Pictures Of Bloody Fetuses
By Marie Diamond posted from ThinkProgress Health on Jan 10, 2012 at 5:30 pm

Super Bowl viewers in 40 cities across the country will see graphic ads featuring images of bloody, aborted fetuses. The ads are being paid for by fringe anti-abortion candidate Randall Terry:
Anti-abortion ads showing graphic images of aborted fetuses covered in blood and surrounded by religious icons will air during the Super Bowl in February, courtesy of Democratic Presidential candidate Randall Terry.

Terry, who has spent a year in jail and been arrested 50 times for his anti-abortion efforts, is using a Federal Election Commission loophole that ensures ads for political candidates cannot be prohibited within 45 days of an election. Apparently, primaries count, so Terry will be running ads on local stations during Super Bowl XLVI February 5.
The Colorado paper the Greeley Gazette notes that Terry has already run political ads with images of aborted fetuses in New Hampshire. The ads attacked President Obama for supporting “child killing.”

TV stations have typically rejected ads with graphic content, especially during events like the Super Bowl that have a large audience. But by exploiting a loophole that requires stations to air ads by political candidates within 45 days of an election, Terry has managed to circumvent those standards.

“This means that primary states that fall within the 45 day window will have to run the graphic ads during the Super Bowl if he purchases the slots,” the Gazette says.

i dont believe it. The slots are already full during the super bowl, and NBC would be crazy to sell it. They still have the final say on what the sell or not.

Was thinking that, but are there no local ads at all during the SB? (I honestly can't remember, only remember national ones)

How fitting would this be if Tebow and the Broncos made it to the Super Bowl.

Berkshire Hathaway is mainly interested in value investments. Buffett usually only purchases companies that he plans to hold for a long, long time. Assuming that people are complaining about Bain Capital being an "asset stripper" or "cigar-butt cutting" as far as I'm aware Buffett did that many decades ago but during the 60s and 70s he began to dislike the ethical consequences of asset stripping. I don't know much about Bain, it sounds like they partook in asset stripping but I doubt they did it exclusively.

Correct, so essentially there is no difference. Bain has investment in Burger King, The Sports Authority, Dunkin Donuts, Toys R Us, among others - they are not simply an asset stripper.

The point being, Bain does exactly what Berkshire Hathaway does - invests money in companies they see as a value and able to increase profit in. So Obama is going to hammer Romney for working at Bain and then trot out Warren Buffet as "The Oracle" when he offers advice that is in line with Obama's ideology. Laughable.

Bain did whatever was in their own best interest. Sometimes that meant helping a startup expand and turn a profit. Sometimes it meant charging tens of million in fees while pushing the company into risky loans and leaving it to go bankrupt.

Romney actually went into public service and gave the people of Massachusetts health care. Your assertion is laughable.

Checkmate.

It's not something that's going to resonate, sorry. Point me to an objective look at one of these companies Bain acquired you speak of. You make it would like Bain would buy a company simply for the joy of laying people off, pull back out what little money they could by liquidating it and leave it scorched Earth.

They are local spots, NBC has nothing to do with it.

There are, some markets sell them back to NBC so depending on where you live you may not see one.

To be honest, I don't think that Romney working at Bain makes him a better or worse person. He did his job, and it sounds like he did it quite well. What does make him a worse person is that he bends to whatever people want to hear and tries to be all things to all people.

...but from a campaign finance perspective (and I'm not saying this is good or bad) he will hurt Obama because most of the titans of industry and on Wall Street will view him as one of them and someone who understands them, versus Obama, who willingly accepts their money, then vilifies them.

He didnt win in Iowa :/

Didn't he? I thought that the votes came back that Santorum had 20 votes that weren't counted and Romney had 21 that weren't counted, making it a 9 vote lead? perhaps I am wrong, though.

And people were ragging on Romney for only getting 35% of the vote in survey's leading up to the primary. The narrative has been that he can't rally the base, but he did end up with 39%, higher than McCain in 2008, and far and away beating the second place finisher.

and wants to strip the American people of it? wtf?

we really don't know what Romney's positions actually are. the red meat he's throwing during the primaries won't be his messaging during the general election, and neither would likely reflect what he'll actually do in office.

David Brooks, is that you?

I think Zabka's wrong and right. It's going to resonate ... but only with Obama's base. But that is something he badly needs going into the next election.

OWS was in many ways a reaction to the Obama adminstration's indifference or inaction to their concerns. Romney could be scapegoatted into becoming the personification of that Wall Street/Banksta mentality that they find so distasteful.

Politico did a story back in July about the campaign run against Romney back in 94.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0711/58952.html

One thing that stuck out to me:
What’s more, Romney has been more careful than he was in 1994 about making sweeping claims about his job creation record. That year, Romney claimed credit for creating 10,000 jobs. Now, he’s far more cautious, speaking about his business record in general terms and acknowledging that it has its blemishes.

i think his defense of the healthcare issue is that it should be a decision left to the states

The Bain thing, not really a bad thing. But in context, it just weakens Romney's credibility and populist appeal, it's a character thing, esp. in the current economic climate where people are struggling.

There are, if I remember correctly they seem to mostly get aired during halftime or in the second half, especially if there have been more stoppages in the game and they need to fill more time.

They once again miss the fact that the trajectory of unemployment is a much better predictor of incumbent re-election than absolute levels.

It will certainly help Obama if he's able to show a net gain of jobs on his watch, especially as two million jobs were lost in the first quarter of 2009, before his policies kicked in. But the trend and how well it is felt is what is critical.

It will be interesting to watch gas prices this summer. The recovery could start evening out with the holiday season over, but it could completely stall with another summer of high gas prices and ME tension (Iran). There's a lot of focus on the Eurozone's potential impact on us, but gas prices seem to often be overlooked

I view it like this. I have no problem with people deciding that abortion is not right for them or their situation, but keep it out of my face. As a vegetarian, I disagree with PETA using the images of dead animals to get their views across. I find it hypocritical and "non-vegan". I believe the use of aborted fetuses as a similar situation - "non-pro-life".

Checkmate.

Good to see you finally joined our side in favor of healthcare. Welcome.

Think the main problem with Romney and his Bain 'experience' is he has said constantly in the past that the reason he is a 'stellar' candidate compared to his peers is his experience in the business world and that he knows how to create 'real' jobs, (Which of course could not be further from the truth. He may have done his job, but his job was not creating 'real jobs' that's for sure). He has actually put those two together on his own in the past and it is a sound bite he will never live down against an opponent in this environment. He dug his own tone deaf grave. No he is not saying that now, but it was stuff he said plenty in the past.

I see those aborted fetus ads past midnight and I'm all like "who the fuck cares? We got people starving in the streets and without a place to sleep. Sick people can't afford basic healthcare. Money that could be helping hurting civilians at home is being used to kill people all over the world in the name of the US. The rich are not just ignoring the suffering of most of the world, they are deliberately causing it. You expect me to give a shit about a little piece of dead flesh that was never conscious in the first place? Get a life you typical bible-thumping dickhole."

Yeah it makes me pretty angry. Those commercials are just out there for shock value; to get people pissed off.

Romney am cry
A near-panic has taken hold among some core conservative activists, who are now scrambling to devise a strategy to deny Mitt Romney the Republican presidential nomination.

Many of these activists see South Carolina’s primary on Jan. 21 as their last best hope of stopping Romney by consolidating in a united front against him. But many acknowledge that they have yet to figure out which of the remaining conservative rivals to rally behind and which should get out.

The tension is exacerbated by the deep divisions between two key GOP wings: tea party groups yearning for a pure small-government conservative, and evangelical Christians who want a loyal social conservative.

In one sign of their desperation, some activists are holding out for what they acknowledge is a spectacular long shot: a late-entering savior who could still qualify for enough state ballots and win enough delegates to force a brokered GOP convention this summer.

The Romney conundrum will be on the agenda Friday when about 150 evangelical leaders huddle at a Texas ranch to debate their next move. Likewise, the subject of consolidating conservative opposition to the former Massachusetts governor is expected to be a major point of discussion among about 500 attendees at a tea party convention set for this weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where the list of speakers includes two Romney rivals seeking the conservative mantle, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

One participant in Friday’s evangelical meeting, the Rev. Jim Garlow — pastor of a San Diego megachurch and a leading champion of California’s anti-gay-marriage initiative — said Romney is “untrustworthy” and not “ visceral on the issues that are cardinal to me.”

“I’m not in panic mode, at least not yet,” said Garlow, one of Gingrich’s most prominent evangelical backers. “There’s still time, although the fuse is short.”

...

Kibbe noted that the qualifying periods for many later primary races will remain open for weeks — and that a new candidate could attract enough support to provoke a contested convention.

“In this more decentralized process, if Romney continues to create this vacuum by not consolidating 30 to 40 percent, the vacuum has to be filled,” Kibbe said. “If Newt or Santorum can’t do it, somebody’s going to do it.”

It is an admittedly unlikely scenario — many state ballot rules are complicated, and the concept of staging a convention battle ignores the reality that nominations are often won through momentum.

Some say the process may happen naturally after South Carolina votes.

“One of the things that causes people to drop out,” said Bauer, who ran for president in 2000, “is when the quality of hotel you’re staying in goes down every week, and you’re laying off staff.”

Agree. The pattern over the past two years has been for a good Q4, then things stall out mid-year as gas prices and other problems spike up (hello, GOP debt ceiling shutdown fight).

I'm expecting a mix of gas prices, European fallout and GOP shutdown shenanigans on the budget to have a similar effect this year. They know how effective it was last time around.

PPP Poll for SC. Romney ahead, as expected. Colbert polling at 5%, ahead of Huntsman and Roemer and close to Perry.

4% is a tighter spread than I expected. With Newt in 2nd I'm guessing the super PAC carpet bombing going on down there is having an effect.

And wow at Colbert ahead of Huntsman. :lol

LOLGOP

"It’s astounding to me that the president is claiming these are recess appointments and within his authority, when Congress was not in fact in recess,” Black said. “These appointments are an affront to the Constitution. No matter how you look at this, it doesn’t pass the smell test. I hope the House considers my resolution as soon as we return to Washington so we can send a message to President Obama."

This. Who cares? Obama didn't work for Buffet's company. Romney ran his.
Think of business as CoD where the noob tube is the go to strategy to win games. Both Romney and Buffet use it because they are in it to win it. The difference is where Buffet acknowledges that it's a cheap tactic and calls for a nerf where Romney keeps talking up how awesome he is at the game. This is the way I see it. Also, don't stretch this anology too far.

Indeed:
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/...t-fight-hurt-the-economy-delayed-recovery.php

That's quite a potent mix and we could be dealing with that through the conventions in August, where republicans will wax poetic about the stalled growth to national audiences. I just hope the administration has a better plan this time.

ME tension, high gas prices, budget standoff, and the SC's ruling on healthcare within the same two month period. It's hard to see the Obama admin steering through all of that unscathed

But Mitt wins and game is over for evangelicals, Jesus lovers and teabaggers. They lose, and may stay home on Nov 4

Depends on whether he picks a batshit for VP

I don't think Romney saying he likes to fire people (in whatever context he was speaking) hurt him. Rememer, you're talking about Republican voters, here.

Yup. Judging from my conservative Facebook friends, firing is fully endorsed and lauded. In fact, it's turned into a "fire Obama" soundbyte.

Eh, I doubt it. After the GOP convention and it's final that Mitt wins, there will be a concerted effort to drive home just how much "the country cannot take another four years of Obama" that will get out the vote.
