Look at me with the godlike accuracy :D

Crossing my fingers in hopes that I survive my first steps out of the Skyranger!

you survived your first mission,

Adnor, Minsc, DennisK4 and Squire Felix weren't so lucky.

McNum is obviously charmed, he went berserk after witnessing the death of Dennis4K and killed two aliens with his random fire lol.

Created my first game ever of UFO defence.

NeoGAF Prime is based sort of near London. Named my guys after F1 2011 gaf and promptly intercepted and destroyed my first UFO. :) No crash site though, must have utterly obliterated it.

Loving the music.

Ah, I see the game has an accurate representation of my Team Fortress 2 strategy, then. Shoot everything, and if it dies, it was hostile. I like Heavy Weapons Guy, in case you didn't guess. "Whirrrrr... BRAKKABRAKKABRAKKA! Whoo hahahahahaaa!"

Crap this thread moves fast at times :S

Oh hells, I'm a coward.

At least my reactions are above 50.

You asked to stay alive... ;)

Aw, I am a coward...

Correction, I WAS a coward.
At least I died with honour, right?

You died after destroying a Cyberdisc with a pistol! A GAWD damn pistol! it was the bravest thing I've ever seen, unfortunately you were caught in the ensuing explosion, but your sacrifice saved lives!

BOOOOOOOYYYYYYEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

U MAD, aliens?

Every species needs a hero and now humanity has theirs.

wait.....what?

You and McNum we pinned down by 2 sectoids and the Cyberdisc Adnor destroyed, I think you were shaken by Adnors sacrifice and shot wildly at the remaining Sectoids, who caught you with a lucky shot, the personal armour wasn't enough to save you :(

So tempted to grab this for $5 off Steam.

I kind of want to save my first XCOM experience for the new game but with it being so far out I'm not sure if I can hold out.

Xenonauts is looking pretty sexy too.

Chapter 1: Welcome to Erf!
Jan. 1st to Jan. 18th 1999

Excerpt from mission log UFO-2:
Rentahamster: "Target down! Whatever it was."

One would think that a clandestine organization such as X-Com would have the best and the brightest, equipped with the latest in body armor and weaponry, right? Yes, one would expect that. And be sorely disappointed. While our two Interceptor fighters most certainly were the best Earth had to offer, the troops themselves were a bit more green than I would have liked. Much like the base, there was work to be done before they would be the elite fighting team Earth needed. I spoke with the base engineers, who suggested an expansion of both the Living Quarters and General Stores, which seemed normal. The science team added a request for what they called an Alien Containment Unit. They had plans and all for it. Sometimes, it's better not to ask questions, like how they knew what was needed to contain alien lifeforms.

geoscape_003.png
geoscape_004.png

I also had the stores cleaned out to make room for more missiles and rifles. Now, I am a man of taste, and I do like a good Pistol, but when going up against who knows what, you want stopping power and automatic firing, and that means a rifle. I also requested more science personnel and engineers, as well as four new troops to hold the base when Skyranger-1 was out. That and a little surprise I got through some unofficial channels...

At 21:43 Zulu on January 1st, an alarm rang out throughout the facility. "UFO DETECTED! UFO DETECTED!"

geoscape_005.png

Immediately Interceptor-1 was scrambled and it gave us the first visual of an extraterrestrial craft. It was a flying saucer. But as soon as the Interceptor launched its Avalanche missiles, the UFO sped off and was lost somewhere over Africa. I suppose they weren't used to being challenged like this, but I have to admit, I would have liked to see that one downed. Still, forcing it to retreat is still a win.

geoscape_008.png
geoscape_009.png

It was a few days later that the science team presented me with a working prototype of a basic laser weapon. They suggested to design a Laser Pistol off its design. We had no idea what we'd be facing at this point, but more firepower sounded like a good idea.

geoscape_022.png

January 9th 1999 is another landmark day in X-Com. First contact. The alarm rang out again, and immediately Interceptor-1 was sent after UFO-2. Two clean hits with the Avalanche missiles and the UFO met the Italian ground. Hard. That we actually could take them down was a big relief. The eggheads had a bet going that the UFOs would be shielded and impervious to our weapons.

geoscape_024.png
geoscape_026.png

But now it was time for X-Com's first UFO salvaging operation: Crash Site-2

geoscape_028.png

(Note: I apologize for the lack of action shots, I need to find out how to rebind Ctrl+F5 in DOSBox to something I can hit fast left-handed.)

I don't think I'll ever get used to sitting around while other men fight and die for me. But when Sinatar call out that there was a target, everyone at Vanguard base had their eyes on the satellite feed. there it was, a real life alien. And it looked like a stereotypical "Grey" from UFO-lore.

tactical_002.png

Sinatar fired, but the shot barely hurt it, luckily Rentahamster hit it in the eye, getting the first confirmed alien kill of the war. What followed was almost a by the book search and destory. Buildings were swept, but there were no other aliens in sight. The team moved to the crashed UFO, which was smoldering good. Unfortunately, it was at the very door of the craft that we got to see the firepower we were up against. Another alien came out the door and caught TheJollyCorner off guard, he shot, but missed. The alien hit him square in the chest, and he was dead.

tactical_005.png

But the alien wasn't done yet, as it used the automatic door of the UFO to perform hit and run attacks, taking down Sinatar as well. It was about now that Myke Greywolf kicked the door down, and shot at the alien. However, it took another full round from Narag to finish the job. The last alien died, and the wreck was ours.

The debriefing showed what we had suspected: That even humanity's best Rifles were not that effective against these aliens. Those laser pistols were sorely needed... Narag and Rentahamster both got promoted to Sergeant. Being the only soldiers who actually killed an alien will do that.

geoscape_029.png
geoscape_030.png

I took up the firepower issue with the science team, and got a look at the damage our foe's weapons could do. Rudimentary examination told us two things: TheJollyCorner now had a hole where his chest used to be, and that it looked like it was burned away. More research was needed to find out more. However, first things first...

geoscape_031.png

We really needed those Laser Rifles, but while the prototype was being finalized, Laser Pistols were set to be built in the workshop, hoping to phase out the Rifle before the next ground sortie. By luck or negligence, we didn't see another UFO until just after midnight on January 18th, which provided a unique opportunity.

geoscape_032.png

The Skyranger was sent out at first light. It was a gamble, but capturing an intact UFO would be a great prize, but at a great risk, too. Luckily, everyone had a Laser Pistol available now. That would have to do.

geoscape_037.png
tactical_007.png

To be continued...

(Notes: I really need to find a way to get good screenshots in tactical view. How do you rebind the capture button in DOSBox? Preferably to a key X-Com doesn't use. Also, I think I'll try to keep this one on a bit more of a strategic level. everyone does the tactical level, which is cool, but I'd like to show the decisions made on the bigger scale, too. The Global Commander is the main character in this one.

I took a peak at what's coming up in that mission. It's a medium scout. This'll be fun.

Oh, and frontieruk? You can't see if from my images, but you've got massive strength in my game. You are Heavy Weapons Guy with a HE Autocannon.)

I did a test run with a couple meats last night before I deploy the feared GAF Strike Team.

So... I guess I forgot some of the controls for the PS1 version (and how sensitive it can be).

One of my rookies had a clear shot at a Sectoid. I clicked to choose an auto shot. It somehow switched to Throw. I thought I hit the right button to go back and choose Auto Shot. I did not. Rookie fucking threw his rifle at the Sectoid.

Rookie was dead quickly during the alien's turn.

It's ok, though. Just gotta work out these little kinks. ;)

I almost spit out my drink.

There's nary a game producing so many awesome stories. :bow X-Com.

If there's replacement cannon fodder needed, I volunteer.

Oh daaaaaaaaamn! I was the first military casualty of McNum's historic X-COM project! :{
Sorry about that, got careless. I didn't think the alien would exit the UFO like that, but it did. Lost two soldiers off a boneheaded mistake. In other words: X-Com! Where "Beginner" means "A mistake will only cost you a quarter of your men in a mission."

Also, when I get Laser Rifles researched, what's a good thing to go for next? The Med-Kit is nice, but... I think I want armor first. No first aid will heal "missing torso". Then there's good old elerium that needs to be researched at some point. If I get the meduim scout, of course.

I would assign a bunch of scientists to the medkit, and all the others to what you think is the most important project. Then you could always boost the medkit one when needed.

I've been doing my push ups, pull ups, and sit ups in preparation for this moment. If someone needs a new recruit, sign me up.

Yeah, got a living quarter just up and running, so I should get some more scientists. I'm thinking I want Alien Alloys and Med-kit next. Alien Alloys unlock so much of the good stuff. Like Elerium, which I still need to get a sample of. Silly question, though, you can change a project in progress? You just click on it, right?

Also, a little something that worries me. It's Jan 18th in my game. I know Terror Missions usually are monthly. This recovery mission had better go really well, because the Skyranger might not get much rest... Ooh, I should buy a few Stun Rods, too, in case it's Sectoids. It would be so cool to get a Psi Sectoid before Feb. 1st, but it's a wild longshot to even try.

Not sure about this, but I think Psi Sectoids come only later in the game (after
Floaters
and
Snakemen
, and maybe
Mutons
too).

After a few minor sightings and a destroyed alien ship by one of our Interceptors our Skyranger team had its first opportunity to perform an SKC (search kill collect) mission. The alien ship landed near the HIVEMIND base. Conveniently. Our recruits would have the advantage of knowing the terrain.

geoscape_003.png

The Directorate against my best advice ordered that recruit Minsc would be equipped with the Rocket Launcher.

tactical_013.png

Recruit Salsa proved to be an excellent scout in this mission. Keeping his cool while opening the battle field for his teammates.

tactical_014.png

Recruit Billy Chu had the first confirmed sighting of a Sectoid. He proceeded to communicate the green code through his comm unit to the rest of the team. Our implanted biometric sensors showed a spike on every individual bioparameters. It began.

tactical_015.png

Billy Chu had the first killing. The Sectoid retaliated but Billy Chu made the critical decision of choosing Snap Shot to save TUs in order to repeat fire if needed. This proved to be lethally effective in his behalf.

tactical_016.png

Every team mate muttered the Agency motto after the confirmed killing. "Man shall prevail!" Billy Chu though made a misstep. Perhaps overconfident about his reaction skills he walked towards an open window. This time his decision proved to be fatal to his detriment.

A Sniper Sectoid was able to shoot through the window blowing the head of recruit Billy Chu.

tactical_017.png

Recruit Archnemesis sped through the field intercepting the Sectoid and managed to surprise him with an aimed shot of the rifle that wounded him and finished off with a pistol shot through the Alien's skull.

This time there was only silence after the confirmation code of the killing was transmitted through the unit comm.

tactical_018.png

In the southwest sector of the field Scout Salsa was finally able to find the landing site of the UFO. He waited for backup and Recruit Minsc was the first teamate to reach the Alien ship door. Recruits Corto and Stumpokapow advised through the comm to wait for their arrival at the site before storming in. Recruit Snuggler meanwhile was searching house to house for some stray alien.

Minsc shouted through the comms: "NO. I have a plan!" And stormed into the ship bowels. He encountered two surprised Sectoids and just before they were able to react Minsc shouted to recruit Salsa: "RUN!" And an huge rocket explosion inside the UFO followed.

tactical_019.png

Silence.

tactical_020.png

The team embarked on the Skyranger to return to HIVEMIND.

tactical_021.png

Just before the ship lifted off Salsa shouted. "MAN WILL PREVAIL" With tears running down his tormented face.

geoscape_004.png

The directorate sent recruits Minsc and Billy Chu families the usual compensation package with a Terra Medal for Valorous Sacrifice in the Battle Field and a personal letter from our President. Recruit Archnemesis was promoted. Replacements are on their way. The war continues.

As soon as I can find where I put the MP3 files of the music from the Playstation version (so I can make the game play that instead of the MIDI music) I think I'll dabble in this again.

edit: hm, no need for that, it apparently was not out of the reach of google.

Man...such low stamina. I'll probably get exhausted traversing half the map....if I even survive that long. At least the rest of the stats are decent! (woot....the accuracy!)

Do me proud! Go and slay them aliens!

Couldn't sleep, so decided to run that mission. Meaning here comes...

Chapter 1: Welcome to Erf! Part 2
Jan. 18th to Jan. 20th 1999

This was out first chance to see an alien craft up close and intact, but truth be told, I did not expect half my men to return. This was most likely a one way trip for most of them. Or so I assumed. Which is why I had ordered that special surprise: A remotely operated mini-tank with a rocket launcher.

tactical_008.png

The Skyranger had landed within sight of the landed UFO, and it was time to deploy. The Tank went first, checking the LZ for hostiles, and if need be, take fire. The combat role of a Rocket HWP, however is twofold. It is a disposable scout, yes, but it is also...

"Alert! Hostile spotted!"
"Warning! Deploying missile!"
tactical_011.png
tactical_013.png

"Stand by... Target neutralized. Continuing search."

...a tank. It can clear out building AND aliens.

The team split into two squads, each approaching the UFO from a different side. The landed UFO was bigger than the one shot down, meaning risk of more aliens. However, this caution was unneeded, as the only alien outside was now buried under a house.
tactical_019.png

The AI on the HWP might still need a few tweaks, as it checked for hostiles by blowing up yet another house. To be fair, though, it probably was the quickest way to do that.
tactical_017.png
tactical_018.png

As they approached the UFO outer door, Sgt. Narag call for smoke, and tossed a smoke grenade to cover their entry. A lesson learned in blood during the UFO-2 recovery.
tactical_021.png

This allowed the team to send in four men to take out any aliens on board. In a classic pincer maneuver, Thnikkaman and LuffyZoro snuck around and took out each enemy with an admirable precision.
tactical_033.png
tactical_036.png
tactical_038.png

Just like that, mission completed. And it was here we first recovered that elusive element that we now call Elerium-115. But at the time, it was just "those glowing rocks that power that UFO we captured".
geoscape_042.png
geoscape_043.png

Thnikkaman earned himself a promotion to Sergeant with that UFO assault as well as Rentahamster who saw himself promoted to Captain.

The aliens, though, didn't like us stealing their ride...
geoscape_045.png

Just as it started to look like things were going well for us here, the "dangerous gas leak" in Buenos Aires happened. You remember, it was all over the news, yet very few images from it. Well, here's what really happened in Buenos Aires January 20th 1999...
geoscape_048.png
tactical_039.png

(Notes: I found a way to rebind the capture command in DOSBox. Press CTRL+F1 to get to the keybind menu.

Also, woohoo, a terror mission with greyshirts and laser pistols. This is going to be difficult. Didn't get the Stun Rods ready, so no really early Psi, no matter what. And if there IS a Psi alien there, he gets HWP'd. I hope.

That's what I get for complaining to myself that this mission went too smoothly...)

"Thnikkaman earned himself a promotion to Sergeant with that UFO assault as well as Rentahamster who saw himself promoted to Captain."

I'm from Buenos Aires...

...and I say kill 'em all!

Yoink! Now Chapter 2 has a name. That's from Starship Troopers, isn't it?

Just to confirm, so ok the difficulty bug is in the Steam version however since I installed the XCOM Extender I should not be affected right?

Anyway, after reading about the new x-com game my nostalgia flared right up and I decided to play the original yet again. Even though I've played it like a hundred times I never get very far. Maybe this time, in any event I'll have fun... man I love this game.

Love this game. Wish I had time to get a game going, did one earlier this year.

I realise however that recruits are hard to come by these days, so I put my name in the hat in case it gets rough out there. I believe my bravery stands for itself for such an act.
