The line between "making a sexual/racially insensitive comment" and being racist or sexist has been blurred of late.

Why is this happening so frequently now? especially with the sexism? Any thread that might even be controversial becomes a battleground in no time.

I imagine this is an intentional line blurring.

If it prevents people from making sexist/racially insensitive comments because they might be perceived as a racist and undesirable to post here, then I am keen on that idea.
 
Just seems like a lot more landmines have been laid out recently than before.

Ah well not to get back into that debate. I'll just continue ignoring dumb threads and let others fight the good fight.

This is the sort of sentiment where problems come in. There is no fair negotiation of whats sexist or whats racist, because that's defined by a power that is also the power that enforces the actions against it. See: McCarthyism.

It is effective though.

I don't really want people to get banned, I just want them to have a bit more empathy. I'm pretty sure all people have some level of prejudice in them, but we don't realize it because we lack the ability or refuse to empathize with others. A lot of these people don't even realize that they are being offensive. If no one ever mentions it when they're offended then how can people ever correct they're own behavior? It unfortunately does seem futile sometimes, when you get people who refuse to amend their behavior because they can't accept that they would ever be at fault. Still, when I'm actively feeling insulted I'm not willing to just keep quiet.

In other news, it's 3 am here and I need to get some sleep. See you guys tomorrow.

I mean, I don't disagree, but this is still a private board with private rules. People can be banned for whatever the administrators empower the moderators to define as "too far."

One of the benefits of GAF, I'd argue, is that there is often little tolerance for crazy bullshit. Sometimes people may slip under the radar, sometimes celebrity posting status may keep someone alive longer than they should be, but the massive amount of lurking traffic this site gets means that mods have to be itchy on the ban trigger finger. Otherwise everything would go to hell fast and the standards of discussion and behavior would nosedive.
 
Here is the thing that bothers me about these type of situations...these guys make dumb threads or say a stupid comment. Very rarely is it downright sexist or racist since that would lead to a ban instantly which I agree with. However for their insensitive comments they often get called sexist or racist. These are very serious labels and I don't feel it's fair to issue them out so casually and in doing so probably damage relations further and instead of helping people understand it just becomes a clusterfuck and a warzone where only one side get banned. I simply don't see it effectiveness when it reaches those levels.

It behooves a speaker to make sure that their comment can not be framed as sexist or racist. If they get called out, then they should quickly explain the distinction.

If they can't do that, oh well.

Whilst I agree that sexism and racism isn't black and white as far statements go, but it's also kind of weird that you're half defending, what exactly? ignorance?

Rarely, is a poster called racist, or sexist bluntly and directly. And even if they are, why can't they type the following question:

Why are you calling me that? can you justify it?

Well, the standards for discussion have nosedived, and it can't be squarely put on what has been deemed racist or bigoted people. Especially since those people tend to get banned. For example, gaming moderation encourages large OT threads which damage discussion by promoting a PR-like euphoria for a product. It is hard to discuss a game in a negative manner when you're stuck in a thread that reads like a commercial for the game. There is also the issue of the OP becoming a point of discussion instead of the game due to the grandiose nature of this modern GAF practice.

You can also get away with crazy bullshit if it falls in line with moderation POV or is within a certain thread or community. Since GAF has begun protecting certain groups it has also helped to divide the community. The tribalism of the gaming side has crept into the OT. People speak differently in different threads or they don't participate in certain threads at all, even if they had some interest in them, due to the fear of reactionary bannings. So instead of discussion being promoted, discussion is being feared.

So it's hard to say it's been a net positive. It has been a change though.

Exactly. ignorance. As in they probably don't know any better. It's not standing up against them that I have a problem with it's how I see it being handled. It starts with labels and escalates to a ban. what exactly will these ignorant people learn from this?

If dumb topics aren't wanted then lock them up as soon as it's posted. Sometimes I feel they are left open just as ban fodder.

I'm not even sure what your point before was now. I think we're on the same page. How that happened I'm not sure. But I'm glad we are. :P

I once wrote a haiku and had some sunset picture of the ocean I drew with it when I was in 5th grade. We all submitted them to the Puyallup Fair. I won first prize, but I think everyone might have. Although I never really saw if they did or not, so I still think that I actually won.

I'll do some brainstorming and maybe do a few sketches tomorrow. I'll try a large variety so we can see where we'd like it to go.

Mine aren't exactly high art. I can't write most forms of poetry for the life of me, anyway.

I'm thinking of trying an art style that is sort of Layton-esque. I think it would fit well with that look. But I'm still going to experiment as well.
