Yeah, it's the one shoujo "hit" as it were. But I mean, they also made a real movie as well, so that's how big it is.
But look at it this way - KnT wasn't even released on BD when it first came out. That seems to be indicative of how relevant the home market is to the people who might buy this stuff

I suppose you'll have to take solace in those Tamayura numbers.

It's hard to blame them for making otaku pandering shows with such narrow profit margins, it also doesn't help that the employees don't get paid all that much and are salaried so no overtime pay.

Oh yeah caj, I checked out Angel Tales 1. It was pleasant not seeing bouncing T&A every 10 seconds, and the story is pretty entertaining.

Awesome! Enjoy it. Its just a cute show. Nothing special, but the character designs are fun and the personalities of each girl are what you would expect. Butl ike I said, stay far away from season two (Tenshi no Shippo Chu)

Chihayafuru 13:
Well, that went differently than I expected. I certainly didn't think the tournament would turn out like that. It was nice to see more of Arata and get some more info on what he was up to during the past few years. I liked seeing his relationship with his grandfather, and there were some nice emotional moments.

Would you have bought Chihayafuru if it was released here on Bluray?

Anyway, I don't think anyone animates a show like Chihayafuru and expects it to sell well. If it drives manga sales (which are pretty good anyway) then that's fine, it's accomplished something.

Yeah, I would buy it if they released it over here. I've been a big fan of Asaka for a long time, so I would have probably bought it even if I knew almost nothing about it.

Persona 4: The Cartoon 14:

Mysterious Fox works in mysterious ways.

God Tier episode. Would watch again. 5/5. Best-selling anime is best anime. Haters gonna hate.

Yip yip motherfuckers!

Daily Lives of High School Boys - 1

Interesting enough to keep watching. I didn't think this show was going to be funny but I was wrong.

Mawaru Penguindrum 1 - 2

After seeing this quite a bit in the last thread, I'm impressed. Those penguins keep cracking me up! The OP and ED music is good stuff. Will keep watching to the end.

Sailor Moon 37

7ZNWVl.jpg

Such an odd episode really. Sailor Moon is either fun wacky antics or serious dorama business and this episode was honestly really neither. There were some fun, cute, ditsy Usagi moments and a pretty sweet insult of Usagi from Kunzite but as a whole this episode was really underwhelming.

It failed to really move the story along, although there were one cool tidbit involving Artemis and Luna
that son of a gun Artemis was stringing along poor Luna like that
and the episode basically existed to show that Usagi has to change herself to match her
true princess
self, but of course not really because Usagi is always going to be Usagi.

I don’t want to say this episode was pointless but the enjoyment I derive from most of Sailor Moon was really nowhere to be seen in this episode. I just think in general it was really weird to do episodes 34-35 the way they did, specifically getting all the senshi into the story and then just cutting it abrupt and going back to the youma of the week stuff. The way the show is structured it honestly doesn’t seem like the girls are trying to do a whole lot to
actually save Tuxedo Mask and eliminate the big bad while doing so. Usagi and the girls spent this episode learning how to be princesses instead of actually doing shit.

On a side note I wonder where the idea of running with toast in your mouth being cute/moe actually came from. It’s one of those things that is (supposedly) really cute/moe in anime, but running with a piece of hard buttered toast in your mouth in real life is dangerous as you might choke or worse yet drop the toast, and it certainly isn't cute at all.

But...chihaya isn't even shoujo, it's josei.
Same difference! In fact, josei audiences not caring about discs is what killed noitaminA.

I suppose you'll have to take solace in those Tamayura numbers.
5k sales... I suppose. Taking bets on what will come to America first - Aoi Hana or Tamayura (and the OVAs) and I really don't know. Maybe Wandering Son is the darkhorse, assuming the mangas have been selling here.

You'd probably be right. Considering what I've read on Japan and women's/men's roles that is, although I'd really like to learn more. As I mentioned earlier there was quite an interesting discussion at a The Girl Who Leapt Through Time screening I went too, but I am sadly ignorant on the subject.
The thing is that there's an economy based on letting people fuck, but that's because of multi-generational homes and banging in a room next to your mother's or father's room is probably the most awkward thing in the world.
Either way, sex seems to be treated as something illicit and to be hidden. One easy question to ask is this - do they teach Japanese kids about condoms in school and at what age?

Revolutionary Girl Utena Movie

I knew I was in for something great given how many good things I'd heard about the film over the years and I wasn't disappointed. Loved the character/costume design changes, the crazy architecture, and just how wonderfully visual the movie was.

It was so interesting to see an extrovert Anthy rather than the TV's introvert version. It allowed her to become so much more of a character rather than a trophy.

I was fine with the imagery up until the carwash but I adjusted shortly after. Won't lie, the entire scene on the road with Anthy behind the wheel was fabulous. Also, I adored the scene where Utena makes peace with Touga and is able to move on. Sad and I thought well executed.

:lol at the Akio & Nanami appearances

You need to rewatch the tv show sometime.

Probably because when you link a shitty video which looks like a blown up and heavily compressed 120x120 vivo format video from 1998, it makes people blind and they start seeing CG?

Maybe he was just feeling nostalgic for better times, when video files with more than 300 horizontal lines were mind-blowing and studios like Gainax were actually good.

Merchandising

Exactly. Don't forget those pictures of otaku rooms stuffed to the rafters with glorious merchandise!

Then again really popular shows have much better sales (relatively speaking), as we've seen in the sales charts. It's all very helpfully explained here: http://2chan.us/wordpress/2010/05/03/2ch-sales-numbers/

20,001~25,000
Properties with many strong, ardent, and powerful supporters. Major stars with deep fanbases.
Ex: Air, Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS, Clannad, Hetalia, etc

25,001~35,000
Titles in between the above and below categories that stand as influential and steadfast titles.
Ex: Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh, G.I.T.S. SAC 2nd GIG, Initial D 4th Stage, Fate/Stay Night, etc

35,001~50,000
New leaders that become the talk of the industry. Incredible flamewars break out between supporters of titles of this group and titles in the next tier.
Ex: Full Metal Alchemist, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Code Geass, Macross F, Gundam 00, etc

50,001~100,000
In a completely different class from the rest. Godly sales.
Ex: Gundam SEED, theatrical anime (Kara no Kyokai, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), Bakemonogatari, etc

100,001~
Theatrical anime or anime made for the public at large. The stars of the industry.
Ex: Ghibli anime, Eva films, Zeta Gundam: A New Translation, Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, The World of Golden Eggs, etc

I can't say it's a very profitable business for most companies though, especially if a lot of companies are all targeting one particular niche audience at the same time.

Then again, they're hardly the only industry with questionable profit margins. The American Airlines lose like $2 billion a year and make absolutely no profit.

Symphogear 02

Lesbians.

Liking the music more and more, tone seems all over the place. Switching between bubbly girl love and serious existenialism. Tsubasa is clearly damaged goods, I don't see things ending well for her.

So was there ever a time when the overall anime market looked at least relatively "strong"?
e: never mind, I really can't figure out how to phrase this question

So was there ever a time when the overall anime market looked at least relatively "strong"?
I don't know, but I do know that back in the mid-2000's nearly every show was getting a release by some anime company and they did a pretty good job flooding the US market, and presumably their own market.

Considering there were 159 anime titles produced in 2005, 205 anime titles produced in 2006, 200 titles in 2007, 153 titles in 2008 and 141 titles in 2009 it's pretty clear that there was some kind of bubble which burst rather spectacularly.

[Daily Lives of High School Boys ep. 01]

That :firehawk scene at the end made me lose it. Will definitely continue watching this.
:firehawk is losing its meaning with you guys misusing it :P

Another sales thing: Insufficient Blu-ray Sales of Hidan no Aria To Produce Second Season
If only they didn't fuck up that one disc release, then they wouldn't need any more.

Rinne no Lagrange Ep.01

With the exception of the few moments of fanservice (Which the next episode seems to have more of), I really enjoyed the show. The colors are vibrant and the protagonist seems interesting.
The fact that she doesn't get all emotional upon being given the challenge set forth is refreshing; the show even has a reasoning behind Madoka knowing how to fight and defend herself.
We all know what happens
when she ties up her hair like that.

This cracks me up everytime, animegaf must have some amazing fanservice filter when it doesn't involve loli's or something. :lol
Subtle and classy.

Persona 4 14 - So many god damned S-links. Next week is the
school trip
, so maybe some hype?

Still, 13 is probably the best this show is going to get. It was the one "non-phone it in" episode of the series probably.

Persona 4: The Cartoon 14:

Yip yip motherfuckers!

Indeed, an excellent episode all round.

Edit: and holy shit, if next weeks episode is what I think it is!:
Persona 3 land, Port Island school stip!

Although Tamayura wasn't quite on par with KnT, that's not too bad relatively. Also seems like even KnT anime sales were less than stellar.

And I'm sure you know the answer to all three of those series.

Really off-topic, sorry, but I didn't wanna start a new thread for what, I imagine, will be an "question asked, question answered" type thing:

What anime is this from? http://i.imgur.com/0lhty.gif

I got the gif from a thread a couple months ago and it cracks me up; I believe the whole movie has similar animal-fighting antics and I gotta know the name.

Thanks!

Now expect the following after being quoted.

1. It's boring, not worth your time
2. It's great, best comedy in a while
3. If you decide to watch it then wait for the shorter 12 episode edited airing

My advice: you will not find a conclusive answer in this thread, so save some time, watch the first episode and form your own opinion

Persona 4: The Fanservice 13/14

Very good episodes, fun! :D . It's a little bit tragic that this show only shine in the comedy moments but oh well, next week is going to be epic.

The man might be destined to be a class-b chump/hardcore friendzone, but I doubt that in particular will happen.

Arata is the sexy idol who's had the benefit of not actually being in her life, anyways. It was over since episode one.

Haha, this scene will never get old. Never. But, yeah, I hope I'm wrong there.

Taichi isn't perfect, but I would argue that his character has seen a good deal of growth towards maturity since he got involved in the karuta club - as he has settled into his role as the leader of the club, encouraging and supporting Chihaya and everyone else on the team, he has increasingly learned how to keep an eye out for the needs of others and respond sensitively to them. This is the main reason why I like him as a character. (I should add I like Arata as well!)

Also, I have a hard time believing Taichi has conscious romantic intentions towards Chihaya, given the attitude he takes to Arata's interest in Chihaya (e.g., in episode 13
he hands off the passed out Chihaya to Arata without any overt sign of jealousy
). I'm sure the suppressed romantic tension will boil over eventually and the characters will have to deal with the fallout of that, but that will not be Taichi's fault alone, since none of the central triangle have been clearly communicating what their feelings for each other are. It's doubtful any of them are clear on their own feelings themselves.

I'm a few more eps in since my post, and I can agree with you a bit, aside from his romantic intents, which are so very much there, man--Wanting Chihaya to realize that he's been the one in front of her etc... etc...

The thing is, while I'm seeing that they're both put in largely positive lights, Taichi's the only one to have received overtly negative characterization. This may be to, as dresden pointed out, exemplify how Arata is the idol that's not actually in her life, but glorified in her imagination--
her letter to him calling him a 'Karuta God' that she idolizes
--but I can't even really agree with that as it was the flashback arc in the beginning is what did the initial characterization--Both being there. And with the only scene that I've seen with Arata in the present, it
didn't quickly give him some negativity to make up for it, no, but reafirmed how much of a 'good guy' he was; moody and introverted, but the first few eps were to show the viewer that he's only masking in those scenarios, I believe.

I think KnT did around 5-10k on DVD. At least S1 anyway.
