I enjoyed Advent Children a lot as a testament to the capabilities of CG animation. It didn't do anything for the story at all.

Sure, technically it's brilliant. But compared to CC, it really did nothing with the universe. It's pretty lifeless.

I can understand that. I mean, even though IV has a lot of emotional deaths I've never really been able to get into that game as I played it many years after it came out (I think I played it around the time IX came out actually.)

Yeah. You also notice some bad design choices that if you played at the time it first came out, you probably wouldn't be so annoyed by. Things like status effects in VI are incredibly annoying because it doesn't actually tell you what you have. And I found myself wondering around aimlessly trying to find a location without actually having any indication where it was.

IF Tactics Ogre not owned,
THEN buy Tactics Ogre.

Seriously, the PSP version is god damn BRILLIANT.

:O ... ;_;

I haven't played Tactics either, but I did slave away on Trails for 9 terrible months. There's a clear winner here. A good game...or BLOOD AND TEARS?!

P.S. Should I get Tactics? :D

I get that FF7 is the popular one.

But why the fuck aren't we getting expanded universe FFVI stuff? Or Expanded universe FFIX stuff?

Stupid consumers.

Or a sequel to FFX-2!

The prevailing theory is that Nomura doesn't like working with characters and stories that aren't his.

Thus a reluctant addition of Setzer to Kingdom Hearts 2 where he beats up children with a foam bat.

I really liked FF X-2.
It was a very fun game.

Square just loves to kill their franchises.

Kingdom Hearts is my favorite SquareEnix franchise...before they killed it.

He was even more in Crisis Core though. Worst part about that game. WHYYYY.

I knew a girl who loved Gackt and so really got into Crisis Core fanart and ficiton. She never wanted to play the games though. She didn't know the story of any of the games. She just thought they were reaaaaally hooooot.

She drew pictures of Angeal baking cookies.

The problem is you're comparing 9 months of slavery with Tactics Ogre. It's hard to tell which one is harder on the soul.

You should get it.

I really liked FF X-2.
It was a very fun game.

I played the hell out of X-2, still the best magic system in any FF game.

I've not actually played X-2, but I have heard X is the much better game.

That is patently wrong. X-2 is a much better game and I will fight anyone to the death to defend my stance.

If I had enough money, believe me I would. But I only have $30 Sony Funbucks™ to spend, so I can only get one...for now.

The question you have to ask yourself is this:

Do you want to play a mostly traditional JRPG with fantastic dialog and story, zero grinding, almost no fetch quests, and some of the most endearing characters since Chrono Trigger?
Get Trails in the Sky

Or do you want to play a game about the tragedy of war and the human condition, a game whose writing very well may have inspired G.R.R.M. and will require some of the most fun and least mind-numbing grinding of and sRPG ever?
Get Tactics Ogre

Trails nets about 40 hrs of play

Ogre nets about... fuck... 160?

Seeing that you're ignoring creepy PMs, I'll just repaste the whole thing here in the hopes of getting an answer!

From what I gather, it seems that XSEED has one primary translator and one primary editor (on that note, that amount of work for two people seems utterly insane!). Do the original Japanese developers provide any general guidelines on the text? Without getting some consensus from several people on some of the more ambiguous and/or nebulous phrases, I'd imagine you'd end up with highly idiosyncratic translations.

P.S. I totally agree, bacon is super rad.
P.P.S. Do you actually know Latin, or are you cheating with Google Translate?

Gonna start Trails tonight!

Yes.

:D :D :D :D :D

Get whichever one sounds more up your alley, then (or whichever the gaffers recommend). Both are purported to be good, and I haven't played either, so my opinion is purely based on dark memories of last year and my desire to see the game succeed. I am very biased (obviously).

I'm actually leaning towards Ogre.

Seriously, though. Our guy played Trails for 120 hours or so... (he does like to grind, however)

Haha. Sorry, I'm not ignoring your message. I just get a lot of XSEED-related PMs everyday and it takes me time to go through them. Apologies for the delay. :P

They both sound so good! But I never beat JRPGs ever so I should stop buying them.

Really, the only reason I'm leaning towards Ogre is the price. Ogre is $20, Trails is $30. But if they somehow dropped in price tomorrow...well I don't think I would ever leave the house. .___.

I have TiTS since release but never opened it up. Also need to finish the first trilogy first :/

I'm now at the opera part of FF6, my fave sequence in any game ever. I wish more games had stuff like this.
I never actually got any further than this part in FF6. Kept messing up the lines and stopped playing. I should get back to it some day...

Just think about which battle gameplay style you're in the mood for, then get that! :)

I must be the only person here who avoids traditional RPG's because of the combat. I despise it. Only FF I ever played was ten and I never beat it.

Traditional RPG combat doesn't really mean much anymore.

If combat is your only sticking point, there's plenty of stuff to try. The genre has almost wholly moved to ARPG-style stuff these days.

I think turn based combat is an acquired taste. I wasn't really into it myself when I first played it (Lufia 2) but since I liked the linear progression and story I stuck with it and now it's my favorite type of game design

I'm an action game fan, but I don't mind a good turn-based system if it's engaging.

One RPG I really loved was Skies of Arcadia. It probably hasn't aged well, but it was amazing at the time. The sense of scale was unparalleled.

I wish they would make Persona 5 just be the dialog and social links. But then it would be a dating sim and that would be weird...

That really benefitted from having two battle systems. It didn't really get boring for the length of the game.

I know what you mean. That whole tap X on attack thing gets old fast. Random battles, slow battle system, etc. Only rpgs I like are Chrono Trigger and Earthbound, and that's mostly coming from nostalgia, I haven't played them in years.

Seriously though, play Grim Fandango. Surely there's some way to acquire it.

Quit rubbing it in. ;.; I'm a huuuuuge point and click adventure fan and that I can't play this until it comes to some DD site hurts.

I'm going to admit, I've never been a fan of (most) turn based battle systems or the whole overworld where your characters are creepily large thing. My first JRPG was Secret of Mana, and so some of the things from that game have sort of stuck as my ideal.

Not that I haven't absolutely loved games that had those things.
