? example?

I love OP, but Oda really does have a problem with drawing women. I believe Infinite Justice said he pretty much only uses two styles and that is generically hot and ridiculously ugly, the former of which almost all have the same face.

It's kind of weird since he is fantastic at doing a variety of different male faces.

Not everyone can design characters like Naoki Urasawa.

I'm honestly starting to hate his designs after 60ish chapters of Billy Bat.

Pretty much every female character.

Female characters in anime all look the same because they're usually meant to be attractive and traditionally attractive girls aren't allowed to look "unique". Artist and character designer Tomomi Ozaki talked about it in an old interview, in which she explained that she wanted to design a girl that wasn't pretty:

anna.jpg

Ozaki Tomomi said:
I had no intention to create a pretty Anna. She has an upturned nose and a big jaw. I wanted her to be charming, rather than pretty. Pretty faces are boring; beautiful women all look the same. Since there are only a few female characters in this series and they are all historical figures, I felt some creative restrictions, so that left me to have fun with Anna.

I don't think they're backing up Horizon's designs because they are good...
I don't know, if you're saying they're so ugly you find them funny or memorable then that's pretty close to appreciating them.

That's different from what I am saying, which is that they're so ugly I don't want to watch the show.

Anime with great character designs:

Cowboy Bebop
Monster
Hidamari Sketch

Samurai Champloo, so much. I haven't seen too many shows take the actual personalities and individual histories into account when designing as well as Champloo did. I don't even think Bebop did it as well.

so i'm curious... what do some of you guys here consider (legitimate) examples of good anime character design?

i hope i didn't just open a can of worms.

Random Example: Ginko from Mushishi

nYe2R.jpg

He looks damaged, fitting the image of a traveler who has seen a lot in his travels and is affected by the world around him. The actual reasons for why he looks the way he does (Hair, eyes) are explained in the show its self. Also, he is interesting to look at.

Yeah but he wears a coat from the future. What gives? (I actually know what gives, but I still have to point it out.)

Fairy Tail 43

So, I liked actually seeing the not important other members of the guild have a chance to show off for once. But, now of course it's getting close for the important guild members to have the important fights. Silly shounens.

Not even gonna attempt to argue about Horizon's character designs besides the fact, that I liked in, in knowing everyone was pretty unique and I could recognize who's who. Not name them, but at least I could tell them apart.

What makes a good character design?

Technical achievement? Originality? Detail? Personality?

Fabulous hair?

As long as I don't find it ugly as sin, and the designs reflect and benefit the narrative, I'll find it good design.

A good design is a design that is well-drawn, sensible in its composition and fitting for the setting of the story; a great design is a good design with visual personality, which doesn't mean "an original design" but rather "a design that doesn't get lost in the crowd". Heartcatch's character designs are a fine example of this. They always look "out of place" in the Precure crossover movies for a reason.

What if you're mostly indifferent to them, but like a select few?

Do you not think that the designs can actually benefit the narrative though? You phrase it as if they need to mesh and nothing more.

Well, designs can certainly benefit the narrative; they can add to determined atmosphere or serve as subtle world building in sci-fi or fantasy shows.

Natsume v4.0 2

It's great to see Natsume back to the kind of quality we could expect from the first 2 seasons. Looks like the next episode is a return to a more episodic format.

The opposite of this:

Miyazaki literally reuses the same character designs over and over again. If it works, it works.

-_-

Miyazaki doesn't reuse the same character design in the same movie multiple times for the central characters then have them all stand next to each other to make it stand out at how bad it is.

Not even that. I look at the designs as something separate, but not, from the character, the writing making the person. The designs serving to tell us even more not just about the world they inhabit, but about them at various moments. Much like the usual sterile room works as an extensions to whichever character's state of mind, I find what they choose to wear at any moment to be just as effective.

It's not something that's really taken advantage of though in anime though, with characters usually being given a one major design, and alternates that do no more than appeal to certain scenarios.

You know what show actually used a variety of clothing design to its advantage, many times to reflect the psychological state of the characters?
Idolm@ster.

Perhaps all the
creepy loli antics are bothering you? At least the original show waited a bit longer to drop those bombs.
Nah, I wasn't perturbed by any of that.
I was unfazed by Nadeko's attire since she was wearing something similar when Araragi was searching for Shinobu in Bake, and Araragi harassing Hachikuji in such a way was unsurprising since that behavior was already foreshadowed in the Tsubasa arc in Bake. In short, it wasn't a leap for me to get accustomed to the amplified Bake antics.

I suppose I don't like the direction of Nise. I was unengaged with the Senjougahara and Araragai exchange entirely and would have preferred a different opening scene because the mood wasn't right for me to enjoy it. And I felt the banter between Hachikuji and Araragi banter was more reminisce of Bake than anything else in the episode, and the only thing I enjoyed in the episode honestly.

Think of it as a porno.

Its not like anyone sits through the foreplay. Most people just seek to the juicy bits.

SHAFT is doing us a favor.
The foreplay and the juicy bits is what I like about Bake.

Usagi Drop 02

This show is so cute.

*rinonfoldedfutons.gif*

I like Rin, and it's good to see Daikichi trying to do the right thing even if he's in way over his head. Rin's childishness feels authentic. I want things to work out.

It's a nice show. It's something that actually resembles reality, which is more than I can say for most of the stuff that I normally watch.

I like it.

Another 1

Ehhh, i'm not really feeling this at all. The creepyness came off as rather contrived, what with the inserted shots of the stupid dolls every now and then. I'll give it a few eps given that Tsutomu Mizushima's directing it.

So the last Crunchyroll simulcast is Inu X Boku SS. Decent regional range too.
So much for that TV Tokyo rule, huh?

fuck, this means no simulcast of Daily Lives. goddammit crunchyroll :(

iDOLM@STER - 2

It's a different kind of anime compared to what i've watched til now, but it was a fun watch unlike the documentary-styled first episode. Going to watch some more later.
