When you're worth half a billion dollars, giving 4 million over 5 years is chump change.

Ehhh. Most people wait until they are significantly older to do much of their philanthropy work. I would love to see most other people give even just 2 or 3% of their income to charity.

Especially when they are just done to be a check box for your governors' and presidential campaigns.

Donating is good, even for less than honest reasons, but let's not pretend he is some great philanthropist because his campaign planner told him to write a few checks to his own church.

and a huge PETA jackoff.

Seriously...terrible person
. He and Newt should get in bed with one another.

I don't understand this. OK, you disagree with him on animal rights. But why hate people that want to be nice to animals? You really think he is about ban your bacon? PETA is great . . . they'll ensure we never ban meat because then we'll stop getting all these nude photo shoots.

I've been a vegetarian for over 10 years now, and even I can find PETA to be a bit off putting and sometimes down right repugnant. However, I agree - the hate for PETA and people that think it is wrong to eat meat and used animal products is a bit disconcerting. I don't postalize the virtues of not eating meat, nor do I chastise those who chose to do so. But there is always someone that makes a stink about me being a vegetarian when they find out. I don't get it.

Definitely not a philanthropist, but I am sure he will be some day.

Yeah, it's also quite surprising considering how intellectual many of his positions are.

Paranoia is something that many people can simply not escape. Vaccine's have saved millions and millions of lives, while improving the quality of life of tens of millions more. Why someone would be against them is beyond me.

It might be different if there was any actual evidence against vaccinations...

I didn't catch who, but someone on NPR last night said that in the battle between Romney's history with Bain and Obama's presidential record, that Romney would win. I couldn't stop laughing my ass off.

Yes! I heard this too on my drive home and couldn't believe it.

I find it odd that the Republican response to all the outrage at just about everything they've done for the past three years is to double, triple, then quadruple down on the crazy.

What are you specifically talking about? If the 2010 elections were an indication, they were doing exactly the right thing to get into office. The problem is, most tea party stances are untenable and destructive to the common good.

So checking the Concord Monitor's more detailed election results, Huntsman actually beat Paul here in Concord by 2 votes. Also my ward (Ward 6) was Romney's worst ward, with Paul beating him here.

Yeah, that was a poorly thought out statement on my part. Not even sure where I was trying to go.

PLEASE let there be a defense force for this, so I can say something to him that should get me banned.

I'll play devil's advocate.

Free speech shouldn't be unimpeded by limits on how it should be exercised. It's one of our most sacred rights, and it shouldn't be infringed upon unless it can be shown there is a compelling security reason for it to be infringed upon.

Hmmmm.

corporations should not have free speech. People have free speech. Corporations are not people. For that alone, i hope Obama gets a true people's supreme court judge on that will repeal that crap.

Meh, Newt still has a chance if he can take a convincing win in SC, however unlikely that win. I don't think he'd be tearing down Mitt if he didn't think he could win.

Agreed. Shut down the New York Times.

in funding elections, yes. Not in expressing opinion, endorsing, etc. HELL NO. if the editor in chief of the NYT wants to donate to Obama and promote him, more power to him, but companies that pour untold money into political campaigns is reprehensible.

Publicly funded elections is the only way to both level the playing field, and keep politicians off the hook for paying back favors.

There's a difference between releasing a statement and giving money.

There might be. Too bad he didn't say that. Read what I responded to please, not what you thought up in your head.

What about freedom of the press?

Good question - ask the guy who said "corporations should not have free speech" not me.

You said "corporations should not have free speech". If you want to be nuanced, maybe don't say dumb things next time right off the bat.
