hey guys. I'm not that familiar with anime other than the super mainstream stuff like lupin and vampire hunter d. anyway, I just started watching trigun and am completely loving it. what are some good recommendations?

death note is already on my list, and I love the funimation shin chan.

See the above link for newer stuff and here for older stuff. A short list of my personal recommendations for anyone to check out would be:

Baccano!
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (both seasons)
Haibane Renmei
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Master Keaton
Millennium Actress
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mushi-shi
Whisper of the Heart

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Ep.36
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, AVOID EPISODE TITLES!
But PGSM doesn't use episode title cards. It only shows the number onscreen.

Hmm.... :P

What did I just witness? When did this show go from camp to full on badass?
They actually had a super power fight sans-cartwheels and with explosions galore!
The rewards of pinching pennies for so long!

The beginning of the episode had me a little unimpressed mainly because SOMEONE had hyped it up for me. It was later that everything paid off with the appearance of
mother fucking Princess Serenity/Princess Sailor Moon! I know that it was a unlock-your-inner-powers type scene but I couldn't help but get into it and awe in the glory of the princess.
Watch the next ep.

They had only just set up the whole relationship (stalking) between Beryl and Mamoru the previous episode, so for it to go this far so quickly was actually welcome due to the show not always being the quickest in getting to major plot points.
The whole thing was emotionally exhausting.
Actually, the show's been hinting at that(and other things) for a long time now. Remember
the conversation between Kunzite and Beryl where Beryl reprimands him for getting into shit unnecessarily, then Kunzite quips that maybe Zoicite isn't the only one waiting for Mamoru to regain his memory. To this Beryl immediately declares THAT is what was unnecessary.

I think Aria sounds right up my alley. still have the last three episodes of trigun to finish though. the baseball one, big windup sounds really cool too.

Bandai was actually one of the most influential anime companies in Canada, and in fact are one of the reasons Bionix (our equivalent to the anime portion of Adult Swim) even came to be. It seems they want to be active in some capacity, but to the same degree that someone like Kadokawa USA was (is? I don't know if they still exist).

Mandatory joke School Days recommendation.

A Joke?

I looked at the wiki to check something about the episode and saw the title. Thank god I didn't check sooner.

All those scenes in the karaoke on a single set are paying off.
Watch the next ep.
I know!

I remember that conversation but I thought it had more to do with him developing a relationship with the Princess, not that it involved her (Besides getting more powerful)
Though in retrospect it makes sense.

I've Heard that Often the US releases get substandard audio/video masters to prevent reverse importation of anime at a lower price from japanese people. Watching the Baccano! and Darker than Black DVD's with their shitty video quality made me think it's either that, or the US distributors can be INHUMANLY lazy in making the dvd's.

Can anyone actually shed some light on this? I mean who would intentionally put 192kpbs audio on a BD?

Funimation just sucks at DVDs. This [Japanese supplying bad masters] hasn't happened since the early 2000s, really.

As far as I know they still exist, but they don't see particularly active in licensing.

Far be it for me to um-pimp my own thread, but it's kind of designed around 'everything but the really well known titles', so for a person with limited experience in anime I might recommend this thread first: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=173356

Maybe. It kinds of depends on what Jtwo has seen.

It's you thread, you can say what you want about it. I think that a lot of the shows listed there are perfect for new people, though I guess many/most don't fit the typical anime mold.

Along with their pirated copy of Adobe Premiere.

Hey, that shit is expensive!

Do you know how big their puppet/cg Luna budget is? It's not small, I can say that much.

Well, yes, companies have been deliberately screwed over before with dodgy masters, but that doesn't seem to happen that often at the moment. At least, if it does, we're not hearing about it.

Of course, the fact that it happened at all is a pretty worrying.

Well yes I would certainly agree, they're not bad shows at all, some of my favourite titles are in that list. It's kind of "the best things that don't have the same level of critical buzz".

They do that in like every anime. It's like no-one in the Japanese Animation business knows how to write a story where different characters know different things and disseminate that info in a believable way. It was the same in Asura Cryin's, main kid gets attacked by a magic wielding girl and robots that come out of the darkness, these are people from his school doing it by the way and heads to school like normal the next day, he's got no questions just wants to finish his homework and start fixing his home up or some shit. It's like this in everything. It's fucking maddening.

I know, right? I think the most egregious example in all of anime has to be Apocalypse Zero. It's set in a post apocalyptic future where the earth is ruled by terrible monsters who randomly kill people at the drop of the hat, yet kids still go to high school because, you know, you have to have high school!

Stellvia 25 - End

Either the last 2 episodes didn't have cg at all or my eyes have adapted to shitty cg that my eyes no longer bleed.

I found the 2nd half of this less enjoyable than the first half, the romance plots were at the forefront, all of which didn't even develop, they just happened like someone turned on a switch one episode, Shima's unstable emotional state was all over the place which was annoying and made no sense, which was the point because she's female, yeah... no that's a shitty reason.

Haruhi S2 - End

That E8 trauma doesn't go away, a lame end to a trolling series, not touching the movie because I heard it's 3 hours and I swore off movies of that length since Titanic another trauma of mine.

Gundam Age 12
tumblr_lx6n1dGtW51qbxqfpo1_500.png

Wonder how Decil will end up in the future. Overall that was a great episode. Largan got to finally do something cool! X-rounders is interesting.

Naruto Shippuden 242
The final episode of filler. I think that is my first time hearing bee in jpn, intriguing.

Oh look, I watched some anime. Once again, note how it's not from this season!

So this week is all about how
Yu's mother feels like she wasn't loved as much her sister growing up and this has given her 'issues'. Wait, weren't we supposed to be worried about mysterious beings destroying the world? As with last weeks episode, the focus here seems to be misplaced, given the severity of the situation. I understand that they want to show us (awkward) character development, but perhaps they should have got it tidied away before they raised the stakes to this level.

It's kind of interesting to consider that both Wandering Son and Fate/Zero are directed by Ei Aoki. Both works are so different from each other that it's hard to imagine that they'd be directed by the same hand, even if both shows maintain a high level of quality. I suppose it just shows how versatile he is as a director for him to take on two different works which must have posed very different sets of challenges. He's certainly not going the easy route of sticking to the same genre or style of series.

yami to boushi to motherfucking bullshit 10

mother shodan loves her vermin space babies

this episode was really boring.

Sounds like you're being ground down by the wheel of Yami. At least you're finally approaching the last stretch, good luck getting through the rest!

the fuck is this shit

The movie is easily the highlight of the series. Did you watch all of E8? If you did, there's no justifiable reason to not watch the movie. None.

Any other super mainstream stuff you've seen? Easier to recommend when we're more familiar with your tastes.

Just based on Vampire Hunter D, I would recommend Hellsing. Probably Outlaw Star as well since it's kind of similar to Trigun.

Natsume S4 1

I decided to skip straight to this, so I don't know exactly what went wrong last season. This episode seems fine to me though. It's not as good as the first episode of the first season, mind, but it's got good art, good atmosphere, some nice moments of animation, Nyanko-sensei being Nyanko-sensei, and in general the stuff I'd expect from Natsume. There was some light exposition, but it was fairly well integrated into the story. One thing I do notice is that the narrative isn't as episodic as it used to be; we'll have to see how successful these larger storylines end up.

You're killing me here, Jexhius. I don't want to believe that a series that I have such fond memories of is actually crap.

Okay, I just watched it on Wikipedia. It is relevant to my interests. I'll have to look into it.

edit: Hmm, so the original series is 7 OVAs, released in 1997. It was followed by a prequel OVA, and then a middle 3-OVA series. Going by the series chronology, I would have to watch the first prequel OVA (Aika R-16 Virgin Mission), then the 3-OVA series (Aika Zero), and then the 7-OVA original series itself. Is this the right way to do it, or should I watch the original series first?

Sure, why not save the best for last...

Now, R-16 and Zero aren't actually bad. They're actually pretty decent and probably are worth watching. They just can't match up to the original series.

It's not, it's a great series.

Too Squid Too Girl!(?) 12:

This is strangely hot.

I thought the previous season finale was a lot stronger.
They tried to sell Eiko and Squid Girl's friendship as something very meaningful, but I can't remember many times where they were close on a level beyond playing video games with each other. Squid Girl's moments of introspection where more tastefully done last year when she was talking to Octopus Girl; this time around they were played for comedy sake (dat ika no aware). I think the real problem with this finale is that the character arc is resolved very suddenly and without a strong feeling of tension. Losing a sandal/messing up a yukata is not quite on the same tier of drama as saving your best friend from drowning.
It made for a cute ending nevertheless, but I can't help but feel disappointed after how good last year's ending was.

Squid Girl 2.0: You Can (Not) Squidcape fin: It's more Squid Girl. Diomedea certainly has nailed this cartoon from every angle -it's funny, it's cute, and sometimes it is even heartwarming. I'm not sure what else can be done with this premise besides playing the invasion aspect straight, and that would certainly be detrimental to what makes the show so engaging. I would welcome a third season as long as it doesn't feel like a retread. Four tentacles out of five and a must-see recommendation to non-hardcore animu fans.

Steins;Gate 13

This is starting to remind me of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, but actually good.
I didn't think much of Mayuri and Okabe's relationship before, but now I want good things to happen for them and hope they both catch a break. The hidden depths of Okabe are starting to show and Mayuri is getting more and more interesting. Really hope she makes it out of this alive. All 3 of her deaths so far have been heart-breaking.

Okay, watched this now. I have to concede that it must really boil down to the show's restoration. Either way, it's still true that older shows clean up for HD MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the early generation of CG colored, digital anime.

Older anime was animated in real HD, early generation digital anime wasn't.

Well, older anime was shot on film which means it was already 'in HD', so it's not surprising that it can look so good when they handle it properly.

God dammit 7th.

Which was my point in the original post, but I made a misstatement about older anime cleanup because I needed better reference for the quality of the restorations.

My bad. :/
