Real Pic January!

I guess I'm freaking out because I still have no idea of what to do with my life. I've been an office boy, a coffee boy, shelf-stocker, scientist, rig worker, dancer, college instructor...

I've always thought that I would gain some sort of stability as I got older, but it's totally not the case!

31 today! It's mostly fine. I guess. We bought/moved into a house a month ago. Seemingly adult-like behaviour abounds; but we put a ping-pong table in the living room, so that helps. Will probably hang a print of this XKCD in the same room.

Dearly Beloved has been telling me every birthday since I turned 25 that I 'turned old today!'. She's gleeful about it (I have 13.5 months on her). I'm seriously thinking of getting 30 flamingos for the yard in February.

My father, the jackass, said "You're now closer to 40 than 20!". Bastard.

That comic reminds me of CS Lewis every time I read it.

Not gonna lie, I kinda like it when a girl calls me old. They seem to think it is really funny and I find that impishly cute.

I strangely agree, but it's mostly because I like looking old. I like people thinking I'm 10 years older than I actually am. It's a weird side effect of greying and balding early. I get to enjoy the benefits of age and wisdom, while still being able to mystify people at parties by shouting "NOPE! I'M NOT EVEN 30!"

Mm. Your avatar is the face of someone posting a reference that he knows will go over my head.

Alucrid, I like how every time you change your avatar we see more of your face. :)

Hooded jacket >>> whited out pic >>> now

Seems like I'm lttp.

I'm hoping that with my contribution Real Pic GAF will get an edge over the competition.

Nice. Welcome to the resistance(?)! (Didn't even know we were going up against Christmas gaf. ^_^)

Well, which one of those did you like best? What do you want out of life? Family, single-life fun, adventures, money, etc.

I prefer it when a girl finds out I'm younger than she thought I was. I guess I can't exactly describe why.

Totally, dude. I love when a girl says "Wait seriously? You're only 28?"

Considering how old I do look (the more hair I have, the more grey hair they see), it's a great little party trick, especially when I pull out my driver's license.

I turned 30 back in September. Not really an age worth freaking out about, to be honest. People will be cracking jokes the entire lead up to it, so prepare for that, but otherwise just plan yourself a big trip or something fresh to mark the occasion. It's not so terrible. :)

I wouldn't have guessed over 27, honestly.

I go through frequent oscillations between "OMG I AM YOUNG AND THE WORLD IS MY OYSTER" and "OH MY GOD I AM AN ADULT HOW DO I DO THIS I AM GOING TO DIE IN A BOX ON THE STREET"

To be honest, the two jobs I've ever really liked were being an office boy and working at Starbucks. Too bad they paid like shit.

My ideal job would be one that allowed me to have a life outside of work. My social life kind of went down the toilet as my career developed...

edit: Oh, and I'm frequently mistaken as a high school or college student...

I'm turning 28 in March and not looking forward to it.

Also, I seriously can barely move right now. Never had this kind of neck/shoulder/upper back pain before, and I didn't really do anything to strain it that I can recall.

when someone

said you were married I was like, "oh, really? he looks like he's in his early twenties.

I think I mentioned it before, but one of my "probably won't happen" dreams is to be a voice actor.

Opening a clothing store would be cool. It's one of those "if I had enough money to be set for life" pipe-dreams.

I usually get the younger thing because I'm short/dress like a college kid, but when they ask me how old I am I'm embarrassed. Maybe that is one big problem with turning 30. I feel guilty about wearing t-shirts and tatty jeans, hoodies and sneakers. Like I'm still dressing like a kid and I need to grow up or something. It was worse in our old building that was full of lawyers giving us (me and my coworkers) the stink eye, but I didn't feel weird about it until now. :(

I'll be 80 and still be wearing jeans and a t-shirt under a jacket.

I know that feeling. I wear hoodies, jeans and skate shoes most of the time, and have a big bushy beard. I don't dress my age at all.

The benefit of running your own company? You can be whoever the fuck you want to be.

At least you're not a 30 year old single woman living in Japan or Korea.

my last birthday, a coworker asked if i was gonna go celebrate with a night out. I said I might, and she was confused, as she thought I was turning 21.

I'm 28. :(
I don'tknowthatfeelbutsympathize bro :(

Ha yeah- A fond ego-boosting memory from years back was this one time I was hanging out with a couple older friends and I met this girl and would up kind of hitting it off with her. Eventually when the group was smaller she was asked me where I was going to college and I was like "I'm 17, I'm starting in the fall" and she went :O and then "whoa. you look and act like you're a lot older." She was 20. I just sort of shrugged and took it as a compliment while assuming that meant she had lost any sort of interest in me. Then she kissed me. Good stuff.

NO NEVER GROW UP DONT DO IT :'(

I've oddly been assumed to be both much younger than I am AND much older than I am. Maybe I just have an ageless look?

When I was 12 a guy asked me if I was the wife of the house. ._.

As far as dream careers, I mentioned this in my life timeline illustration, but I want to go into historical linguistic research. It's too bad it's prohibitively expensive to get a Masters for me right now, or else I'd be on my way towards that go. Ah well, I study and do my own research outside of the university. I've been thinking of starting up correspondence with a few professors in the field as well.

Thanks. ^_^ I don't think I look too old or anything, but I hear ya on the yo-yo-ing between "the world is my oyster" and "crap, I'm 30. I'm ever closer to death."

Looking younger isn't such a bad thing, but what did you like about the two jobs you noted? Just that they gave you lots of free time? Maybe you need a job that works you hard 12-14 hours/day, 4 days a week, so that you still make money and have lots of free time.

I think I mentioned it before, but one of my "probably won't happen" dreams is to be a voice actor.

Why not? Is your voice distinctive? Can you act? Do you attend cons where they hold the VO acting competitions?

I'm not sure... something about those jobs was very appealing to me.

Considering that I sometimes work 9-10 hours a day with the potential of working weekends too, I'd definitely prefer a 12-14 hour, 3-4 times a week. It's one of the reasons why I considered -- and still consider -- nursing to be a future career change.

Personally I don't think my voice is all that distinctive. Also, it's definitely in the "dream" stages. If I thought that it was something I could really do, I wouldn't know where to start, aside from possibly taking some voice classes or something.

The worst? My mom gets mistaken for my wife all the time. That's truly embarrassing. (I went grey really early, and my mom looks VERY young for her age)

i'm just going to take full advantage of the fact that this is the most masturbatory thread on gaf.
cum on don't be like that

Hey my degree is in linguistics. :) Are there particular cultures or language families you're interested in most?

Definitely. I've done more this weekend then I've done any other weekend in the past year. I'm definitely enjoying life right now.

I seriously feel like being productive on the weekend makes you feel better. It's weird, because you don't think it will, and at the end of the day, you think "shit, I seriously did some shit today. that's awesome."

Hell, being productive in general makes you feel better. Being unproductive makes people feel awful, no matter how much they try to suppress it.

My dream job isn't really an everyday thing, but to do something with my writing that changes lives or makes things better.

I've probably said it before, but Woodward and Bernstein were my heroes and I've kinda grown up wanting to be like that.

Oh lord I've had that happen to me once. It's not a good feeling.

I laugh it off. At this point, I don't blame people for thinking that. To be honest, I love that people take me more seriously because they think I'm older.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by scientist? Getting a Ph.D. (for the life sciences, pretty much a 5 year minimum in the US) and completing a post-doctoral fellowship or two is an incredibly time-consuming process nowadays. Did you spend more time in science in comparison to other jobs?

When I shave my beard I look much younger than I am. That's probably the reason I always wait as long as I can before shaving it... I should really just buy a trimmer >.>

Personally I wouldn't get a masters in anything in that field other than cognitive or computational linguistics, lest you relegate yourself to a purely academic career. But I guess you're an etymology fan?

Haha. Believe me I got plenty of "Christmas Cake" comments while I was there (age 22-26). :P

HAHAHHA

When I was living in Japan, girls used to tell me about the Christmas Cake thing. It was ridiculous. It's not surprising at all, but it's really hilarious.

How many linguistic students want to do something outside of either academia or the UN?

Same here, and the past year i've looked younger due to how much thinner i've gotten. Need to bulk up a bit, working out has been great for the muscles, but I still look like a skinny dude with big biceps.
