I'd love to be in on that conversation. "Um, boss? Forget all those things I said about you..."

Huntsman is in a pickle. He was popular in Utah but left the job to work for Obama, making him toxic there. And he didn't register on the national stage. I'm guessing he either goes into some kind of consulting/lobbying gig, or into perpetual campaign mode ala Romney over the past four years to gird up for the next run.

Don't go too far out on a limb there, Ghaleon!

If Obama gets re-elected and does well Huntsman is good to go. It puts him in a good position for a 2016 bid. I might imagine.

Yeah. I've always thought this campaign was more a springboard for 16. But then again, there will be a lot more stronger candidates next time like Daniels, Rubio, Christie etc., so who knows.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but if Obama wins re-election the Republicans are going to have a hard time winning in 2016 barring another bad recession. Obama will largely get credit for a recovering economy, something the next Democratic nominee will run on, and because of the increasing minority vote, will having an even easier time holding on to Western states such as NM, CO, and NV, and make states like VA and NC even more competitive.

are there any more real conservatives up and coming? You know, people who will actually change the party for good.

Mitch Daniels seems like the only one that I can think of, but he's not really up and coming. Rubio's the big up and coming GOP star, but from what little I've seen of him he seems like kind of a scumbag.

Huntsman is out. So now there will only be 5 candidates at the next debate. Perry will drop out after South Carolina and Gingrich's ego will bow to reality and probably quit too. It would be nice to have a debate with 3 candidates but if Romney has such a big lead at that point he may not even be interested anymore.

Actually I think they debates are going to get more interesting. With Romney, Gingrich, and Paul left I think we're going to see both Paul/Gingrich attack Romney. And there's only so much time Romney can fill with bumper sticker quotes with 3 people and 2 hours.

Not really. He's a boring, uncharismatic republican who used to work for Barrack Obama. I guess Huntsman figures he'll be "next up" in 2016 assuming Romney loses but 2016 will see a pretty potent crop of governors running most likely, from Chris Christie to Bob McDonnell (who should be Romney's VP choice imo). If Huntsman couldn't stand out in a field of crazy people, how will he stand out in a field of less-crazy people?

I agree with Kosmo. Huntsman wants a cabinet position, will probably try to get Sec State if he hasn't already been promised it. He's no good as VP. He was toast in NH, he really should have called it then but his pride probably prevented it.

I really think Romney should pick Mitch Daniels as his VP. He's got a strong conservative record and could help Romney pick up some swing midwestern states like Ohio and Indiana. He's also not an idiot and a gaffe machine as far as I know.

He's a tiny, bald man that will not shore up the social conservative base. He's also spending his last year in office pushing a right to work bill that that plays into the midwestern Republican governors' overreach.

He might actually upset them since he called for a "truce" on social issues. Even if he hasn't actually adhered to it, he's on the record for saying it and I suspect that wouldn't work in his favor.

I don't think for a second that Romney is the social conservative poison that people portray him to be. Social conservatives, particularly in the south, will gladly vote for Romney if they believe he has a chance to beat Obama. And if Romney picks someone with strong appeal to social conservatives, he risks alienating an even greater number of independents. As for being tiny and bald, well, Romney is the one who is supposed to look presidential (not necessarily the VP).

It makes sense, Huntsman and Romney were the most similar out of all the candidates in the republican field. Huntsman's attacks were purely political to differentiate himself.

Huntsman was pretty douchey at times to Romney. I know, I know, politics, but I would be like "screw your endorsement"
