Well i have ccs, I just need to sit down and watch it. Thats why i need my 7 days off again.
The past two years we have had multiple people out with various health issues and some new hirees that didnt pan out. Kind of sucks. When i had a week off last time I was able to catch up on a lot of things.

You watch the first OVA up till episode 13 and then stop.
That means watch the first two OVAs (both six episodes), watch Universe/Tokyo only if you like the setting/characters, stay the hell away from the third OVA.
EDIT - Actually yeah there's also an extra episode for those two OVAs as well, watch that too.
Watch gurren lagann.

I watched a couple episodes of universe and thought it wasn't too bad, but the dialogue is a bit ridiculously childish at times.

Gurren Lagann was Gainax's apology for Evangelion.
I couldn't get over the fact that they kill Kamina so that his inferior brother can imitate him later on in the show.

Think about it like this. Gurren Lagann was stylized sci-fi version of the generic hero Quest story. Like Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings. Kamina was basically
the mentor character, and just like Obi-Won, Dumbledore, and Gandalf, the mentor character had to die for the hero to progress.

I thought it was pretty obvious from the beginning that Simon was going to be the real hero of the show. The arc of him starting out weak and getting stronger until he basically becomes stronger than his brother seemed obvious.I definitely did not see that growth coming from them killing off his brother though.

But Simon is a much more interesting and developed character than Kamina.
I can understand where you're coming from, but you see I felt a connection with Kamina as he is actually around our age, compared to the old and wise mentor characters that were from SW, HP, Lotr and whatnot.
I mean, the death flag was there for a while, but my 16 year old eyes refused to believe it would happen (Gurren aired 4 years ago, right?)
I'll let it hover in my backlog. It's been years so maybe my perspective will change this time around.

Eh, to be fair, I transformed in about a year. Then it took 11 months to get my GAF account authorised and all I could do was lurk and read old anime threads in the meantime. How the times have changed.

But Simon basically gets his personality replaced by Kamina's later. I don't know if I'd call any character in Gurren Lagann well developed.

Er, no.
There's even a whole thing about how Simon isn't Kamina, which is why gets the kind of ending that he gets. It's part of this character arc.
