I'm not anti-CG. I'm anti-bland art. You can make digital art which doesn't look crap.

You're going to have to give me some examples of what you consider 'good art,' cause the top and bottom pics he posted look great to me. The middle not looking as great, but hardly crap. It's a simple environment.

These two posts are perfectly aligned with your respective avatars.

Hahahahaha. Gotdamn. I don't know if I should consider that a good or bad thing.

Bodacious Space Pirates 1 - I like this show. It has some issues, but it's good fun and has solid action and a decent setup for a far-from-serious space action series. It's definitely off to a good start.

However, I do have to comment on a few things. First, history, that is, pirate history.

-Letters of Marque make you a Privateer, not a pirate. The difference is that pirates are illegal, while privateers have a letter of marque from some country that allows them to attack ships from enemy countries. These letters are only valid during times of war, so when the war in question ended, privateers would have to choose whether to become legitimate merchantmen (or leave the sea altogether), or turn to piracy. Sometimes it was one way, sometimes the other.

-On that note, the show clearly states that the war is over, but that the letters of marque are, for some, very strange, and unexplained, reason, still active. The MC is confused by this as well, and couldn't understand why there would still be pirates, much less legal ones, well after the end of the war. Hopefully the show explains this, because it really is a logical issue. Unless they have other letters from somewhere else, those letters shouldn't still be active after the war ended, that's not how those things work!

Anyway, other than that, my only real criticism would be that the MC is somewhat generic. She doesn't realize that going to work like usual might attract attention after her identity was discovered (by her and everyone else) and strange people started appearing, is somewhat clueless, of course works at a maid cafe, etc... yeah, generic stuff there. Oh, she's an okay character so far -- at least she clearly is a good pilot, so she's not entirely unqualified -- but she could be better.

And on that note, it's pretty silly that this far-future other planet has a culture that's basically exactly the same as modern-day Japan's, just with a few extra bits of technology here and there. The towns look Japanese, the people write in Japanese, they wear modern Japanese school uniforms to school, etc. How... convenient. :p (I know, I know, that's just how sci-fi often works, it's usually more a reflection of the culture that made it than of an actual other culture, and as such variants on this are everywhere in scifi. But still, it's a bit silly, how much it's like modern Japan. :)) Just adding stuff like touchpads that make arrows appear over desks (and various other applications as well) and cars that may drive themselves doesn't mean much when apart from that it's just the same as today.

Overall though, compared to everything I liked about this episode -- the amusing story and characters, the action and fight scene, the setup, all that -- the complaints are somewhat minor. This series is good so far for sure. It's very anime, certainly, but it's good stuff. :)

Rinne no Lagrange 1 - This is another good series! I'll be watching more of all four shows I've watched so far this season, not bad at all...

So yeah, Rinne no Lagrange is a mecha series about a girl who apparently loves to go around helping people who gets roped into being a mecha pilot.
Apparently her mother was one before her, and may have died or something?
Either way on that, her older sister (who is an adult) doesn't want her to be one, and she wasn't told about it... but of course she gets dragged in by an alien (robot?) girl anyway, and proves a natural pilot even though her only prior vehicular experience was with a bike. Those villainous bishies don't stand a chance...

The plot of this series is sure to get complex, but hopefully it'll stay as good as the first episode is. It certainly starts off well, anyway. We'll see about the rest. :)

Bodacious Space Pirates 01: Those were the most derivative twenty-four minutes of animu I've watched since the first twenty minutes of Ben-To. It was a great exercise in how to take an rambunctious concept like pirates... in space! and make it as dull as possible. Things like CGI ships, CGI cars, CGI lamps, and CGI water are only a small part of a long and slow showcase of laziness, laziness, laziness.

The episode begins with
an expository piece about how pirates are legal now or some shit and some background info about the universe they live in, somehow managing to give it the importance of cavemen painting in walls. After that it is establishing shot after establishing shot of how the world in this animu is totally like hours, but in the future! You have stuff like iPads and sliding doors and magazines that go into the telly, which is indeed fantastical, but all stuff that's been done before. It has long ago lost its punch.
I stand again by my proposal that this would have been much more interesting with real pirates, if only because we would have been spared all of that.

I did like the opening song despite the awful singer's voice; it sounded bodacious. Otherwise, awful animation and direction and scripting (no girl randomly goes on a tangent about world history just because) is detrimental to what should be a fun ride. At least the next episode preview had explosions!

I agreed above about how it's sillily similar to modern Japan, but it might have been pretty cool with real pirates too, yeah. :) I liked the episode anyway though.

ABe works from Comiket for all four of us who care!

I'm sure there are more of us than four, there have to be!

Anyway, those are amazing as always for his artwork, great stuff.

... Despera... :(

Since we're doing ABE art. I won this at ABe's panel at that AX.

You actually own ABe artwork? Impressive.

sounds like Bravestarr, Silverhawks or other "... in space" cartoons from the 80s.

but now with CG and more fanservice

Bravestarr was good!

Or I liked it when I was eight, anyway... not sure if I've seen an episode since.

The VA's had to sound extremely close to their Guilty Crown counterparts? I guess that made it interesting for Amata. I kind of dont really care much for the plot however the action was hot. If the music were enhanced a bit more it would really be wonderful. Compared to other anime this season it just seems a bit lacking in that regard. The union scenes were eye opening though. Colorful, intense, provocative, yet entertaining. Will keep watching.

I don't have to give any examples because you clearly have different standards. Especially since you thought that Hell Verse had amazing backgrounds and was some awesome animation experience. I almost vomited instead.

Ano Natsu de Matteru 01
I didn't really know anything going into this, but the show sure didn't want to leave a good first impression. Everything about the characters, the environment, and the lame deep stuff peppered around felt like leftovers from other stuff. The show is hyper generic in some ways, and the first couple minutes seemed like all the anime check boxes were getting crossed off as fast as possible. Anyone not into anime would just think the show is super erratic at the start, and it does little to explain some stuff that it just assumes you'll know or figure out because it's a trope.

But somehow things even out. The characters get to be more unique and likable and it kicks its own plot in over the dumb school stuff it felt obligated to go through. I'm pretty interested to see how this goes. Could turn out pretty well.

That's convenient, pondfowl.

I suppose I don't like the direction of Nise. I was unengaged with the Senjougahara and Araragai exchange entirely and would have preferred a different opening scene because the mood wasn't right for me to enjoy it. And I felt the banter between Hachikuji and Araragi banter was more reminisce of Bake than anything else in the episode, and the only thing I enjoyed in the episode honestly.

It's like the direction in Nisemonogatari has taken a turn for the worse! At Bakemonogatari had a define structure for all the arcs. Not just, you know, meandering.

I didn't watch Another yet but the perspective looks way off in the screen caps and some of the other stuff I've seen. Ano Natsu and Natsume are Good Art™ this season so far for my commoner taste.

There is a bluray? Shit now i have to double dip.

Riding Bean and Gunsmith Cats are indeed both works by the same author and all part of the 'people drive cars too fast and shoot each other' genre of anime. It's a good genre.
Gunsmith Cats - 1

yeah, americans do american things.

the gunfight in the warehouse was so classic great old-school Clint Eastwood like.

With more more underwear, right?

whats wrong with the art in Angel Beats?
Looked fine to me.

It's an adaptation of Key drawings, and Key is, of course, the worst thing ever to happen ever, pretty much, according to some people here. Angel Beats' art is indeed perfectly fine.

(What? That's only a slight exaggeration... :))

Rin-ne no Lagrange 1

As a future reference to other shows this season: If you want to keep my attention the best way is to have robots giving other robots suplexes. It wasn't even CG either. Its not amazing but it looks like it 'll be a fun show.

801 T.T.S. Airbats - 1

yay, yay, the good old times.

On the one side a love triangle between Miyuki, Arisa and Isurugi, on the other side a nice story about an aerobatic team with many unique characters - a little bit like in Patlabor or Planetes.
With some of the greatest aircraft arts and animations ever.

To be fair to Another, sometimes the perspective is deliberately off to give it that "horror" look. Not that I find it particularly good art personally.

Fate/Zero 11 (uncut):
Awesome episode. Rider is even more of a badass, and I loved getting to hear the characters philosophies on how they lived and ruled. It was nice that the subject wasn't simply treated as being black and white, and both Saber and Rider made good points in what they said. The viewer is left understanding both characters a lot better thanks to their discourse.

I think many chose to remember this as Rider totally owning Saber, because Saber sucks.
Guys, is it cool if I spam the thread with more pictures of the medicine seller from Ayakashi/Mononoke?

Only if you
include his other form.
A character from a highly non-monocle military harem, Aozora Shoujotai.

Something about this seems to imply that there are monocle military harems!
Is there a "monocle" military harem then?!

Dammit. Erm, RahXephon?

Do I need to watch fate/zero to get the Saber hate? She's alright~ish through the majority of fsn, then gets kind of awesome at the end.
;_;
Gilgamesh on the other hand, that pile of flash.

Boring hardass that takes up too much screentime and is usually there to either lose or look cute. Saber sucks. She sucks in FSN and she sucks less in Zero but she's still Saber so she sucks still.

I can't speak about other works, I'm just saying she's boring in this show.

Gotcha, the salt seems to prevail everywhere though, so I was just asing. It's not just you, lol. Like Dres below this;

I can't hate her after the end of the fate path in fsn man. Can't bring myself to do it.
They had a secret base-tier track playing as she faded away.
Kryptonite.

You know what I felt when that happened? Relief, because she was
finally gone.

Also for all the new guys:

We have an #AnimeGAF irc channel. You can find us:

Here!

Network: irc.rizon.net
Channel: #AnimeGAF

Hope mandoric will add that to the OP as it is not in there yet and has been in all of our past new threads.

It's not that Taichi was two-timing her, it's just that the nameless girl we see for about ten seconds is stalking him and he's too nice to call the cops on her.

And really do you see how Chihaya looks? Playing that stupid ass card game is a small price to pay to get close to her.

Do you ever post anything of value or is shitposting just your nature?

Is he talking to anyone in particular? I tend to just skip something if its not part of the flow of conversation so I might not have noticed.

I think those Penguin Drum backgrounds in particular need to be studied by a lot of background designers, just because they're good examples of how to do backgrounds that contain lots of colors and complex shapes without becoming a visual blarf. Notice the use of formal perspective to guide the viewer so that they don't become confused by all the visual information and can focus on the most important part of the shots.

Nisemono 1

Very much a re-introductory episode, which I think kind of messed with the structure of the episode. 2nd half of the episode felt much closer to normal Bakemono.

See, Noirulus? This is the kind of love and affection you can expect to see around here. And vomiting.

Wouldn't be any fun (or GAF) without criticism going to the extremities of either end of the spectrum. Is there a single anime series that everybody here enjoys without objections?

movies not included

I was going to mention like, fuck, Bebop, but there's probably a hater somewhere 'round here.

Does being longer make it worse? Yes, yes it does.

I'd say Mars of Destruction is like being punched in the face. By the time you know what's happened, it's already over.

Space Thunder Kids is like bad heartburn. Once it gets going there's nothing you can do but cry and wait for it to be over.
