Regarding the cop situation I think it's got a lot to do with media portrayal to be honest. In the UK we get massive amounts of coverage of US cops going way over the top with the violence. From shows like cops to standard television news, we see an awful lot of it. To be honest, for the longest time I wondered if it came down to the training, that somehow it made it acceptable to go in, mash shit up and ask questions later. (Specifically where that reduces the likelihood you / your squadmates gets hurt)
Sure, generalising is dumb, but when you never really see good examples of American police (especially as we obviously don't live there), it's hard to realise that there really is a good side sometimes.
