Thermae Romae 1 & 2

It has a cool theme but it feels more like novelty and would wear off after a while. Three episodes seems about right

Huh, I just heard about the Bandai thing (it probably came up here ages ago).

I found this quote amusing:
"The pricing range for our products kept dropping in Western countries, and people tended only to buy sets with very reasonable prices, which we understand is what fans want, but it lead us to a different strategy than what Japanese licensors wanted," he remarked. "So we always had a problem [with licensors wanting something different than what consumers wanted]."
Even with 5 people, it wasn't worth keeping the company going to churn out anime here. It seems that the disc model is going to die sooner rather than later.

(Also, Nichijou gets thrown back to Japan. I wonder if anyone will bother with K-On and Nichijou at this point)

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou: Quiet Country Café - Episodes 1 & 2

That's a really beautiful looking scene. I usually skip over all of the old anime stuff, but I might have to check this one out.

No worries brah, just bumped "listen to pizzaroll/aigis more often" one spot up on my list of things to do. The direction & visual composition are so killer. Also, I figured it would be good, and weird, but not this funny.

Barring maybe Mononoke or something it is easily the best thing they've ever aired. Which makes me want to rage-break something when I think about [C].

Hopefully Kenji Nakamura can redeem himself with his next project. I would hate for him to have burnt himself out so quickly.

If the next Nakamura show has a Denki Groove soundtrack again then it will be automagically good. Introducing me to their music is on the list of reasons of why Trapeze is awesome.

The Knight in the Area 02: Wait, the white team are supposed to be the starting XI?
Their defence is pure shit. Why the fuck didn't they man-mark Kakeru when it was obvious Suguru was solely testing him? Those were at least five or six times he got the best out of the backline. These guys are rubbish.

Speaking of that, wouldn't it be better to play Kakeru as a right winger? Even ignoring his awful left foot it's not like he lacks speed, and the flashbacks make it sound like he is pretty great at creating chances and getting behind the defence. He may lack definition, but it's not like he couldn't be an asset to the team. Suguru is a fucking dipshit; he keeps trying to play him out of position and scolds him when he doesn't perform up to expectations?

Suguru you are an idiot and I don't know why you act as interim coach.
BUT I SUPPOSE YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT ANYMORE LOLOLOL

Kakeru was the striker in the games they played together since childhood, and his ability to see the final pass and sprint over the defense and finish is why he's put as a striker by Suguru. I haven't actually seen this episode so i'm not sure if they explained the more subtle stuff in the anime. Probably not. :x

Knight in the Area 02: Fuck this shit.
Its going be another goddamn fucking Cross Game sap story. Fuck, Fuck, Fuck.

I think they mentioned it, but it was very brief. It's just his decision-making in front of goal is atrocious, especially when it's obvious he could be contributing much more to the team playing on the flanks and linking Suguru's passes to a more natural striker. Pippo Inzaghi Kakeru is not.

I guess it's just too difficult to create drama in football fiction unless your main character is a ten or a nine.

Symphogear 2

Still good, but what the hell happened to Hibiki's heartless form? That was awesome.

Anyway, mostly an organization exposition episode, but that cliffhanger will have me coming back for 3. I think I've seen enough to say I'll see this through to the end provided it doesn't get bad. Really love the style.

Yeah, I agree with you. Especially having such a weak link like the inability to use the left foot is harmful for a striker that needs to be able to change pace all the time and finish with either leg. I think it's more Suguru thinking that he needs to get over his fear of the left foot so he forces him into the position. But yeah, I haven't read much of the manga at all because I realized only 9 volumes were translated and there's 26 volumes out in japan. The manga's art is really good though and the story bits feel a lot more atmospheric than the anime's adaptation.

Show was trolling. It'll be really funny if they troll again next week.

Persona 4 14

This show is so fucking good, and i've been anticipating the content in the next episode with bated breath.
Are the positive reactions to P4 recently genuine, or is it the kind of thing where people relish in the awfulness?

Persona 4: The Cartoon is an awful anime. As a Persona 4 fanservice piece, however, it hits in every fucking spot. I bet all those DVD/Blu-Ray sales are not from the traditional otaku market, but from fans of the game.

I enjoy it but I honestly don't think it's anything more than a mediocre show that just happens to be based on one of my favorite JRPGs ever. The fan service is pretty great.

I find the show is better when they're not dealing with the mysteries and just doing some silly slice of life routine. And the deadpan-ness of the main character is oddly hilarious at times.

It is absolute heaven for P4 fans. Finding out more about the characters you love, seeing your favorite scenes in animated form, etc; it's all awesome. A recent episode even lampshaded the "silent protagonist" bit and turned it into one of the most epic and feel good scenes in recent memory.

Non-game fans probably wouldn't "get it" and see it as nothing more than an average production (which it is in a lot of ways, but w/e).

Eh, the P4 anime is still junk. They just managed to eek out one good episode by showing up to work sober one day.

For some reason, a podcast brought up the 2006? movie version of The Producers and that's what Persona has been for the most part - the laziest of lazy adaptations.

^what Dresden said

Episode 1 shows us that this woman goes all manly into testosterone overdrive or something in order to do her awesome work. Episode 2 shows us the inner thoughts of he-man woman hater guy to hammer the point home that she faces sexism in the workplace because she's a Strong Woman. If they hook up, I'll punch my monitor.

I dunno, maybe I wasn't paying attention (to be fair, I wasn't :p) or it gets all subtle and nuanced later, but I thought that was pretty stupid. And I don't like the look of it, which never helps.

It's cool that she's not a high school student fighting demons by night or w/e though, I guess.

I chalk it up as a) representations of women in Japan and b) there's only so many ways to show workplace sexism - either the women have agency or they become victims.

Squid Girl's voice can make you want to buy anything!

I will buy this. Whatever it is.

If the disc model dies I guess i will stop buying anime. I will also be quite depressed.

Disc-based media can't die until I have my precious Angel's Egg on blu-ray ;-;

so basically never
Well, the disc model will always exist in Japan I presume. How else are they going to gouge people over 70 bucks per movie?

And Angel's Egg has like 5 lines of dialogue total or something so you can [hypothetically] import it with or without subs and be okay!

Knight in the Area 2:
Another very strong episode. I've been waiting for this material ever since the anime was announced, and I can't wait for the next episode. I thought they handled the scrimmage game well, and I liked seeing Kakeru's abilities on display.

Of course, The Knight in the Area has now entered the Adachi zone. God damnit... well, if you're going to crib, crib from the best.

Well, yeah. I do think that the series uses the influence well, and attacks some of the subject matter in very different ways than Adachi does. I'll be interested in seeing how the anime handles future stuff like that.
