Real Pic January!

When I first moved out to LA, I had no friends and spent several months pretty desperately trying to make any friends. I hung out with co workers who were pretty cool, but we didn't click all that much.

School helped me make the (best) friends I have now - we all studied art so there was a common interest, and so with that came other things we were interested in (video games, movies, cartoons, etc.) and it just built from there. When I went through a breakup it was actually one of them who called me to say "let's hang out".

That all started because I put myself out there to meet people who I had no idea what they were like. I remember organizing group hangouts just to get out of the apartment and BE with people. So I say all that to say, I understand completely Steamlord where you're coming from. It's a lonely time, but only for as long as you want it to be. Go out to clubs, meet new people that have similar interests as you; coworkers might be a good place to start.

Otherwise....better start a thread about meeting up with GAFfers. :P

I'm sure there are, but my social anxiety drives me to hole up in my room. I guess I have no one to blame but myself.
Ugh I hate myself for this too.
I've been trying to reconnect with my school best friend for ages but yet to do anything about it :/ (I've finished college, barely met him during that).

If it helps anyone here, I used to suffer from really bad general anxiety up until I was 23 or 24. What really helped me was ballroom dancing since not approaching people wasn't an option.

Another thing that really helped was a woman trying to seduce me several times over the course of a summer, and wasn't taking no for an answer. Confronting her about it took away a lot of my anxiety. Not sure why though.

did you not want to be seduced?

That's something you simply have to get over, and that starts by just putting yourself out there. Of course you'll be shaking and having a cold sweat while trying to introduce yourself, but always remember...what harm can they do to you? You don't know them anyway so why should you care if they don't like you?

H.Protagonist: Yeah, it's pretty tough. Having social anxiety certainly doesn't help. Ah well.

Ashes: Thanks! My birthday is on the 15th.

Would you be up for a Gaf meetup? Those to seem to be more frequent now. At least then you kind of know the people. ;)

Guess I'll join the party.

Welcome! You've joined at the eve of our destruction, it seems. We're closing in on 20,000 posts. :D

I can understand that... one reason I'm nervous about moving again is having to make new friends :/ It has always been a bit difficult for me to make friends, although I know it is entirely my fault on that.
My cat isn't plotting to kill me, but sometimes she bites me when she's playing and she gets this look on her face that says she thinks I might be good to eat. ._.

Anyway, happy birthday Steamlord!

It's hard when you get older. Work becomes your life and every time I got to a bar and chat up a girl hoping to make a connection she thinks I'm hitting on her or I get her phone number. :( It's never just 'friends'. I guess that seems weird these days.

P.S. Don't trust the cats. They like our taste. O_O

You must have work friends at least, right? I know it's not the same as longtime friends but they're friends nonetheless :(

Well, XSEED is very small and most are married with kids, so it's hard for them to just go out whenever. I do hang out with one guy, but I don't want him to turn into a life blanket for going out or smother him. :/

Thanks, everyone. I guess I should try harder. The thing is, I've been trying since around fifth grade or so and it gets kind of exhausting after a while. And before I started college, I still had all the friends I made before I got like this. I figured suddenly not having any friends would give me more of an incentive to meet people, but if anything it's just made it harder.

H.Protagonist: I think a meetup would be fun, though in reality I'd probably be way more reserved meeting people in person. Regardless, I don't live in a very GAF-populated place, so I don't think it's an option anyway.

Take it slower man. Patience is great for most things in life. and being sociable actually helps you live longer as well.

Double post. Oh well.

Always good to push yourself a bit more (I need to take this advice myself). A neogaf meetup might actually be easiest because we all have a common denominator. If social communications fail, everyone can always wax poetic about the shenanigans that go on in here. ;) Where do you live, if I may ask?

Yeah, I met Nintendoll at her hot dog stand on Wednesday, and I met Ivysaur, Henry Gale and one other gaffer at a writing group last night.

Nintendoll is a hot dog stand lady? I guess your stalking confirms that. I say stalking... well I mean stalking. ;P

Out of curiosity, how was it? She's not here, I don't think, so go all out!

Oklahoma.

Oklahoma.

Google says that's only 4628 miles or 7448 kilometers to London city, where I am. I tell you what, if you start walking tomorrow, and I started walking the day after, then we can meet up by about January 15th 2013.*

*Pending end of the world or weather conditions.

Oklahoma.

Bit in the middle of nowhere. A friend of mine actually lives right there. I expect him out to Cali on business soon (and for a visit). He claims that you guys have bars with live bulls to ride. Jealous.

Hmmm... Sounds intriguing. Where be the theaters mentioned? I'd definitely be interested, but I don't have a car and no buses run south after 7:30PM abouts, so it's hard for me. Still interested!

Think it's just vBulletin down for maintenance. :P

Oh ok. Hope it won't be down too long, there's people expecting MY HELP. XD

Also HI REALPICGAF.

I have severe anxiety issues too but not socially really, when I meet people, I just wonder what I can help with. LOL. Like if I saw an old lady trying to reach a liter bottle of sprite in the store and its out of reach, I'd rush over and say no no no, let me! I'd grab that thing and put in her basket without hesitation. I do this often lol.

If I find a lost dog I'd rush over and help it and try to find the owner. I did this several times in my life lmao. Its fun!

And lets see, oh! Sometimes when someone is speaking in sign language, I'd acknowledge and let them know I can see/understand the language too. :D Deaf are happy to meet someone working at a store that knows sign language. You have no idea!

Of course I'm also one of those ladies that would sternly tell a kid to stop running. xD Darn those skater shoes.

Basically when I meet people, I'd just be myself and be incredibly stupidly honest and dorky and they wouldn't even know how to respond and I'd just keep at it and they just lose their "barrier" with me and be themselves whether if I don't like it or not lol.

Everyone isn't perfect either, that's the part that makes the social thing easy.

You know sign language? ASl? could come in handy for a certain somebody writing a novel with a character who signs. Ahem. ahem. I'll let him ask.

Oh, I nearly forgot. I wrote a story about a person who was mute by choice; it did well on gaf, but got me into a bit of trouble with a real life friend. :P

Well she invited me to visit the stand, and several other GAF members have gone there as well. The hot dog was really good!

You are Marshall from How I Met Your Mother

? Well I'm a real life born deaf sort of person so yeah I know sign language. Its pretty important to be expressive you know!

Oh crap really, dang it. I need to see that show. I got shows on my movie backlog too. So many good stuff to see!

There are a lot of Ghibli films that I haven't seen, so for me it's more about making the date work than the film itself.

Princess Mononoke is my favorite though.

I know it's a gray area whether or not it's a Ghibli film or not but do not see Grave of the Fireflies in a group of people at all. It is the single saddest most depressing movie I have ever seen in my life.

asl. American Sign language. Not the... oh never mind. I dug that hole my self.

Um... yeah. Just say sign language and you're fine. ASL is actually a type of sign language. There's SEE (Standard Easy English or something like it) and the like that attempts to replicate the english spoken language. ASL isn't that, its basically a type of dialect which I don't really like using unless just doing it free speak or whatever but on paper its gnarly as fuck. Read like text messages for instance. :\

The anglers need your help!

Sup real pic folks

Hola.

P.S. You're cheating!

Really? I'd be up. The no car thing makes it hard, though. >_<

I like to recommend Grave of the Fireflies of Martyrs whenever somebody asks for a movie recommendation on facebook. Real-life trolling FTW.

Yeah, I wrote sign language as sign language, but a friend told me off. So I stopped doing that. :/

BSl, British Sign Language.... I'm in England. And I didn't really challenge her. I didn't know much about the subject.

You can DO BETTER than that. The names would give away enough info about them! You can be sneaky and say THE HAPPENING. :TWIST:

Really? I'd be up. The no car thing makes it hard, though. >_<

I'd be commuting from SD - I'd be happy to give you a ride.

I posted it in the other thread, but as far as movies go I'm not picky - The Cat Returns, My Neighbor the Yamadas, or Pom Poko would be the only ones I'd be "eh" over. Everything else....awesome!

I'm heading for bed, hopefully we can make this happen! I'll check back tomorrow. :)

Who is the person of the year?

XB9jQ.jpg

oh cool! What're you protesting? I'm always protesting. I didn't do tie day. I didn't do drunk day [well maybe I did, I can't remember] or animal-morph day. or childhood picture day. I'm protesting against protesters as well.
