I'd be fine with it not affecting the day to day episodes, but it doesn't even affect the other serious arcs.

Of all the shows to get this season, they chose that?! Awkward. Not to mention, it wont be until 2013 before they release it on disc I imagine.

This has been happening to me for a while, but now I've got to ask, what is the full name of this grotesque Midori thing, because everytime I see the name and the word grotesque my head is filled with this image.
And it just plain confuses the crap out of me.
This Midori is awesome! Seriously one of the biggest surprises I encountered. I was hellbent on not watching it because of the promo images and assumptions of non-stop masturbation jokes, when it was recommended to me by a trusted female friend of mine who assured me it was anything but. One of the best recommendations she's ever given me. ^^;

I'd be lying if I said no part of me cared if the events of serious arcs had lasting consequences on the story. When all is said and done, I am fine with the way it is. Like Jexhius says, at it's core, Gintama is a gag series. Sorachi could write in game changing plot lines, unfortunately that would require the enforcement of the fourth wall. You also can't ignore the fact characters do not age.
One thing I like about Gintama is the wealth of characters. Many of them receive quite a bit of development upon introduction, especially the antagonists. That's part of the reason I find the serious arcs work so well.
At the end of the day Sorachi may never explain the mysteries of Gintoki's past. Having a little mystery isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I'll admit, the combination used to destroy the tower was totally epic. And it actually didn't totally feel like an asspull victory for once even if it is a bit disappointing that
Kind of have mixed feelings about the show. On one hand, I can definitely appreciate what it has done for the genre. On the other, it really hasn't aged well and poorly executes certain plot and battle points that are now trademarks of Shounen.
My biggest complaint with the actual content is how the fights played out. After the opening acts, very rarely did a win actually feel like a well-deserved one. Even when sacrifices became the norm, it still felt like an asspull that the enemy would have been able to handle had they either not been fucking around or flat out giving up despite being more than capable of absolutely destroying the Bronze Saints. The Gold Saints arc is particularly notable as only one fight actually delivered on both the tension and satisfaction that comes with an earned victory. Other than that fight, there is only one other that I actually liked which was Seiya vs Shiryu because it used a legitimate strategy, something that all but disappears from the series afterwards.
The constant recycled animation is definitely noticeable as well. I don't really want to fault it for that considering the scale and time it aired, but I can't really call it anything but intrusive. Had I watched this as a kid, I may have been less likely to notice it and more forgiving, but it's a bit hard to do now. While there still is plenty of recycled animation in the genre these days, it can mostly be attributed to long recaps at the beginning of the episode which are much more easily skipped than in the middle of an important fight.
The latter is probably more annoying to me than the former, so I'm thinking if this were to get a full remake with modern art, animation, removed filler, and possibly a slightly altered script, I would love it.
I pretty much have the opposite problem than Fist of the North Star. While that had little variety yet more "weight" and tension to the fights with fewer asspulls, this has more variety but less tension and weight in its fights. I guess as far as 80s shounen go, I can really only recommend Dragon Ball.
I'm still interested enough in the concept to move onto the OVAs and Lost Canvas though, so that's something.

Midori Days (Midori no Hibi) is a really cute show that doesn't go overboard with the obvious jokes. It actually focuses on romance and playful humor, with likeable characters and cuteness by the boatload. Midori is a sweetheart and Seiji was the misunderstood badass before Ryuji from Toradora even existed. It has a great ending too. And the OP/EDs are great.

Although I generally dislike the repetitive format of the Saint Seya battles, I thought the Gold Saints ones were executed well enough.
Like you say there, most of the wins of the protagonists in that arc weren't earned or fair. Well, I think that was the point. Their opponents often just let them pass or were too arrogant to end the fight earlier while they could still win. The viewer gets the sense that the Gold Saints actually are strong, and not just glorified Silver Saints, when the usual "I'll get up and beat you down" routine fails for once. If the Bronze Saints had gotten "fair" wins there, the Gold Saints would have come out of that arc like a bunch of jokes. But, thanks to their handling there, they're still viable characters afterwards. It's why the opponents in the Asgard and Poseidon arcs keep up with the Bronze Saints, they hadn't truly matched the Gold Saints yet.

That's not quite true. While many of the serious arcs are largely self-contained, a couple of them do directly build on earlier events. For instance, the Red Spider arc builds on the earlier Yoshiwara arc, and the 4 Devas arc draws on a number of stories from throughout the series.

Bold choices in this ground breaking show. I'm also not sure what time period this is supposed to be. I don't think its present day because I haven't seen a cell phone yet and I haven't seen anything else that would place it in the present day. Not that it really matters but its just something that's been bugging me as I've been watching the show.
