I've been quoted by someone good looking.

I am shocked and in awe.

*creep creep creep*

I'm not an especially fond of the sexual undertones of the thread (I'm apparently GAF's sexual grinch moderator), but I am very fond of the general idea of GAF being more than just random user names with video game avatars.

The board has advanced far enough that the conversations can be interesting and genuinely sophisticated. I enjoy thinking of some posters as more than just [generic username] typing words on my screen. Pictures allow me to do that.

Come on GAF, surely there's another person as young as me in this sea of 20 somethings.

Anyone?

No?

I'll be in my room

I'm gonna be 21 in May! I'm young! :O

Edit: Oh duh, new avatar for this. :) I had to wear my wings. I was cracking myself up trying to take a good photo.

It's a collegiate atmosphere I feel, a mutual understanding of how far we can push each other while still respecting boundaries.

well i think (hope?) it's just meta humor re: the actual creepy PMs people are sending from the sidelines.

Its pretty cool and the dynamic of the conversations might change with this in some aspects. I might keep my current Avatar depending how it goes this month. It looks a bit more classy perhaps.

I hope this stays as just a temporary experiment.
I personally wouldn't want more IRL social dynamics to influence posters here on GAF.

Detective-GAF would also come with more serious repercussions.

I think taking away people's e-anonymity makes them act a lot more civil to be honest.

And showing people your face wouldn't have repercussions. People see your face every day when you're out and about.

The only downside I could see would be girl-GAF getting a metric fuckload of PMs.

Smokey Dave and I started a trend :P

I think that in general it is good manners to show your face when you say things :) it has the potential to limit somewhat the scale or bitterness of arguments that occur.

Or not.

I definitely have changed my posting habits since the avatar change. It's an interesting social dynamic now that others can actually see our faces. The atmosphere in this thread, for example, is completely unique. We're actually behaving like normal people here rather than 'Internet personas'.

I always use myself for this reason. No need to hide behind anonymity :P

I've actually been admittedly curious whether my opinions and analysis on subjects are considered...I don't want to say less valid, but more open with people knowing what I actually look like.

Whereas someone might not argue with "ShockingAlberto" where they can fill in whatever I might look like, "That guy with glasses and a threadless shirt" might be more be someone that's more easily tackled (or, less cynically, engaged).

Though I'm not sure where I got that idea.

i believe this too, i think a forum with faces and names would probably be the nicest forum on earth. itd have its downsides obviously but itd make for an interesting experiment.

I have noticed, at least on the gaming side, that your avatar becomes your identity in someone else's eyes.

People use avatars to immediately tell someone's biases and agenda and it's kind of slimy regardless of how accurate or inaccurate it turns out to be.

I've seen a poster repeatedly make the argument that, if you have an avatar that was drawn (like my old Conan avatar), you likely have a Nintendo bias and thus are trolling in non-Nintendo threads if you had something critical to say.

Having a picture of yourself not only destroys that argument, it humanizes the post itself. It's easy to say "He's biased because his avatar is of Nathan Drake." It's decidedly harder to actually read the post and see what he has to say. It's good that it's harder.

I agree with that for the most part. But I will say that some avatars that are either original, or have an unknown source are mysterious and give someone a sort of unique presence in a thread. Hard to really explain.

I've heard that argument too, and proceeded to blow his argument out of the water because none of my biases matched his findings.

I guess what i'm trying to say is that, actual picture for an av or not, providing a solid argument for things is much better than letting a stranger simply assume he is right.

A car forum I used to visit required your real name. Kind of like here, there was a vetting period with an overall aim of improving the quality of posters. Reduced the kind of dickery more common on other car forums, like scammers, and fostered a more tight knit atmosphere overall. Sure there were still problems, but knowing my real name could be searched and linked to my posts made me consider what I said a lot more closely.

I don't know what goes through the minds of those who think they can some how strike up a relationship via seedy PMs.

On GAF of all places!

I think GAF generally strikes a nice balance of accountability and internet fuck-around-ery. Real pics are interesting as a temporary, voluntary thing, but I don't think this place would be nearly as magical if Blame Space and Timedog were "Jerry" and "Mike."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA no. We use Facebook tech for the comments on our website, and people are still as big of assholes as usual. To be fair, on a place like NeoGAF, it might help a bit, but on the general internet there's no way I can believe that idea anymore.

I agree. I'm not saying that it's better, or that gaf should go in that direction, just that it brings a different dynamic to a forum when the internet and real life are bridged. I tend to behave myself regardless, so I found requiring users to show their real names to assume the worst of posters until proven otherwise. Just thought it was worth commenting on the difference I thought it made.
