Yu Suzuki interview on Shenmue

Why they haven't let the Yakuza team do Shenmue III yet still mystifies me. Even as a side-project.

Yakuza games sell 500k+ each time they come out in Japan while running on the same basic engine. Shenmue is quite a bit different from Yakuza and would take a lot more money to actually make properly. It would also lack any of the guaranteed sales that Yakuza has.

More importantly, Yakuza staff want to make Yakuza, or Binary Domain, or whatever it is they want to make. They don't want to make some shitty has-been series that none of them care about. Fans can go cry moar.

Yu Suzuki Interview on Shenmue - Shenmue Master

Yu Suzuki allowed an exclusive interview entirely about Shenmue at Shenmue Master (French Shenmue fan-based website), and discussed a few things.

A few things to note:
  • He has written 11 chapters (Shenmue 2 ends at 6)
  • Ryo's will for revenge on Lan Di will disappear throughout the story (essentially confirms there won't be a big final battle between Ryo and Lan Di).
  • Shenhua has the ability to recall/link in with the memory of ancestors.
  • The Shenmue IP still belongs to Sega.
  • When asked what his favourite part of Shenmue was he responds "So far we are only at Shenmue II, I developed the story until chapter 11. It's in this sequel the part of Shenmue I care about most is hidden.

Nice to see this, if still a little depressing hearing that the part Yu cares about would be in the next game. He still talks apprehensively about the story, and talks as if a 3rd installment will come about, and doesn't let up many details about the story.

You know I'm not a fan of the series but you have to love the guy. You can really tell he planned ahead and loved the story he was going to tell. I really hope that someday Sega lets him finish it.

How do you know?

Don't lower everybody to the level of heartless monster you live your life at :(

Most of that money has been pissed down the toilet, because no one is going to release a game today with assets from 2001, and everyone else who worked on the first two games will likely not touch the series again so any experience, research, and work they put into the games when they worked on them is useless now.

All the more reason to put them straight into a 'retro Dreamcast' digital download version and not some updated 2012 HD budget game.

Because if they wanted to make Shenmue, they would have made Shenmue. They are one of the few studios in Japan right now who can basically do whatever the fuck they want.

Well, I love the Shenmue series (just as I love Yakuza) so I can't agree with the shitty part, but you're right about everything else. Suzuki and Sega made a huge gamble with Shenmue and it just didn't pay off. The Yakuza team was much more conservative with their approach and they've been rewarded with a long running series and their own studio.

Shenmue is just one of those games that will likely never be finished. Sega isn't going to take that gamble again and it's unlikely that any of the platform makers will fund the project.

Yeah , the cast would definitly say "gtfo old fart" if Suzuki went into their office :X

I know your hate towards the fans here but you'll never know how they would react,if Suzuki and Nagoshi would discuss the possibilites of a Shenmue release with the staff.

That "hate" probably comes from frustration over people always suggesting that the Yakuza team should make Shenmue 3. This happens in almost every Yakuza or Shenmue thread. They aren't going to develop it. That team shouldn't gamble their studio on something that's someone else's series.

It's not like they would it would mean their existence.
Come on apart from these guys who else Sega got for titles selling as good as the Yakuza series.
But I'll agree on that fact it's annoying but it's just natural.

You have to either specify the rules about topics like this and close topics or let people shout out their wishes.
It's the same like in every Square topic "FINAL FANTASY VII HD plx ! " , there are similar other annoying topics as well but it's just natural sadly.
As I said I can understand it but getting agressive over it doesn't help either.

Whoever makes Shenmue 3 will be a hero to millions thousands. Isn't that more important than "money"? Money isn't even real, man, all the money Sega lost on Shenmue is just imaginary.

shenmue is dead. mml is dead. it's time to move on.

i sent you that message bro

duckroll, do you have a 3DS & swap note? i have a message to send you as well

mod trolling is best trolling

If Shenmue was mean to be an episodic series, it would make more sense to do it now that episodic gaming has proven itself via online services.

You guys are gonna love my Shenmue III erotic fanfic so much...

Oh trust me, it makes it much better when I just keep punching Shenmue fans in the face. :D

I would love to hear it. Please tell us more!

I wonder what the production budget would be if they just made Shenmue 3 an XBLA/PSN game using the dreamcast graphics engine, but at 60fps with better animations.

I would totally be fine with the graphics from the xbox port.

You're a monster just like Lan Di! You better pray Segata Sanshiro doesn't find out which basement you sleep in at night so he can punch you in the face!

An infinite amount of Shenmue fans working on an infinite amount of typewriters will eventually write the complete works of Yu Suzuki. Too bad there are only about five fans in existence; but even still, this scenario is more likely than Shenmue 3 ever being made.

Honestly I think a remake of shenmue 1/2 would actually be quite profitable today, with the right idea and direction the series could probably be a 2-3 million seller on a multiplatform level, not exactly something that will make 100 million bucks easy but i'm sure it would be easier to pull off today than before. Shenmue was not so much a great game but a great experience, being able to make a great game around an already immersive world, that contains voice acting that isn't pure shit, would probably fare well. I also can bet any current shenmue fans would jump that shit day one just to support funding of a sequel.

i would buy this on as many things as its available for. so if its 2 games on three or four platforms (xbla, psn, steam?, wii something?) i would buy it 6 or 8 or however many times. i own virtua fighter 3tb because it had a project berkley demo and i own whats shenmue, so i would definitely buy an actual game.

1) shenmue III
2) half life 3
3) Last Guardian
4) FF XIII Versus

which releases first?

unfortunately the one i care about most (shenmue) is the one i have the least faith in. i do think half like 3 and the last guardian are more likely to come out than not. i have no idea about ff xiii versus; i havent followed its development at all.

Same here. It's amazing how well the visuals hold up. The character designs from ten years ago look better than characters in games now : /

shenmue 1 was like 10 years ago. almost half my life time, and i still want to know the end of the fucking story. probably because i was like 11 when it started.

Hell no! I want to kick Lan Di's ass!
There will probably be some epic fight between Lan Di and Ryo, with Ryo winning and opting to let him live. But I don't think it'll be a big epic final battle that ends the series like many thought.

Still.

FUCK.

I know Shenmue III will probably never come, but I want it, and I want to punch duckroll in the face now.

Lan Di turns in to a dragon midway through chapter 8. Ryu stops looking for revenge on the man that killed his father and instead must save the world from the apocalyptic consequences of a massive fire spitting monster over Japan.

Why do Shenmue fans enjoy doing this to themselves? Wy do they enjoy talking to the creator about how amazing a game that will never be made would be, and then procede to cry and weep over its futility?

Me too :(

could have been the greatest series of all time, at least in my book. Loved first game. So ambitious for it's time. Has more charm and personality than most of the games these days. Shame really.

Dreamcat games look greatthey held up much better than PS2, and some Xbox360 some are are up there with Xbox360 anyways.

Shenmue 3DS

You know it makes sense.

All I want/could expect is 1 and 2 being "remade" OoT style onto the 3DS with new voice acting/script/translation (and Suzuki not deciding shit here). Maybe a little change here and there to make the game's pace a little quicker optionally. It is really silly, but I want to open a capsule and see what's inside in 3D(and that applies to anything Ryo "picks up" and moves around in his hand. Also could add some AR functionality. Would be a good showpiece game for the 3DS, anyway.). I also want to open a capsule with Kiryu and have Ryo say something like "Who's this?". Seeing the QTE buttons pop out of you would be neat too I suppose (then there's the touch screen to consider). One problem that comes to mind is that the 3DS might be unable to support all of Shenmue's controls?

As for continuing the saga... well, I don't know if I want to see the end of Shenmue. Glimpses into the story via "Shenmue Online" trailers and whatnot make it look really unappealing.

Xbox version show different colour (too bright for my taste) and worse texture... the original dreamcast version still better. If i win the national lottery i pay the bill Suzuki san, I swear!

My mate and I were talking about that today actually - "Dude, if I was a billionaire I'd pay to have Shenmue 3 made and the released around the world!" and my mate said "Na, I'd pay to have ONE copy made just for myself" so I called him an asshole.
