social media sitting in front of me (yes I know Vita has some of this functionality), plus the fact its an instant-on machine, and I'm at the point where I now overlook the things that it CAN'T do, because I've become integrated to the things that it CAN do.

Hmm, did she say she wouldn't talk to you just because you were playing a handheld (which sounds stupid) or because you were preoccupied? Because people are less likely to talk to someone when they doing something.

I'll tell you (almost) exactly what she said.

"It's childish, and you usually only see children playing them. I've only seen little kids play DS' in the waiting room (she works at a hospital) and there's a reason they make princess accessories for these things."

You know how stupid this sounds right?

Not really. Part of my job is to teach social skills...usually to kids, but I've worked with adults. This actually came up once.

And I never really understood this. It seems illogical to judge a game's worth by how "expensive" it looked. Hardly thinking in terms of marginal utility, Kev!

Be offended all you want, but that's the public perception.

Like I said, if you want to do it, fine, but it's not really socially acceptable when you're an adult.

You mentioned college computer lab, so that puts you into your mid-20's unless you're a middle age person getting a second leaf at life or something. How is it not acceptable to a young person for another young person to play video games? Did your finace grow up in a mormon household or something?

Wow glad my wife isn't so superficial, thats horrible...

Might I suggest that perhaps it is not in the best of tastes to rag on SeanR's wife here?

More to the point, even if this article is ultimately correct, it's not providing the evidence needed for us to draw the conclusion the writer did, so it's not very useful.

25.

Don't get me wrong, I have friends who play games, but they don't follow gaming news, updates, play a large variety, etc.

It's not like it's a bad thing to be a big fan of gaming, but crossing into the "hobby/obsession" area is still looked down on.

I remember a couple years ago I used to keep every game, had a huge collection. One of my friends was over and remarked, "you can't possibly be playing all these games." It made me realize, at my age, how socially unacceptable it is to own a huge collection of games. Sold off everything I wasn't playing and I keep it to about 15 games on my shelf now.

iPad is different. It just is, don't know how to explain it.

The iPad is always socially acceptable and actually a status symbol. Walk into a board room carrying a 3DS or Vita vs. an iPad and see the difference in the way people react. Even in this day and age gaming has a negative stigma among most adults. Just ask the hosts of the Today Show.

Sounds very close minded no offense, I get saying young people but only children? Yikes. I've never run into anyone like that though.

Practically, my indifference curves for video games don't even map logically. But I'd have no problem paying more for a game that cost more to develop ("looking expensive" is my only proxy for development costs).

Otherwise, I'd wait for a price drop. :)

We have a winner winner chicken dinner.

Sounds very close minded no offense, I get saying young people but only children? Yikes. I've never run into anyone like that though.

Is it though? If you could give your gut opinion on every single issue in the world, do you not think a large percentage would be considered "close minded?"

You see it as close minded because it's your hobby, and it's difficult for you to place yourself in another persons shoes. Think of it from their (or in this case my fiancé's) perspective.

You see the product advertised primarily to children (through the use of children-centric brands) and in your experience you only see children playing the device.
