The PlayStation Vita In 2011-2012

So I was in EB today and noticed they had their Vita pre-order section set up with. I uh... apparently System 3's Putty Squad remake is getting an actual physical release? Figured it was just going to be a PSN thing.

Love how they've gone ahead and used a quote from a review of the original 1994 game. >_>[/QUOTE]

Never heard of Putty Squad so I went looking up info. Wikipedia tells me that 94% review is for a copy of the game that never actually came out :lol (it only released on the SNES). Makes the quote that much funnier.

Wow I really hope Sony can restrict this kind of homebrew to just the PSP part of it. That way, hackers are somewhat appeased while the Vita market won't get affected by piracy. If the Vita gets completely hacked, it's dead.

It probably already works that way since we haven't seen anything else besides the PSP homebrew of it.

The new Katamari game is better for new players than old fans:
A change from past installments of the series is that time limits seem a little on the low end, perhaps in an effort to keep this portable game as travel-friendly as possible. Since the time limit can be seen from the selection menu, however, I don’t see why there couldn’t be at least a couple of longer levels, and I say this as someone who does a lot of PSP and Vita gaming on trains and buses. Even the final level — longest in the game — only comes with an eight-minute countdown, so exciting-yet-grueling tasks such as Katamari Damacy‘s 20-minute quest to make the moon will not be matched by anything in Touch My Katamari. Longtime fans will feel something lacking while newcomers won’t know what they’re missing.

Controls have been improved for the Vita, especially compared to the touchscreen-only iOS version and single-stick PSP game Me & My Katamari.

The Vita’s Katamari uses its system’s tech well without getting too crazy. While players can do the aforementioned stretching and tapping to make their lives easier, one could feasibly get by without using the feature. The end credits features a neat minigame that utilizes the PSV’s tilt capabilities wonderfully, making me wonder what other possibilities there could be for future games of this brand.

TMK features a candy collection system. Through playing the various stages, the Prince will collect pieces of candy which can be used to buy new music tracks and pieces of flair for the King of All Cosmos. I gave mine a top hat and monocle. The candy can be used to unlock Drive Mode (super speed) and Eternal Mode (no time limit) as well. These have to be purchased individually for each stage and can cost quite a bit. Collection is a nice addition, but getting anywhere with it will require a massive amount of replaying the same small number of stages over and over. You need to do a lot of replaying to up the replay value, which is something of a paradox.

To be clear, Touch My Katamari is a good game. The King of All Cosmos is still hilarious after all these years and the gameplay is satisfying overall. If you’ve never played a Katamari game before, Touch My Katamari comes highly recommended. Right along with Hot Shots Golf, it’s a low-risk Vita launch title that most newcomers would be pleasantly surprised with. I’ve enjoyed the Katamari franchise since the PS2 era and TMK is overall yet another good game. But with copied levels and the ability to be finished in a single day, TMK feels short, barely complete, and in some ways, more familiar than a sequel should. There’s just a little bit less of everything in comparison to most of the previous games.

I'm a bit ignorant to the topic of homebrew, will the vita be able to run homebrew (like emulators) without having to hack it or use custom firmware? That would be kind of a huge deal to me and could factor if I day 1 the system :) Thanks.

All this seems a no-problem for me. One of the things that I hate of Katamari is when you are doing a 15 minutes level and you realize, when you already played 14 minutes, that you won't be able to reach the size. More but smaller levels, please.

Also, I'm ok with the repeated levels. Katamari usually reuse a lot of past levels, and they still keep the charm.

I'm ok even with unlocking endless mode with that candy thing, if you can get the candies in a level and unlock the endless of other levels. It's better than having a 100% score, that also forces you to repeat the levels again and again, and when you unlock the endless mode, you don't want to see that level again.

The problem is that it seems that only has 13 levels and, for the trophy whores, only a few, like a PSN game. Maybe there will be more levels in DLC?

Kotaku has a pretty promising Unit 13 preview up.

Stephen Totilo's already had one look at Unit 13 and came away impressed with how networked the third-person shooter is. My time with Unit 13 goes even further to show that it's as far as you can get from a game like Golden Abyss.

The gameplay feels what you'd expect from the makers of SOCOM. It's a 3rd person over-the-shoulder shooter that looks great on the 5" display. From my time with the game it ran smoothly and proved to be challenging but not overwhelming.

What I found most appealing about the game is that it felt like a real shooter experience on a handheld device, thanks both to the physical controls and the excellent graphics. PSP shooters haven't been significantly successful, which many attribute to a lack of a second analog stick, but with touch-screen functions, plenty of buttons and even the rear touch panel, the Vita has more than enough controls to calm any uncertainty you may have about hardcore shooters. From my experience with Zipper's latest, Unit 13 fits the bill as a true portable shooter.

edit - and dated for March 6 in the US

In the past I've found screen protectors pretty crappy, but in the last two years, materials and applications for the iPhone / iPad have really moved on. In particular I found SGP Steinheil's protectors amazing as far as how good they look while still being very easy to put on with *zero* bubbles / gaps. Durable, no fade after a year+, not spongy or detrimental to the touch experience, and a fingerprint repellant. Just relatively expensive. I believe they previously released a PSP protector, hopefully they come out with a Vita one too.

Isn't Sony's protector good enough? I personally don't know because I wasn't able to put it on, but I think that people generally praised it.

So I guess we're posting here now.

Love the feel of Sony's protector, myself. Got a 3rd party protector for the back, too, but the Sony one on the front feels better.
Does protecting the back really matter that much?

I mean the only reason I use protectors is to maintain the clarity of the display. Regular scratches, especially on capacitive screens, rarely affect the responsiveness from my experience with smartphones.

Does protecting the back really matter that much?

maybe they just want to use protection...

I emailed Sega Jp customer support about Phantasy Star Portable series missing from Vita's PSP store and got a reply which basically said that problem is on Sony's side and they're working on it.

Anyone help me out looking for a place to buy cheap US PSN card codes?

I thought I'd seen a thread about some gaf members helping others out with this.

Sony would be really stupid if they don´t make all these PS2 collections come to PSV. The Ico collection and GOW collections etc.... We know ZOE collection and MGS collections are coming. Sony should make sure that all these collections end up on the PSV.

I absolutely cannot wait for Pro Yakyyu Spirits 2012, such an great baseball series. I'm just scared to hear how much it'll cost to import a hard copy. I'd rather do that then have to do the reset wipe every time I want to play I suppose.

Security/stability fixes and fix for some bug with 3G models not seeing the SIM card properly.

New Ragnarok Odyssey information/movies.

Also, does anyone with a Vita know if it's possible to disable friend notification popups? I only see the options to turn of the notification sound and PS button flashing blue.

Ragnarok Odyssey looks much better in motion than in screenshots, does anyone know if it will be playable online? or only local multi?

Screen capturing functionality is disabled in the Wipeout demo, I hope this isnt the case for the full game because DAMN does this game look good.

Thanks for the heads up, downloading the Wipeout demo right now!

Edit:
So good. Finished my first race in the first place too. The 30 fps cap isn't that bad but I hate how you can't capture screenshots. Hope they'll enable this feature in the retail version.

Bah, you can't change the controls type in the demo, I wanted to try the new ones.

Edit:
Ah, it seems you can access the option menu during the race.

Edit2:
Well, the motion controls suck and I don't really know what's the difference between Racer and Wipeout schemes, aside from different button layout. Also there seems to be a pilot assist setting which can be turned off completely or set to normal/hard. The default setting is "normal".

Wipeout 2048's graphics were very impressive at the mall event I attended a month ago or so and the ability to multiplayer race with folks on the PS3 make it my #1 choice for day 1 pickup.

Jealous of you guys with your Vita's and demos coming in. I've still got a month left until I can hold my own. =(

I feel like the guy in the identifying wood picture.
Yep, it's WipEout.

And it is as awesome as ever. The demo is just one event, a 3 lap race on a track called Empire Climb. Empire Climb is a good track, reminds me of Fusion because the track is a little wider than it is in the other ones, and has a few branching paths as well.
There's 5 teams (Feisar, AG Systems, Qirex, Auricom, and Pirhana), and 4 liveries for each team (Speed, Fighter, Agility, Prototype), but only Feisar Speed is selectable in the demo. Icaras :(

The controls default to some new control scheme "Racer" which is baffling to me (airbrake on Square? wat), but you can revert back to the classic "WipEout" control scheme with ease. Oh, and Pilot Assist is on by default. Yuck.

Lastly, a HUGE negative: the menu music is dubstep :( I hope the classic remixes in the full version doesn't mean "remixed by Skrillex". We have Explosi-WUBWUBWUB

Anyway, can't wait for the full game. I really hope I can change that menu music, though.

Currently messing with photo mode, will post some pictures in a few. Shame it doesn't support OS level captures, though... but then again, those captures do tend to look like crap due to compression.

EDIT: I like that the photo editor has almost the same functionality as the HD one did. Anyway, here's some quick caps:

Trust me when I say it looks a lot better on the Vita screen.

So jelly right now :( even for a demo

I tried to take some more scenic pictures, since the other ones were more focused on the city:

As you can see, you can get some really great pictures, just like in WipEout HD. There's photo effects as well according to the controls screen, but they don't seem to be working in the demo.

But yeah, it's a really great looking game. Those billboards in the last picture, by the way? They're videos!
