I didn't feel like making a topic for this, so I figured I'd ask ya'll what you think of this illustration of Snow White? I'm heavily considering getting it as a tattoo sleeve on my left arm.

Very nice! I love the old-fashioned illustration style of it. There are lots of little details without being too busy. The only thing I thought about when I saw it was that a lot of the colors are of a similar value and nothing really stands out from the other.

I love this illustration ;D I posted it up on my art blog a while ago

It caught my eye and I fell in love with it instantly when I was looking up info about Snow White on Wikipedia. I tried looking up info about the artist, but there wasn't much to be found (from a quick look).

What's your art blog by the way? I love following those. They help with inspiration.

I noticed that too. If I decide to use this as a tattoo I'd get the artist to go over and it change some things/colours to make it more suitable as a tattoo.

Btw guys, tinygaf is pretty fun and cool :) Had to leave though cause my sister needed to sleep and it distracted her :/

once you become a "member" of GAF
it is not a time for celebration but a time for tears and sorrow
for you are now trapped and can't every get away from the call of The OT

>_>

<_<

;_;

She got a lot of experience points earlier
I totally just played the Pokemon Evolution theme because I'm a complete dork.

And Kisaya you have really good taste in art! And you go to school near me! You can probably guess what art school I attend then. Small world! :D

Released that when I got absolutely nothing done today that I set out to do. Except a shit load of driving. But that doesn't count 'cause you can be on GAF and drive at the same time.

The poetry stuff - man I always feel so terrible for saying this, but a lot of English poetry is hard for me to enjoy. I don't know why. :( Maybe I just haven't been introduced to enough good English poets.

TBH, I don't really like much English poetry either. Not a big fan of anything before the 20th century really.

Haha yeah I'll probably be fairly harsh but I don't want to be seem a dick if I don't post my own work. I probably will eventually... I just have a really strange relationship with writing.

Its more: remain objective, and think of what your criticism's aims are. Mine is to help the writer.

And obviously you have common sense and politeness, on your side, unlike posters such as my self. [or cyan may want your ear... :P]

My two favourite poems:

Leisure

WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?—

No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows:

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

William Henry Davies 1871 - 1940

&

Trust/ John Keats

I like it for reasons that are wholly different to others; but the way these two are written are so masterful...

EDIT: Omg congrats, you're a member!!

one of these days I will have to look up the instructions for my thermostat on google

I am freezing... turn it on 40mins later its Miami Beach up in here
I hate north east winters :(

It's better to be a member than a junior. No talking down to, you get to start threads, and you don't run the risk of being perma-banned for making a mistake.

Favorite novel: The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I even have a T Shirt that says "Dostoevsky rules!" on it. My girlfriend hates it.

Favorite book(s): I grew up reading the Wheel of Time novels. They hold an irrational place in my heart due to childish maudlin.

I also read most of the series mentioned on this page. Dragonlance, Xanth, etc. It's been so long. Christmas trees and fantasy books evoke the rye.

It's still quite possible to be permanently banned even as a member. But yes, sample size does make a difference, and one terrible post out of a total of one thousand looks significantly less suspect than one terrible post out of a total of five.

What would it take for me to lose the junior tag?

oh wow. Straight for the jugular. :P

My own two favourite stories are by another two Russians.

Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy [onilne text is now out of copyright, so download it for free!]

It's basically a masterpiece.

And my favourite short story:

Anton Chekhov - Misery.

Misery ~ Anton Chekhov ~ Kenneth Branagh

I admittedly am not an expert, but most of the perma's I've seen go down usually are cases of people going way too far to the point where it could be taken as a malicious personal attack, or just repeatedly posting terrible things. By the junior thing, I meant like bumping up an ages old thread with a response like "that's cool" or something, haha. Just people who are unaware of the NeoGAF customs.

We won't comment on specific cases, but I will say it is possible to be un-juniored if you prove a long enough track record of moderated tone and well reasoned argumentation.

It doesn't even have to be that, though (although you are correct). We are particularly strict on junior members in an attempt to weed out the people who will clearly be problems later on. Again, sample sizes matter.

Jon Ronson? Looking him up he did The Men Who Stare At Goats, which I saw and liked enough. What of his stuff do you recommend?

Never read/heard of any of these. Can you expand on some if possible/sell me on these? I always need more stuff to read.

Ronson only has three books but they are all very funny and insightful looks into insanity. I recommend "THEM: Adventures With Extremists".

Also if you have not read William Gibson then the best place to start is the Sprawl Trilogy. "Neuromancer" is a classic but "Mona Lisa Overdrive" and "Count Zero" are better.

Someone add Pushkin and we have our Russian quatrain.

whoa is that opiate?

It is, yes. Hi Panther! It's nice to put faces to people you've have engaged discussions with.

It may be cliche, but I like "Crime and Punishment" much better than Brothers.

And its perfectly okay to like the Wheel of Time, as long as one recognizes that its a study in wasted energy. Robert Jordan could have done some real good stuff.

Man, I'm so weird about poetry... 'cause the first one I like the last two couplets but the rest of it just doesn't do much fo. And I've never been too crazy about Keats either. :/ I don't know what I'm missing though. Maybe I need to hear it out loud? I don't know. I just get frustrated with English poetry since it's one of the few things that just won't click for me. And I don't have that problem with Spanish poetry. (Lorca is by far my favorite poet but I just looked up some of his English translations and it loses soooo much.)

Also how are we talking about Russian authors without mentioning Nabokov? What is this... I'm seriously considering learning Russian just for him.

I think next time I'm in the mood for some genre fic I'm taking another stab at Gene Wolfe's New Earth Cycle..at least that's what I think it's called? Got a good ways into Sword last time and put it down for some reason. I remember liking them a lot but thinking they were incredibly dense and dreary. Any fans here? He sounds like a really neat guy.

Lately I've been reading a lot of nonfiction. I barely touched the stuff until I was about 26, now I can't seem to get enough.

Oh boy! I love Russian Lit. So much so it prompted me to learn Russian. Have you guys ever read any Mikhail Bulgakov? I suppose Master and Margarita is his most notable work, but I think I prefer Heart of a Dog.

Well Pau Nabokov could almost be considered an American author (not only bc of citizenship, Lolita was written in English), so there's that.

Book of the New Sun? I'm a big fan, Wolfe is great.

How's the translation? I always love reading new stuff. Or at least buying it... I have too many damn books.

I will have to find my post defending paper books, it was a novel in itself.
